21、When we were small children trying to get to sleep, a creaking floorboard was really scary. Who or what could be making the noise? The only way to make sense of the experience was to fantasize: there’s probably a crocodile under the bed.
Children scare themselves silly like this, but while they have no knowledge of heating pipes, they have to engage with make-believe to bridge the gap between experience and knowledge. As time passes and children learn about the effect of heat on pipes and floorboard, they still often prefer the crocodile theory. Fear, within a safe context, is fun.
Children are born with all kinds of human emotions, but they are also inexperienced and longing to explore their feelings. Fantasy is an excellent, “safe” way to do it-going out to find real crocodiles to play with is neither practical nor safe.
Fantasy offers children an exploration of the too big, too wide, too dangerous world that is getting closer and more real every day. Fantasy needn’t just be dragons-it can be any element of pretend. As they grow, children need stories that include divorce, loss, war, falling in love, becoming a hero and saving the world, which help them develop emotions in various situations and get them ready for real life when it hits.
Most importantly, fantasy isn’t just for children. Growing up, facing failure and defeat, coming to terms with betrayal (背叛) and disappointment-all the stuff of emerging adult life also has to be faced and coped with. Psychological analysis and comforting have their place, but the most important tool, with which we as humans face reality, is the creation of the fantasy story.
Taking one step away from reality to the “safe” place of pretend prepares us to look at the world’s hard realities in the face. From there we can name the horrors and celebrate the joys before going back to reality, with a clearer perspective on situations that bother us.

22、If you’re in charge of a project, the key to success is getting everyone to want to help you. As a director, I point. I gently push the actors in the direction I want them to go.
In the 1986 movie nothing in common, Jackie Gleason’s character, Max Basner, gets fired from his job as a clothing salesman. The scene, shot on a boat, shows Max’s despair about being out of work. I was looking for some gesture that would allow Max to show his feelings.
Jackie had far more experience at everything than I did, and at first I was frightened. What could I possibly tell “The Great One” about acting? Out of fear I decided to direct by suggestion, and I sat down with Gleason to talk about the scene. “So Max is and, right?” I said.
Gleason nodded.
“And he’s probably still carrying his pens with his name on them – the ones he used to hand out to his customers, right?”
Gleason nodded.
“So what would you want to do with the pens after you were fired?”
He was silent for a moment. “Why don’t I throw them overboard?”
I stood up and turned toward the crew. “Hey, everybody. Jackie has a wonderful idea. Let’s shoot it”.
After filming the scene, Gleason called me over and said with a smile, “Garry, what kind of wonderful idea am I going to have tomorrow?”

23、 I grew up five minutes from Clapham Junction station in south London. Our house backed onto the railway, so the regular sound of passing trains was a sound I found noisy. Clapham Junction was famously busy, but it felt separate from the rest of London, as if its purpose was to carry people away from the capital. I felt I stood on the edge of the city.
During my last year at primary school, I spent every afternoon going across the road with my mum to eat white toast with drinking sugary tea. My mum would argue with the Greek Cypriot owner about politics. They disagreed about everything, but laughed a lot while arguing. Our life seemed uneventful.
But as time passed by, our area changed. The town became modern, and I changed a lot too. I went from a state primary school to a private secondary school. I stopped drinking sugary tea. I cared less about branded skirts but more about books. I spent less time hanging around the common but more travelling to the libraries where I found my interest.
It was then that I discovered Dodie Smith's I Capture the Castle and Elaine Dundy's The Dud Avocado. After that I scanned the shelves of bookshops for some writing. In this way I found so many writers who have influenced me: Barbara Pym, EM Delafield and so on.
Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People wasn't like any other book I'd read. For more than sixty years the rock solid, time-tested advice in this book has carried thousands of now famous people up the ladder of success in their business and personal lives. Now this previously revised and updated bestseller is available in trade paperback for the first .time to help you achieve your maximum potential throughout the next century! I read it as a guide anyway. And in a way it was.
