26、Many of us have experienced the following: the day before an exam, we try to squeeze a huge amount of information into our brain. But just as quickly as we acquire it, the knowledge we have gained is gone again. The good news is that we can solve this problem. With expanded time intervals between a person’s learning events, we keep the knowledge for a longer time.
But what happens in the brain during the spacing effect? It is generally thought that during learning, neurons (神经元) are activated and form new connections. In this way, the learned knowledge is stored and can be regained by reactivating the same set of neurons. However, we still know very little about how pauses positively influence this process.
Neurobiologists Annet and Pieter did an experiment, during which mice had to remember the position of a hidden chocolate piece in a maze (迷宫). On three continuous chances, they were allowed to explore the maze and find their reward—including pauses of different lengths. “Mice trained with the longer intervals between learning phases (阶段) were unable to remember the position of the chocolate as quickly,” explains Annet. “But the next day, the longer the pauses, the better was the mice’s memory.”
“If three learning phases follow each other very quickly, we naturally expect the same neurons to be activated,” Pieter says. “After all, it is the same experiment with the same information. But after a long break, we imagine the brain interprets the following learning phase as a new event and processes it with different neurons.”
However, the researchers found the opposite. In fast continuous learning phases, the mice activated mostly different neurons. When taking longer breaks, the same neurons active earlier were used again later. Reactivating the same neurons could allow the brain to strengthen the connections between these cells. With spaced learning, we may reach our goal more slowly, but we benefit from our knowledge for much longer.

27、
It was raining hard and nearly dusk. I was late for an appointment in the nearby city that I knew only by GPS. Now my phone had died. The usual interstate exits were closed. I couldn’t figure out how to get where I was going or how to let my appointment know I was likely not going to make it there.
I stopped at a McDonald’s in a poor part of the town and walked up to what appeared to be a mother and her teen daughter. I’m sorry, but do you mind, is it possible for me to look up a number on your phone and then call my friends and let them know I am lost?” She handed me her phone and they told me I was lucky that she had her phone. It was getting ready to be turned off because she didn't have enough money to pay the phone bill.
The young girl and mother seemed to be clinging to each other and talked together as I made my phone call, not really paying me much attention as the people at the other end of the phone told me to come on, I was not too late, and then told me how to get there As I stood to leave, suddenly, I reached into my wallet where I don't usually have cash and pulled out all. I had a $20 bill. I pressed it into the mother’s hand and then turned to leave quickly because 1 didn’t want to take the credit for it. But not before seeing that she was crying, her daughter called after me,” Thanks, sir. You have no idea how you just helped us.” And yet, they really helped me.

28、We have all heard of superfoods whether it is from articles or in the news. But what are they? 【1】 Superfoods are things you eat that do more than satisfy your hunger because they help your body work better. Think of your body as a car. The better the gas you put in your car, the better it will run. 【2】
As the saying goes, "You are what you eat." This is very true because if you are eating foods that are full of fat, your body will most likely show it. On the other hand, if you are eating energy-filled foods, your body will show that as well.
【3】 They are filled with fiber (纤维), proteins, and important nutrients that are easily used by the body. To become a superfood officially, a food has to meet three requirements. First, it must be available (可获得的) to everyone. Second, it must contain nutrients that help you live longer. 【4】
Eating superfoods can change your life in many ways. Not surprisingly, people who start eating them lose weight quickly. One reason for this is that many superfoods are naturally low in calories (卡路里). 【5】 With most diets, people concentrate on what shouldn't be eaten. With superfoods, they focus on all the great things they can eat. There are other benefits to adding them to your diet as well. Eating superfoods over time helps keep you looking young, fights heart disease and cures some cancers.
A.Some of the top superfoods are berries, nuts, and whole grains.
B.Our bodies are just the same.
C.Another reason is that sticking to eating them is very easy.
D.This is a good question with a simple answer.
E.Getting a wide variety of foods, superfood included, is the better solution.
F.Lastly, its health benefits must be proven by scientific studies.
G.If you want to start adding superfoods to your diet, do it at your own pace.

31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
NASA is on a journey to Mars, with a goal of sending humans to the Red Planet in the 2030s. That journey is already well under way.
For decades, the agency and its partners have sent orbiters, landers and rovers(探测器), 【1】 increasing our knowledge about the Red Planet and paving the way for future human explorers. The Curiosity rover has gathered radiation data to help us protect future astronauts, and the upcoming Mars 2020 rover will study the 【2】 of Martian resources, including oxygen.
Building on the robotic legacy(遗产), the human exploration of Mars crosses three thresholds(门槛), each with 【3】 challenges as humans move farther from Earth: Earth Reliant, the Proving Ground, and Earth Independent.
Earth Reliant explorations is 【4】 on research aboard the International Space Station. The orbiting microgravity laboratory serves as a world - class test bed for the technologies and communications systems needed for human missions to deep space. Astronauts are learning about what it takes to live and work in space for long periods of time, improving our understanding of how the body changes in space and how to protect astronauts' health.
Next, we move into the Proving Ground, 【5】 a series of missions near the moon called “cislunar space” to test the capabilities we will need to live and work at Mars. Astronauts on the space station are only hours away from Earth, but the proving ground is days away, a(n) 【6】 stepping stone to a Mars mission, which will be months away from home.
Also in the 2020s, we’ll send astronauts on a year-long mission into this deep space proving ground, confirming habitation and testing our 【7】 for Mars.
Finally, we become Earth Independent, building on the knowledge 【8】 on the space station and in deep space to send humans to low-Mars orbit in the early 2030s.
This phase will also test the entry, descent(降落)and landing techniques needed to get to the Martin surface and study what's needed for in-situ resource utilization or "living off the land". NASA is already studying the 【9】 "Exploration Zones" on Mars that would offer compelling science research and provide resources our astronauts can use.
There are challenges to 【10】 Mars, but we know they are solvable. We are well on our way to getting there, landing there, and living there.
