二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、A clever technologist took steamboat inventions and turned them into the first commercial steamboat service.

Although Robert Fulton did not invent the steamboat, as is commonly believed, he played an important role in making steamboat travel a reality. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1765. As a young man, he set out to make his name as a portrait painter. His career took him to Europe and into the orbit of people with the power to support him politically and financially.

Fulton entered London society after he painted Benjamin Franklin’s portrait. While abroad, Fulton left the arts for a career in shipbuilding. He was interested in the recently-invented steam engine, and thought it could be used to power ships. Fulton’s vision was not original; many others had entered the field, and the unfortunate inventor John Fitch had built a working steamship already. But like Henry Ford, Fulton’s talent lay not in the invention but in the product’s application in the marketplace.

Fulton didn’t focus entirely on the steamboat. In 1804, he tested the first submarine successfully, which he had built for the British Royal Navy. His invention would make him a celebrity upon his return to the United States two years later. Fulton’s partner Robert Livingston obtained an exclusive license for steamboat services on New York’s Hudson River. It was time for Fulton to deliver.

To build an efficient, reliable steamboat, Fulton used a special English steam engine. The ship’s bottom was flat and its stern was square. The steamboat Clermont made its debut(首次亮相)on August 17, 1807, steaming up the river from New York to Albany, and it soon entered commercial services. The hilly terrain of New York made water transport faster than land transport, and Fulton’s boat—formerly known as the “North River Steamboat”—was a hit. Within five years, Fulton would be running services on six major rivers plus the Chesapeake Bay, and bring in great profits.

【1】What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?

A.Henry Ford was as unfortunate as John Fitch.

B.Henry Ford was talented in product application.

C.Fulton left the arts as he couldn’t support himself.

D.Fulton was the first to create a working steamship.

【2】When did Fulton become a celebrity in the United States?

    A.In 1804.

    B.In 1806.

    C.In 1807.

    D.In 1802.

    【3】What is mentioned about Clermont?

    A.It operated for five years.

    B.It earned Fulton much money.

C.It had an American steam engine.

D.It was not accepted by people at first.

【4】What’s the best title of the text?

    A.Robert Fulton and His Steamboat

    B.Robert Fulton: A Great Inventor

    C.Steamboats Changing Water Transport

    D.The History of Commercial Steamboats

  • 27、Megan

I’m base in Bahrain, and I have a small apartment there. The thing I like most about my job is the chance to meet people from different cultures. I spend a lot of my time handing out food and drinks and clearing up people’s rubbish. I certainly don’t feel very excited about going home at two in the morning.

    Frank

I enjoy playing around with word puzzles. So I sent a couple in to a local newspaper and I suppose it is a strange way to spend your day surrounded by dictionaries and books, but it’s great because I’m just doing what I like.

    Raoul

Most people think I spend my day chopping () vegetables and washing dishes, but it’s not that simple. I have to be really careful with the food and keep everything very clean. The biggest problem is my boss – he shouts at me all the time – even, for example, if I forget to wash up one plate. Actually, I’m hoping to find a new job soon because I don’t get much time off.

  • 28、   While drunken driving may be on the decline, traffic safety experts remain puzzled over how to deal with another alcohol related danger:drunken pedestrians(行人).

Pedestrians struck and killed by cars often are extremely drunk. In fact, they are drunken more frequently and with higher blood alcohol levels than drunken drivers who are killed in accidents. Various studies have shown forty percent of adult pedestrians involved in deadly crashes have a blood alcohol level of at least 0.10 which by law in most states signifies intoxication (醉酒) compared to only 25 percent of drivers in deadly accidents according to recent federal data.

Some types of pedestrian accidents have been declining nationally especially those involving children, but the number of adult pedestrians who are drunk when killed in traffic has remained relatively steady at 2500 a year. The total number of pedestrians killed annually in US traffic accidents is at least 7 000 or one of every seven highway accidents resulting in death.

"We're dealing here, we think, with a very severe drinking problem that leads to a severe highway safety problem", said Richard Blomberg, president of Dunlap and Associates Inc. , in Norwalk Coon.

Blomberg, whose consulting company found a very high rate of alcohol involvement in a controlled study of pedestrian accidents in New Orleans, was among several researchers who spoke on the topic at the annual meeting of the Research Council's Transportation Research Board (TRE) in Washington in January.

Pedestrian accidents have not received enough attention in the past according to Kay Colpitts who chairs the board's committee on pedestrians. Few methods exist to monitor walking habits she said and researchers have been puzzled about how to prevent disasters.

【1】Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

    A.Traffic Safety.

    B.Drunken Drivers.

    C.Drunken Pedestrian Accidents.

    D.A Severe Highway Safety Problem.

【2】According to recent federal data, drunken drivers with an over 0. 10 blood alcohol level in deadly accidents ________.

    A.are relatively steady at 2 500 a year

B.are 15 percent less than drunken adult walkers

C.are at least 7 000 in US traffic accidents

D.make up one seventh of highway accidents

【3】Among the causes of walkers' accidents, the most serious problem is ________.

A.long delays in traffic signals causing pedestrians to lose patience

B.former drunken drivers whose licenses are not allowed to use for a time

C.a lack of adult keeping eyes on many children involved in accidents

D.taking too much alcohol and then hanging along the roads

【4】From the passage we know that Blomberg is ________.

    A.a researcher

    B.a specialist in traffic safety

C.a clerk of a consulting company

    D.a government official

  • 29、At a supermarket, two women arc shopping. One is a stay-at-home housewife who loves to create delicious masterpieces. The other is a supervisor at an advertising agency. The two ladies stop in the frozen foods section."I'm so tired,"sighs the professional woman."I don't know what to do about supper."Her friend suggests,"What about a microwave dinner?"The weary professional sighs,"I don't feel like cooking tonight."

It is true that Americans have cakes for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and instant dinners. Most Americans enjoy the convenience of prepackaged meals that can be served in 10 minutes or less. However,if you think American cooking means throwing the packaged contents into the microwave, think again. Many Americans recognize the value of cooking skills, admitting that there's nothing better than a good home-cooked meal.

For those who need guidance in their cooking, recipes are lifesavers.Recipes list all the ingredients for a dish, the amount of each to use,and a description of how to put them together. Most good cooks have a shelf full of cookbooks ranging from locally published recipe collections to national bestsellers.Magazines devoted to home management, are full of tasty selections.Friends often increase their recipe collection by passing around their favorites cards.

For experienced cooks, recipes are merely references. They often make adjustments, depending on the people they need to serve, the available ingredients and their personal taste. Some cooks prefer instead to depend on their feelings to cook the right flavors.

Of course,as a "land of immigrants,"America has imported all varieties of cooking. Most good cooks in America are "fluent" in several cooking "dialects": Mexican,Italian,Chinese and traditional American style, just to name a few. But whatever the dialect, cooking is a language everyone understands.

    D. to compare two women's hobbies

We have all heard the expression: “Remember to stop and smell the roses.” But, how often do we really take time out of our busy fast-paced lives to notice the world around us? I have reflected back on one situation many times since it happened and have learned several powerful lessons from it.

I’m as guilty as anyone of ignoring the world around in this manner, especially when I am driving on California’s overcrowded streets. A short time ago, however, I witnessed an event that showed me how being wrapped up in my own little world has kept me from being fully aware of the bigger world picture around me.

I was driving to a business appointment and, as usual, I was planning in my mind what I was going to say. I came to a very busy crossroads where the stoplight had just turned red. “All right,” I thought to myself, “I can beat the next light if I race ahead of the pack. ”My mind and car were in auto pilot, ready to go when suddenly my absent-minded state was broken by an unforgettable sight.

A young couple, both blind, was walking arm-in-arm across this busy crossroads with cars whizzing by in every direction. The woman was holding something tightly in her hands that sling to her chest, obviously carrying a child. Both of them had a white walking stick extended, searching for clues to direct them across the crossroads.

Initially I was moved. They were overcoming what I felt was one of the most feared handicaps — blindness. “Wouldn’t it be terrible to be blind?” I thought. Without realizing the danger they were in, they were walking right the path of oncoming cars. I was frightened for them because I didn’t know if the other drivers understood what was happening.

However, as I watched from the front line of traffic, I saw a miracle unfold before my eyes.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为 150 左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Every car in every direction did the same thing.
