二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Water shortage is one of the world’s biggest challenges. The World Health Organization (WHO) thinks one in three people globally do not have easy access to clean water. Desalinating (给……脱盐) ocean water could help. But currently-available desalination units typically require high-pressure pumps (泵) to push water through filters (过滤器), which makes it difficult to reduce their size without influencing the energy-efficiency of the device. Meanwhile, they are too expensive to set up widely.

Now, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers have developed a convenient desalination machine. Unlike traditional desalination units that need replaceable filters, the MIT machine uses electricity to remove the salt and other small things from the ocean water. More importantly, the suitcase-sized device needs less power to run than a cell phone charger. It can also be powered by a small solar panel that costs less than $50. The lack of filters and the low electricity requirements make the machine extremely cheap to set up. “Even a kindergarten student can carry and use the desalination unit,” said one researcher. “Ease of use was one of the main motivations for creating the device.”

After running lab experiments using water with different salinity and turbidity (cloudiness) levels, they field-tested the device at Boston’s Carson Beach. The researchers set the box near the shore and put the feed tube into the water. In about half an hour, the device had filled a plastic drinking cup with clear, drinkable water.

The researchers believe their invention can deliver drinking water meeting WHO quality standards with a push of a button. Meanwhile, a smartphone app allows the user to control the unit wirelessly and receive real-time data on power consumption and water salinity. It also sends out information when the water is drinkable.

The MIT team is now exploring ways to bring their portable machine to market. They believe it will benefit residents of small islands or those running away from natural disasters. It could also be very useful for sailors on cargo ships and small groups of soldiers on long-term military missions.

【1】What do we know about the current desalination units?

    A.They cannot work efficiently.

B.They are usually large in size.

C.They were developed by MIT researchers.

    D.They cannot stand high-pressure conditions.

【2】What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.The working process of the new desalination device.

B.The major components of the new desalination device.

C.The original aim of the new desalination device.

D.The advantages of the new desalination device.

【3】What makes the researchers confident in their invention?

A.That it is user-friendly and effective.

B.That it can provide lots of real-time data.

C.That it can be supported by several smartphone apps.

D.That it has successfully passed many lab experiments.

【4】What does the last paragraph tell us about the new desalination device?

    A.Its influence on different people.

    B.Its future development plan.

C.Its time to enter the market.

    D.Its intended uses.

  • 22、The Palm Islands are the largest artificial islands in the world and are under construction in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. They are being developed as tourist, leisure, and residential resorts, and will increase the coastline of the country by 120 kilometres.

After four years of planning and careful consideration of the environmental issues, construction started in 2001. Dutch engineers with experience of reclaiming land from the sea were employed in the building of the first two islands. The site for all three islands is an area of the sea where the water is not very deep. Sand is taken from the seabed and sprayed into the construction site. Although the shallow water facilitates this process, the islands are still very exposed to the currents and tidal movements of the sea. Rocks are used to hold the sand in place resulting in a large crescent (月状的) structure. This acts as a breakwater and protects the islands from the sea.

The first two islands are in the shape of date palm trees and consist of a trunk and 17 frond, or leaves coming off the trunk. The first island, named Palm Jumeirah, has three five-star hotels in the trunk, and luxury homes in the leaves. It is astonishing that when these homes went on sale in 2004, they were all sold within three days.

The second palm, Jebel Ali, was started in 2002 and is designed to be an entertainment centre. Six marinas (小游艇船坞) are planned, with a water theme park, and homes built on stilts (桩柱) in the water.

The Palm Deira planned to be the largest of the three islands, with a length of 14 km and a width of 8.5 km, an area larger than the city of Paris. It will consist of residential properties, marinas, shopping malls, sports facilities, and clubs. These will be open to both residents and tourists.

More artificial islands, the World Islands, are now being constructed near the Palm Jumeirah. They consist of 300 private islands grouped into the shape of the continents of the world and will be used for estates, private homes, community islands, and resorts.

Unquestionably, these artificial islands are one of the wonders of the modern world. They will also maintain Dubais status as one of the leading tourist destinations in the region.

【1】According to the passage, all the following are right EXCEPT___________.

A.Some Dutch engineers are experienced in reclaiming land from the sea.

B.The islands are being built in the shallow water of the sea.

C.All the luxury homes on Palm Jumeirah were sold.

D.The World Islands are bigger than the Palm Jumeriah.

【2】The underlined word facilitates in the second paragraph probably means___________.

    A.holds back  B.makes easier

    C.slows down  D.leads to

【3】What is the passage written for?

A.To introduce the wonderful artificial islands.

B.To show how to build artificial islands.

C.To offer a travel service for tourists.

D.To prove the Palm Islands are the largest artificial islands in the world.

  • 23、   Last month our class project was to make a school newspaper. Our teacher divided us into groups and each group was supposed to work on a column. I missed the first planning meeting because of a dentist appointment so my group filled me in the next day. “We decided to do a gossip column,” Emily informed me. “We take along our notebooks and pay extra-close attention to everything happening around us.”

Austin read from his notebook: “James either has a cold or really bad allergies because he's been sneezing nonstop.” Jessia said, “Jackson is either going through a major growth spurt or getting ready to run a marathon because he's been eating two entire sandwiches for lunch.

This gossip-column was making me very uncomfortable. It was already spinning out of control. “Hold on,” I said, “Don't you think kids will feel embarrassed to have that stuff shared with the school?” Austin jumped in, saying that I had a point and the gossip-column idea was not that friendly.

Then we thought about for a bit, and then Emily brightened. “What if we do a friendly gossip column instead? We can call it an op — gop column!” And that's exactly what we did. The next day at school, we took out notebooks everywhere we went. But this time, we wrote down the good stuff we witnessed. Here are a few snippets from the column we ended up publishing.

Katie Myers was spotted picking up other people's litter and throwing it into the garbage can without even being asked.

Danny Gonzales was seen helping a second-grader get a kickball unstuck from a high-up, hard-to-reach place.

And Soe Zaleski was overheard very patiently explaining a maths problem to a very grateful somebody.

1What did the author's team members do the day the project was announced?

A.They were divided into three groups. B.They went to the dentist's on schedule.

C.They disused their topic with the author. D.They gathered information for their topic.

2Which of the following can best describe the author's attitude to the gossip-column?

    A.Supportive. B.Indifferent. C.Opposed. D.Objective.

3What does the underlined word “spurt” in the second paragraph most probably mean?

    A.Age limit. B.Sudden increase.

    C.Inborn disability. D.The highest height.

4What's the author's purpose in writing the passage?

A.To call on people to spread people's good deeds. B.To introduce the content of their op-gop column.

C.To show people love to catch gossip news. D.To prove it's easy to catch the gossip news.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Theo stood at the microphone. Silence settled over the hall. "Your word is onomatopoeia," said Mr Ramirez, the announcer. I got this! Theo thought. Spelling was sort of his superpower. He wasn't a math or science guy, but he had a gift for spelling.

Theo's brain fast-forwarded to the spelling bees ahead: first the county championship, then the state championship, and finally the national spelling bee. "Your answer, please, Theo?" He glanced back at Alexa, another fourth-grader, sitting on the edge of her chair. She wanted another chance at winning. If he missed his word, she'd be back in the game. But that wasn't going to happen. Theo got the right spelling.

Theo's sister, Deandra, who had also competed but missed her word, applauded with the rest of the crowd. Mr. Ramirez presented the trophy(奖杯)to Theo. He lifted both arms into the air. "I'm the alpha-best." Then he raced toward his sister. "Ha!" Theo said, making the trophy dance in front of Deandra's nose.

She rolled her eyes. "You're a terrible winner."

"What's wrong with celebrating my victory?"

Deandra crossed her arms and made a sour face. "You know, it wasn't cool the way you ignored Alexa onstage. She tried to shake your hand."

Theo shrugged. "I didn't notice. Anyway, county bee, here I come!"

"You might want to crack open the dictionary before counties. In two weeks, you'll be facing the best of the best."

"And they'll be up against methe alpha-beast."

Deandra shook her head. "Well, good luck. I think you're going to need it."

Two weeks passed in a blink. At the county bee, students from different schools gathered around onstage, some looking more worried than others. Finally, it was time for the contestants(选手)to take their seats.

After six rounds, the group of more than 100 students decreased to just seven. This was no regular spelling bee. Theo had barely made it through the last round with a lucky guess on conscience. And if he'd had to spell aerospace or conical, he'd be out already. His sister's advice suddenly made sense.

    注意:

    1.所续写的短文的词数应为150左右;

    2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
