21、During my early childhood years, I would spend time with my dad in Alabama, fishing and hiking through the woods.
This is where I found my first box turtle crossing a busy road. I rescued the animal out of harm’s way. Without money for after-school programs and sports, I would spend my spare time catching crawfish, frogs, and making home-made fishing poles.
I would catch small fish, put them in barrels, and use them to catch larger fish, primarily sunfish, crappie, and catfish. I moved back to Chicago in the 3rd grade and became saddened that I was unable to swim at local beaches and eat fish that were caught from Lake Michigan.
When I started having behavioral issues in elementary school, my teachers would send me to my guidance teacher Dr. Deborah Hawes to do math and science projects.
I would intentionally disrupt (扰乱) the class, knowing that I would get sent down to her office for guidance. Dr. Hawes was passionate about science and math. Her goal was to help every student realize the importance of these subjects, and how they relate to everyday living. As a result, she was able to convince me to participate in science fair project competitions.
Surprisingly, I did incredibly well at those competitions and received numerous awards throughout the city at larger competitions. It was after 8th grade that Dr. Hawes convinced me to transfer to another high school which is famous for its agricultural sciences. This by far, was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life.
It was while attending this high school that I became interested in the study of environmental and animal sciences. My time here was what stimulated my interest in animal science and conservation and motivated me to continue my education in a local top university, where I was awarded a partial scholarship.
I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science in 2004. In 2008, I earned a Master of Science degree while conducting research on turtle nests. As a graduate student from 2006 to 2008, I guided high school and college students by helping them design research projects focusing on reptiles (爬行动物).
In 2009, I became the Savanna Districts first-ever Wildlife Biologist. I am stationed at one of the most visited refuges (保护区) in the nation, which attracts millions of hunters, fishermen, and other outdoor enthusiasts from across the nation.

22、Listening to birds and water can lower stress and improve mood, study finds. Researchers have long known there are benefits from being in nature. Living around trees can help you live longer. Walking in the woods is good for your mood. Being near water can have positive effects on your well-being.
A new study finds that natural sounds offer health benefits too. There is plenty of evidence that spending time in natural areas is good for our health-but typically this research is done from a visual perspective, but we are curious what the role is of sounds we hear in these spaces.
Some examples they found reported in those studies included decreased pain, lowered stress, improved mood, and better cognitive(认知的) function. With these results in hand, they then listened to audio recordings from 251 sites in 68 national parks across the United States.
The sites with the most natural sounds and the lowest man-made sounds were located in Alaska, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest and were far from urban areas. Only three locations with high natural sounds and low noise pollution were within 100 kilometers(62 miles)of urban areas.
However, despite human-made noises being heard most of the time at sites in urban locations, birds were still heard about 60% of the time and geophysical sounds like wind and rain heard about 19% of the time.
Not all natural sounds deliver the same benefits, the researchers found. For example, they discovered that the sounds of water had the largest impact on improving positive emotions and health outcomes, while bird sounds ease stress and annoyance. And the sounds of both birds and water were heard more than 23% of the time in the national park recording sites.
Interestingly, there was also some evidence that natural sounds have benefits over silence. There was also evidence that more different types of natural sounds-more types of birds singing rather than just one type of bird-have benefits over fewer sounds.

23、Do good stories really lead to good lives? Studies suggest they do. York University psychology professor Ian McGregor and Holmes found that if you provide students with a story about a breakup and ask them to place the blame on just one of the parties, the students begin to believe their own stories. Two weeks later, even after re-reading the story, the students still said the person they previously defended was relatively innocent. Forty weeks after the first study, the participants had forgotten almost all the details, but they still knew who to blame.
“ Stories shape memory so dramatically,” says Holmes. “Once you tell a story, it’s hard to get out of that story’s framework and they get more dramatic over time. ”
This can either form a foundation (基础) for good marriages or separate couples. People who tell stories about partners that focus on their negative qualities will remember things that fit into that thesis and forget the positive characters they reported before. Negative storytellers tended to get divorced while people who told stories about. their partners’ strengths saw their relationships strengthen over time.
Taken together, psychologists’ research makes one point: We don’t just tell stories, stories tell us. They shape our thoughts and memories and even change how we live our lives.
Storytelling isn’t just how we construct our identities. Stories are our identities. Every story is a gift, a little part of yourself that you share with the audience. Who doesn’t like gifts?
【1】How did Ian McGregor and Holmes get their finding?
A.They did researches in the lab.
B.They analyzed data from the Internet.
C.They carried out an experiment on students.
D.They used a questionnaire to get information.

24、I accidentally heard a father and daughter in their last moments together at an airport. They had announced her plane’s departure (离开). Standing near the door, he said to his daughter, “I love you. I wish you enough.” She said, “Daddy, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Daddy.” They kissed good-bye and she left.
He walked over toward the window where I was seated. Standing there, I could see he wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude (干涉) on his privacy, but he welcomed me in by asking, “Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?” “Yes, I have,” I replied.
Saying that brought back memories of expressing my love and appreciation for all my dad had done for me. Recognizing that his days were limited, I took the time to tell him face to face how much he meant to me. So I knew what this man was experiencing. “Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?” I asked.
“I am old and she lives much too far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is, her next trip back will be for my funeral,” he said.
“When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, ‘I wish you enough.’ May I ask what that means?”
He began to smile. “That’s a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone.” He paused for a moment and looked up as if he were trying to remember it in detail. He smiled even more. “When we said ‘I wish you enough,’ we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with enough good things,” he continued and then turned toward me. He then shared the following as if he were reciting it from memory:
“I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright. I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive... I wish you enough ‘Hellos’ to get you through the final ‘Good-bye’.”
He then began to sob and walked away.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mary waited anxiously for her turn in the empty dressing room. Never had she been so nervous before. This competition was of vital importance to her comeback. “If I can win today,” she said to herself, “I can dance on the national stage next month.” Three months ago, her left arm was seriously injured in a car accident. After the medical treatment, she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills.
“Hi, Mary,” in rushed her friend Jessica. “How is your arm? Is it going to influence your performance?”
“I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win the match.” said Mary with a determined look.
“Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real well-matched competitor. Come on!”
After Jessica left, Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin (旋转). “If I don’t try harder, I won’t grasp this chance.” She thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. “Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight?” she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.
A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said “Hi, I’m Linda. I am the next one to you!” Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. “This is just my competitor. Because of her, I may lose tonight.” Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream, “Oh, God, I can’t find my music tape!” Linda searched her bag but in vain. “It may be missing on the way.” With these words, she then rushed out.
