二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Why was Bastille important to the citizens of Paris? The building of the Bastille had been started in 1370 under Charles V. By the seventeenth century, it had stopped to be important for defense. Cardinal Richelieu turned it into a prison. It was not an ordinary prison to punish common crimes. Its huge doors closed only on enemies of the King. The Bastille's workings were secret. Prisoners were taken to it in closed vehicles. Soldiers on guard duty had to stand with their faces to the wall. No talking was allowed. Worst of all, a prisoner never knew if he would be there a day, a week, a year, or forever. Only the King's letter could set him free.

Over the years, the number of arrests by King's letter had become fewer. By the time of its fall, most of the prisoners were writers who had written against the corruptions(贪污腐败) of the government. Voltaire, the famous French writer, spent a year there in 1717-1718, and another 12 days in 1726.

For those who believed in free speech and free thinking, the Bastille stood for everything evil. The day it was captured, only seven prisoners were found inside. Still, the Bastille was hated by the people. It was a symbol of the King's complete power.

    【1】The Bastille had been a prison ______.

    A. since the time of Charles V

    B.  since 1370

    C. before the seventeenth century

    D. since the time of Cardinal Richelieu

    A. Anyone who did something wrong could find himself suddenly in the Bastille.

    B. The Bastille was only for those who were opposed to the King.

    D. Voltaire was twice put in the Bastille.

【3】At the time of its fall, the Bastille housed ______.

    A. a large number of prisoners

    B. a lot of writers who had been against the government

    C. only a few prisoners

    D. some dozens of people who believed in free speech and free thinking

【4】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. The King could put people in, or let them go out, as he wanted.

    B. Over the years the number of prisoners in the Bastille was getting more and more.

    D. At the time it was captured, there were so few prisoners in it that it meant little to the people.

  • 28、After staying at home for a long time, many of us feel the itch to travel again. Before you start to pack the car, let these five signature drives inspire your plans and wanderlust.

    No. 1: America’s Highway: ROUTE 66

Historic Route 66 is the quintessential American experience. “It’s not the road and it’s not the attractions - it’s the people,” says CEO of Mother Road Enterprises Jim Conkle. “It’s really a collection of cultures and languages. If you travel Route 66 and don’t immerse yourself with the people, you’re missing the key to the whole experience,” he says.

No. 2: Ultimate FLORIDA BEACH Trip

With 1,350 miles of unbroken coastline, Florida is America’s undisputed (不容置疑的) sand-and-surf playground. The top beach in Florida - in fact, in all of America-is Siesta Key, just south of Sarasota. If you have never heard of it, perhaps that’s because Floridians try to keep this most-coveted secret to themselves. Siesta Key is one of many not-too-crowded beaches you’ll find on this drive along Florida Sun Coast.

No. 3: Iowa’s GREAT RIVER ROAD

The Mississippi River is our most inspiring natural landmark. The water is the star of the trip, but the scenery throughout Iowa puts on its own show. A three-hour drive north of Keokuk brings you to Le Claire, birthplace of Buffalo Bill Cody and home to the museum that honors both his contributions as an explorer of the West and the Native Americans he met.

No. 4: Five in One Drive: NATIONAL PARKS

Sculpted by wind and water over thousands of years, the remote canyons and plateaus (高原) of southeastern Utah were among the last parts of the American West to be seen by drivers from the East. Today, that rugged (多岩石的) landscape is home to some of the most popular national parks in the country. Collectively known as the Mighty Five, they offer dramatic desert landscapes, soaring arches, deep slot canyons, and reach-for-the-sky rocky spires.

No. 5: History & Foliage: NEW ENGLAND

New England vacationers essentially want two things: a little bit of history and a lot of leaves. You’ll find them both on Massachusetts’s Mohawk Trail, one of the nation’s first designated scenic highways. The Mohawk people once used this byway across the Berkshire Hills as a trading route, and armies from Colonial Boston traveled it to defend the western frontier.

【1】Which drive best suits people who enjoy water sports?

    A.America’s Highway: ROUTE 66.

    B.Ultimate FLORIDA BEACH Trip.

C.Five in One Drive: NATIONAL PARKS.

    D.History & Foliage: NEW ENGLAND.

【2】What does “Mighty Five” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A.The homes in the American West.

B.The sculptures in the American West.

    C.The highways in southeastern Utah.

D.The national parks in southeastern Utah.

【3】What can we infer from the text?

A.Involving yourself with the people will capture the essence of traveling Route 66.

B.If you’ve never heard of Siesta Key, that’s because Floridians keep it a secret.

C.A three-hour drive south of Keokuk leads you to the birthplace of Buffalo Bill Cody.

D.Armies from Colonial Boston traveled across the Berkshire Hills to protect the western frontier.

  • 29、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项

A recent report published online explains an uncommon phenomenon why people from East Asia tend to have more trouble than those from Europe in identifying facial expressions.

Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly (均匀地) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.

“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth.”

According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.

The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.

It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”

In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.

    【1】The discovery shows that Westerners_________.

    A. consider facial expressions universally reliable

    B. pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth

    C. observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways

    D. have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions

【2】 What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 6 refer to?

    A. The participants in the study.

    B. The researchers of the study.

    C. The errors made during the study.

    D. The data collected from the study.

【3】 In comparison with Westerners, Easterners are likely to_________.

    A. do translation more successfully

    B. study the mouth more frequently

    C. examine the eyes more attentively

    D. read facial expressions more correctly

【4】 What can be the best title for the passage?

    A. The Eye as the Window to the Soul.

    B. How to Increase Cross-cultural Understanding.

    C. Effective Methods to Develop Social Skills.

    D. Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions.

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When parents take part in our school events, it is usually embarrassing. A few weeks ago, it was my mom who played the embarrassing parent role.

While my mom and I were shopping, we ran into my teacher, who mentioned that the school didn’t have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for Winter Fair. And, right then and there, my mom said, “I know the perfect song-and-dance. I’ll teach it to the kids!”

Before I could say “Please don’t,” my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week. Oh, and just to be clear, she is not a professional entertainer at all; my parents run a small grocery store.

“Um,” I said on our way home, “are you sure this is such a good idea?”

“Of course!” she said. “We’ll have fun!”

“OK, guys,” my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday. “We’re going to stop silent reading a little early because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair. Let’s welcome Arizona’s mother.” I looked up and discovered my mom standing at the front of the room wearing the world’s funniest big hat.

“I’m super excited to be here with you!” my mom said. “I’m going to teach you a fun little song-and-dance I learned a few years back, when I did some theater in college. Here it goes!”

Oh, please, oh, please, I said over and over in my head, let there be a fire drill, or an urgent meeting, or a power cut, or anything to stop my mom from completely embarrassing herself—and me!

But apparently, my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on some background music and started singing and dancing away.

I closed my eyes, covered my ears, and sank as low as I possibly could in my chair.

    注意:1.续写词数为80词左右;

    2.段落开头句已给出。

After a while, though, I screwed up enough courage to uncover one ear and look through a half-open eye, ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
