  • 26、I would recommend uVolunteer Programs in Costa Rica(哥斯达黎加) to anyone. Everyone can learn something and enjoy their time here if they have the ability to adapt to different circumstances and a sense of adventure.

I came to San Ramon---the capital of Costa Rica, hardly knowing any Spanish, so the first thing I did there was to take Spanish courses at Spanish Language School for a week. My family stay was also of great help to my language study, but that experience with the classes gave me a huge jumpstart on the language, which has been extremely valuable.

Once in San Ramon, I was fortunate enough to experience several projects with amazing people. I taught Adult English Night Classes, helped at an elementary school, and also went to the Community Center in Bajo. The adult classes are just so awesome because it can be really engaging, social, and fun while being educational. We all learned a lot from each other and became pretty close. The Sabana School was a nice elementary school right by the dorm. The kids were so incredibly nice, even giving me lots of hugs and small gifts. I came at a time when there were many holiday celebrations so there were some scheduling challenges, resulting in me being there to assist English classes a couple of hours in the morning. I decided to go to Bajo in the afternoons. I, like all of the other volunteers, absolutely loved it. This is a place where I felt I was really helping in a more significant way. The kids started to open up more to me the more I was there playing with the kids and helping with the educational programs. The staff and kids are just incredible.

Aside from work, we decided on some weekend trips. By the end of my stay I had experienced hot volcanic springs in La Fortuna, snorkeling and hiking with incredible wildlife in Puerto Viejo, caving in Nicaragua, and kayaking and night fishing (we ate the fish too) in Playa Hermosa. I also enjoyed dancing, eating, and watching performances during the San Ramon festivals.

【1】Everyone can benefit from uVolunteer Programs in Costa Rica as long as ______.

    A. they learn to speak Spanish

    B. they are flexible and adventurous

    C. they live in a local family

    D. they experience different projects

  • 28、   It’s nothing unusual for people to multitask nowadays. But the ability to do a number of things at the same time could be different between the two sexes.

A team of UK researchers recently compared the performances of 120 women and 120 men in a computer test about switching(转换) between tasks of counting and shape recognition.

Men equalled women when tasks were done one at a time. But when the tasks were mixed up, there was a clear difference. According to the paper published in the journal BMC Psychology, both women and men slowed down and made more mistakes as the switching became more rapid. But men were slower, taking 77 percent longer to answer, while women took 69 percent longer.

To make the experiment more connected to day-to-day life, researchers tried a second test. A group of women and men were given eight minutes to complete a series of everyday tasks, such as finding restaurants on a map, doing simple math problems, answering a phone call, or deciding how they would search for a lost key in a field.

Once again, women performed better than men in the test, especially in the key-searching task.

Where do women get the ability to keep organized under pressure better than men? Researchers believe that it has its origins in evolution(进化). In ancient times, women had to keep an eye on children while cooking meals. Meanwhile, men only needed to focus on hunting.

However, as with all studies, the results don’t necessarily apply to every single person in the world. “We don’t mean that men can’t multitask, or that only women can,” researcher Keith Laws of the University of Hertfordshire, UK, told BBC News. “We are saying that the average woman is better able to organize her time and switch between tasks than the average man.”

1In the tests, researchers found that ________.

A.women were better at switching between tasks than men

B.women made more mistakes than men when multitasking

C.men were better at counting and shape recognition than women

D.men completed a series of daily tasks more quickly than women

2What is the main purpose of paragraph 6?

A.To give advice on how to improve the ability to multitask.

B.To show how men and women think and respond otherwise.

C.To compare the roles of men and women in human communities.

D.To explain why men and women perform differently in multitasking.

3Which of the following would Keith Laws most probably agree with?

A.All women are born to be good at multitasking.

B.Some men are as good at multitasking as women.

C.Men shouldn’t do jobs that call for multitasking skills.

D.Every woman is better able to multitask than every man.

  • 29、When British musician Paul Barton performs in central Thailand lately, his energetic listeners react wildly. Some pull his hair or jump on his piano. Others steal his music.

The behavior is normal, however, because these crowds are truly wild— wild monkeys to be exact. Barton plays often to the animals in Lopburi, an area known for its populations of wild macaque monkeys. The pianist hopes the music shows bring calm to the animals during the coronavirus crisis.

The disease has caused problems for the monkeys, too. They are hungry. The restrictions on tourism mean fewer people come to see the monkeys and feed them.

“We need to make an effort to make sure that they eat properly. And when they eat properly they will be calmer and will not be aggressive,” said Barton, 59, a long-time Thailand resident.

Barton has played at four sites in Lopburi, including at an ancient Hindu temple, a store and an old movie theater.

The macaques quickly surround Barton when he plays Greensleeves, Beethoven’s Für Elise and Michael Nyman’s Diary of Love. Some of the creatures sit on his chair, while others climb up his body and touch his head.

“A wonderful opportunity to see the wild animals just being themselves,” said Barton, from Yorkshire in northern England.

But, Barton keeps his attention on his performance, even as a small monkey runs over his hands on the instrument. Other monkeys take control of his music papers.

“I was surprised to play the piano and find that they were actually eating the music as I was playing it.” But, he added, “I wasn’t going to let those things distract from the project which is to play the music for these wonderful macaques.”

The monkeys are Barton’s latest animal fans. Past wildlife audiences included elephants living in special protected areas.

Barton hopes to raise awareness of the monkeys’ hunger. At the same time, he hopes to study their behavior as they react to classical music.

【1】Why does Paul Barton play to the wild macaque monkeys in Thailand?

    A.To cure their disease.

    B.To make friends with them.

C.To attract more tourists to watch them.

D.To draw people’s attention to their hunger.

【2】Which is the macaque monkeys’ reaction to Paul Barton’s performance?

A.Listening carefully to his perfect performance.

B.Becoming more aggressive when he plays classical music.

C.Trying to stop him by taking away his music paper.

    D.Surrounding him and reacting wildly.

【3】What can we infer from the passage?

A.Wild animals are difficult to deal with.

B.Macaque monkeys are also infected with coronavirus.

C.Barton keeps on playing however the monkeys react.

D.Elephants living in special protected areas will be Barton’s next listeners.

【4】What’s the best title for the passage?

A.Musician plays for Monkeys in Thailand

    B.The Power of Music

C.Classical Music Prevents Monkeys from Hunger

    D.The Recovery of Wild Monkeys
