  • 26、Canada is considered one of the most fascinating countries in the world and attracts numerous tourists from all over the world every year. 【1】 Here are some tips on how to make your trip budget-friendly.

First, adopt economical ways to get around. Driving is one of the cheapest and most efficient ways to get around Canada. If you live close to Canada, you can drive your own car through customs and border control, or you can rent a car.【2】 Though it tends to be slower, tickets are extremely cheap, especially when booked in advance. What’s more, you can travel by train across Canada and along the coasts, which is one of the most cost-friendly ways to see the country.

【3】 These are very popular and inexpensive ways to stay the night. Look for shared rooms rather than entire homes, because sharing the spaces tends to be cheaper. Alternatively, you can stay at hostels. Most hostels have shared bathrooms and kitchen areas, and might have shared bedrooms as well.

To have fun, go to music, art, and food festivals. Especially during the summer, most large cities have a variety of outdoor festivals with free entrance. 【4】 You can also visit museums, art galleries, and universities. Art and history are extremely important cultural aspects of life in Canada, so there are many free or low-cost museums and galleries to visit. Additionally, most universities offer free tours of their campuses. 【5】

Keep these tips in mind, and even if you’re on a tight budget, you can spend time in major cities in Canada, enjoy the outdoors, and experience the unique culture of the country.

A.Some of them include small museums or historical landmarks.

B.As for accommodation, use home sharing services like Airbnb.

C.Domestic tourism industry has also boomed in Canada in recent years.

D.Besides, visit local websites to find the best hotels topping tourists’ list.

E.If you are longing for a trip to Canada but on a tight budget, don’t worry.

F.Take advantage of the opportunity to see local artists and sample Canadian cuisine!

G.If you don’t have a tight schedule, taking the Megabus from city to city is a good choice.

  • 28、“In a close cooperation between several first-class chemists, physicists, and biologists, we have developed a very efficient water filter (净水器). It does not need any energy source but sunlight,” said Forró. “Thus our device can supply clean drinking water even at remote places.” The small, adaptable flat-bodied device was designed at Switzerland’s EPFL research institute, by a team led by Prof. Laszl6 Forró.

Water enters via a tube (管子) in the top, flows through a multilayer composite (复合的) material sandwiched between two sheets of glass, and exits through a tube in the bottom. The composite material is made up of titanium dioxide nanowires (TDN,二氧化钛纳米线) interwoven with carbon nanotubes. When the filter is exposed to sunlight, the UV light (紫外线) causes the composite to produce a group of molecules (分子) known as reactive oxygen species. These molecules are highly effective at killing harmful bacteria and viruses. Its potential challenge when working outdoors is rainy or cloudy days.

The filter has already been successfully tested on water containing E. coli bacteria, with results indicating that it should also have no problem ridding of other harmful bacteria. In fact, it is believed that the technology may also prove effective at ridding of micro-pollutants such as pesticides (杀虫剂) and drug remains. It should be noted that when activated by UV light, titanium dioxide nanowires on their own are capable of killing harmful viruses and bacteria. For that matter, even UV light alone can purify water, if the water is left sitting in the sunlight in a transparent container.

However, Prof. Forró told us that his team’s filter is much more effective — this is due in part to the carbon nanotubes’ ability to absorb heat from the sunlight, making the purification process faster. The present small-scale model can treat 2 liters (0.5 gal) of water per day, although that figure would rise considerably if the technology were to be scaled up.

【1】Why can the new filter work at remote areas?

    A.It is small and flat-shaped.

B.It can be powered by sunlight.

    C.It’s designed by famous scientists.

D.It can be efficient in cleaning water.

【2】Which aspects of filter does paragraph 2 mainly focus on?

    A.Appearance and possible effects.

    B.Working conditions.

    C.Structure and working process.

    D.Strengths and weaknesses.

【3】What can we learn from paragraph 3?

A.The filter can kill all kinds of bacteria of the water.

B.The filter is able to get rid of a lot of drugs in the water.

C.TDN can kill viruses without being activated by UV light.

D.UV light is able to purify the water in transparent containers.

【4】What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage?

A.To state a new function of UV light.

    B.To introduce a solar-driven water filter.

C.To inform the discovery of a new material.

D.To stress the effectiveness of a water filter.

  • 29、The world is filled with smarteducated and gifted people. We meet them every day. A few days agomy car was not running well. I pulled it into a garage and the young mechanic fixed it in just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine sound. I was amazed. The sad truth is that great talent is not enough.

I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn. I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $100000 a year. A business consultant who specializes in the medical trade told me how many doctors and dentists struggle financially. It was this business consultant(顾问)who gave me the phrase“They are one skill away from great wealth.”

There is an old saying that goes“JOB means ‘Just Over Broke(破产)”. And unfortunatelyI would say that the saying applies to millions of people. Because schools do not think financial intelligence is intelligencemost workers “____________They work and they pay the bills. Instead I recommend that young people seek work for what they will learnmore than what they will earn.

When I ask the classes I teach“How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald's” almost all the students raise their hands. I then ask“So if most of you can cook a better hamburgerhow come McDonald's makes more money than you” The answer is obvious: McDonald's is excellent at business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.

1The author mentions the mechanic in the first paragraph to show that .

    A. he is just one of the talented people

    B. he is ready to help others

    C. he has a sharp sense of hearing

    D. he knows little about car repairing

2The underlined part in the third paragraph can be best replaced by“ ”.

    A. spend more than they can afford

    B. do in their own way

    C. live in their own circle

    D. live within what they earn

3Why do talented people earn so little according to the author?

    A. They don't work hard enough.

    B. They lack financial intelligence.

    C. They don't make full use of their talents.

    D. They have no specialized skills.

4The main purpose of the author is to tell us .

    A. how young people can find a satisfactory job

    B. what schools should teach about finance

    C. why so many talented people are poor

    D. how McDonald's makes much money
