Everyone in the fourth grade works at the fair. Some sell ice cream, drinks and snacks, others take care of the little children who ride the horses. I got the second job and I've never forgotten it, because that's where I met Tiger.
My job was to help little children get on the back of a little horse. I kept telling the children to wait their turn and holding ice cream for them while they rode about. It’s clear that I was growing older and should be more responsible.
Suddenly, a boy came to the horse. He took the little horse's reins (缰绳)! The horse stopped, and the girl on its back started to fall. I was trying to reach the girl when I saw Tiger go by my legs. It held the horse's reins and pulled the horse away from my legs. I caught the girl just before we both hit the ground. The girl sat on top of me. She was laughing at the ice cream on my face. The horse's reins were in Tiger's mouth!
Thanks to Tiger's fast action, I saved the little girl. We were both heroes. And Tiger, the fastest dog I've ever known became my new best friend.

25、 Most teens need about 8 to more than 9 hours of sleep each night. The right amount of sleep is necessary for anyone who wants to do well in a test or play sports without tripping over their feet. Unfortunately, though, many teens don’t get enough sleep.
_______________? Early starting time in some schools may play a role in this sleep deficit (不足).Teens who fall asleep after midnight may still have to get up early for school, meaning that they may only shorten into 6 or 7 hours of sleep a night.A couple of hours of missed sleep a night may not seem like a big deal, but can create a noticeable sleep deficit over time.
Why is sleep important? Sleep deficit affects everything from a person’s ability to pay attention in class to his or her mood.Research shows that more than 20% of high school students fall asleep in class, and experts have been able to tie lost sleep to poorer grades.Lack of sleep also damages teens’ ability to do their best in sports.Slowed responses and less concentration(专注)caused by sleep deficit don’t just affect school or sports performance, though.Lack of sleep slows reaction time, which can be life threatening for people who drive. The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration reports that 1,500 people are killed every year in crashes caused by drivers between the ages of 15 and 24 who are simply tired.Lack of sleep has also been linked to emotional troubles, such as feelings of sadness and depression.Sleep helps keep us physically healthy, too,by slowing our body’s systems enough to re-energize us after everyday activities.
How do I know if I’m getting enough sleep? Even if you think you’re getting enough sleep, you may not be.Here are some of the signs that you may need more sleep: (1) difficulty in waking up in the morning;(2) inability to focus;(3) falling asleep during classes; (4) feelings of anxiety and even depression(忧郁).Recently, some researchers, parents, and teachers have suggested that middle and high school classes begin later in the morning to meet teens’ need for more sleep. Some schools have already tried later starting time. You and your friends, parents, and teachers can call up for later start time at your school, but in the meantime you’ll have to make changes on your own first.

After a while, a woman came along, putting a pot of water on her head. Suddenly, the woman tripped over (绊倒) the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and walked away in tears.
The king watched all day as many people complained about the stone, but nobody tried to move it. The king wondered, “Is there no one in this village who feels any responsibility to keep their neighbors from harm?”
Just then, a young girl came along. When she saw the stone, she said to herself. “This stone is a danger. 27、 A feral child is a child who, from a young age, has lived with animals in the wild. What makes wild animals adopt these children and raise them as their own is a mystery. Since feral children have often had no contact with humans for a long time, they may be more like wild animals than people. Their stories, although often upsetting can teach us how people learn and use language — and perhaps even what it means to be human.
In Uganda in 1991, a tribeswoman saw a naked boy living with a troop of wild monkeys in the jungle. The woman was shocked and quickly told the people in her village about the boy. When they tried to take him away from the monkeys, the frightened boy threw sticks at them and climbed up a tree to hide. The monkeys fought fiercely, trying to stop the tribesmen from taking him away, but they did not succeed.
After his "rescue", the boy was taken to Kamuzinda Chritan Orphanage, outside Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. He was identified as John Ssabunnya, a boy who had disappeared three years earlier after his mother was murdered and his father went missing. John was only two years old when he disappeared.
John couldn't speak when he arrived at the orphanage. It was obvious that he did not know how to act in a human way-- he knew only how to behave like a monkey. However, he soon began to talk and was found to have a beautiful singing voice.
John shot to fame at the age of fourteen, when he toured the UK with a children's choir(合唱队). "His is a remarkable story. One day it could even be made into a film.” said tour organizer Hillary Cook.
