二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、“You should get a cat,” my doctor said. “A cat?” I couldn’t even look after myself. I took a deep breath and carefully considered the idea of welcoming a feline (猫科的) friend into my life.

Adopting an animal during the height of the pandemic was far from easy. When my partner and I found Cinnamon, her adoption profile made her out as the perfect kitten. We filled out the paperwork and had a few weeks to prepare for her arrival.

When she came home, it became increasingly obvious that Cinnamon didn’t understand “no”, “stop it” or “don’t do that”. She was the worst cat I’ve ever owned. I was beginning to doubt my doctor’s advice.

We decided to start taking her for walks. I could barely leave the house before, but my heart couldn’t say no to Cinnamon. Cinnamon showed me what bravery looked like if there was a dog at a park, she would run toward it. She jumped without knowing where she would land. She loved adventure. I found myself mirroring her behavior after a while, jumping out of bed without a second thought. I began to find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning.

Cinnamon unfortunately passed away after a medical accident, leaving a cat-sized hole in my heart the day she left us at only six months old. I’m no stranger to sadness or grief, but losing my pet so suddenly was the most confusing emotional experience I’ve ever had. She was supposed to help me through more of my life than the three short months we had her.

Our time is often cut unpredictably, unmistakably short. It would be a shame to live life being anything less than brave and adventurous.

【1】Why did the doctor advise the author to get a cat?

A.To teach her to interact with animals.

B.To assist her to fill up her spare time.

C.To help her out of her mental disease.

D.To ensure her safety in time of pandemic.

【2】Which of the following best describes the cat Cinnamon?

    A.Stupid but lovely.

    B.Outgoing and aggressive.

    C.Stubborn but courageous.

    D.Naughty and adventurous.

【3】What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

    A.Why Cinnamon loved going outside.

B.How Cinnamon affected the author positively.

C.Why the author decided to take Cinnamon outside.

D.How Cinnamon interacted with the author outdoors.

【4】What message does the story convey?

A.The loss of a pet is painful.

    B.The short life is unpredictable.

    C.Friendship with pets is helpful.

D.The courage to take risks is beneficial.

  • 22、   Archaeologists used DNA taken from a broken clay pipe stem found in Maryland to build a picture of an enslaved woman who died around 200 years ago and had origins in modern-day Sierra Leone. One researcher called the work “a mind-blower.

“In this particular context, and from that time period, I think it’s a first,” team member Hannes Schroeder told The Washington Post. “To be able to get DNA from an object like a pipe stem is quite exciting. Also it is exciting for descendant(后裔) communities. Through this technology, they’re able to make a connection not only to the site but potentially back to Africa.”

The pipe stem was found at the Belvoir plantation in Crownsville, Maryland, where enslaved people lived until 1864 and where a likely slave cemetery was recently found. DNA taken from the pipe linked back to a woman either directly from or descended from the Mende people, who lived in west Africa, in an area now part of Sierra Leone.

Julie Schablitsky, the chief archaeologist with the Maryland state highway administration, told The Post the discovery, based on saliva(唾液) absorbed into the clay pipe, was a “mind-blower”. She also said records show the existence of a slave trade route Sierra Leone to Annapolis, plied(定期往来) by British and American ships. “As soon as people stepped on those slave ships in Africa,” she said, “whether they were from Benin or whether they were from Sierra Leone, wherever they were from, that identity was lost. Their humanity is robbed. Who they are as a people has gone.”

The new analysis is part of ongoing research around Belvoir that has given descendants of the people enslaved there new insight into the lives of their ancestors. Speaking to The Post, Nancy Daniels, a genealogist from Laurel, Maryland, who thinks she is a descendant of enslaved families from Belvoir but was not linked to the research on the pipe, called the discovery “overwhelming.” “I’m sitting here about ready to cry,” she said. “I’m sorry. I'm so happy ... Thank God for the DNA.”

This year, events and ceremonies are being held to mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved people in America, at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619.

1What does the phrase “a mind-blower” in paragraphs 1 and 4 refer to?

    A.A surprise. B.A confusion.

    C.An excitement. D.A fascination.

2According to Hannes Schroeder, the pipe stem was of great significance because________.

A.it was the first direct evidence that slaves living in Maryland were originally from Africa

B.it helped the archaeologists to draw a portrait of the enslaved woman

C.it might contribute to identifying the birthplace of the descendant communities

D.it contained genetic clues to the ancestral background of its owner

3What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The owner of the pipe once lived in what is now an area in west Africa.

B.The history of slavery in America is an ongoing topic of concern.

C.African slaves lost their identities when they arrived at the Belvoir plantation.

D.Nancy Daniels, a genealogist was sorry for not being involved in the research.

4Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.DNA from an old pipe throws lights on the origins of the enslaved

B.A new research reveals the origins of enslaved African woman

C.The descendants of enslaved people seek their identities

D.DNA contributes to the breakthrough of a new research

  • 23、You're happy to let your best friend borrow your mountain bike, but would you be willing to loan it out to a total stranger if you could make some money from the arrangement?

That's the idea behind peer-to-peer (P2P) renting, a new model concluded by sites such as eBay and Craigslist. Instead of selling an idle (闲置) thing, you loan it to people in your town, get paid a small rental fee and gel it back when the borrower's done with it. In the past few years, almost a dozen websites have popped up promising to connect lenders and borrowers. For example, you can use GetAround to rent out your car or motorcycle, SnapGoods to rent out electronics and gadgets, ToolSpinner to rent electric drills and lawnmowers, Zaarly and Knb to rent out a little bit of everything else.

Old as it may sound, P2P renting is more high-tech than before, with websites that avoid cash for credit cards. A user creates an online listing for the item she wants to rent out, choosing her own rental fee. When someone wants the item, he keeps it on an online calendar, and the two arrange a time and place for pickup. Each site operates a little differently, but all use technology to make renting easy, safe and relatively inexpensive.

Why rent your idle things? You may not make a ton of money, but it is a good way to get some use out of idle things. The people who rent those goods are able to save thousands of dollars by renting instead of buying new.

There may be other benefits. "It brings convenience, security and adventure," says Ali Hart, JustSharclt's spokesperson. “But, more importantly, we're really connecting people and building community, too."

Get to know your neighbors and make a few dollars in the process? Sounds like a good deal.

1What can GetAround, SnapGoods, ToolSpinner, Zaarly and Krrb possibly be?

    A. the companies selling idle things

    B. the websites for P2P renting

    C. the special people good at P2P renting

    D. the courses to teach people to do P2P renting

2What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?

    A. How credit cards are used in P2P renting.

    B. Why P2P renting should be encouraged.

    C. How P2P renting works online.

    D. Where the lenders and borrowers meet.

3According to Ali Hart, what’s the greatest benefit of P2P renting?

    A. Making a considerable sum of money.

    B. Saving money and protecting the environment.   .

    C. Making the Internet convenient and safe.

    D. Keeping people in the community connected.

4What might be the purpose of the passage?

    A. To encourage people to do P2P renting online.

    B. To teach people how to rent idle things.

    C. To explain why the Internet changes our life.

    D. To guide people to be fashion consumers.

  • 24、   More and more cities across the world are experimenting with driverless vehicles on public streets. Two of the latest to conduct testing are Paris, France and Las Vegas, Nevada. The cities have used self-driving electric buses to carry passengers on short rides to try out the technology and see how humans react to it.

In Paris, two buses have been transporting passengers across a bridge between two of the city’s busiest rail stations. The vehicles, built by French company EasyMile, travel in a special safety lane created for the project. The fully electric buses can carry up to 10 people. The testing in Paris is expected to last three months. If things go well, officials plan to launch more driverless bus lines later this year.

Jean-louis Missika, deputy mayor of Paris, told reporters at a recent launch event that driveless vehicles represent a “revolution” happening in many cities around the world. He said self-driving technology is set to “change our city environment and public space in an astonishing fashion over the next 20 years”.

Transportation officials say they are planning to use the bus to connect neighborhoods to rail stations around Paris. They will also help ease traffic crowding and reduce severe pollution in the city.

In Las Vegas, the city recently launched the first driverless shuttle bus in the United States. The 12-passenger bus from French company Navya has no steering wheel or brake pedals. It uses cameras and sensors to avoid other vehicles and people while making its way down city streets. The electric vehicles can reach a top speed of 40 kilometers per hour.

The bus operated for a two-week period along one of the busiest entertainment areas in Las Vegas. Rides during the shuttle experiment were free. “The ride was smooth. It's clean and quiet and the seats are comfortable,” said Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman after taking a ride.

1What is the text mainly about?

A.More cities are using driveless vehicles.

B.Driveless electric buses are tested in some cities.

C.Some cities are trying out a new technology.

D.The driveless buses will reduce severe pollution.

2What can we learn from the second paragraph?

A.The bridge connects the Paris’ busiest bus stations.

B.A special safety lane was built to test the self-driving buses.

C.The fully electric buses can hold over 10 people.

D.More driverless bus lines have been set up.

3What does the driverless shuttle bus use to avoid other vehicles and people?

    A.Steering wheel. B.Brake pedals.

    C.Alarm. D.Cameras and sensors.

4In which column of a newspaper can we read this passage?

    A.Technology. B.Entertainment.

    C.Culture. D.Education.
