二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、It’s hard to be a bird in a world which is in the charge of mankind.

You can hardly hear yourself sing, let alone hear the songs of your friends… and worst of all, you can’t hear a predator(捕食者). Noise is almost everywhere, especially noise from traffic.

Researchers have tried to study the influence of road noise on animals by looking at animals living near noisy roads.

“We figured out a way to have just the noise without any of the other effects of the road, and to do that we put many speakers in a forest where there was no road,” said Chris McClure, a biologist at Boise State University and The Peregrine Fund. He and his team carried out their experiment at a place popular with birds in Idaho as they fly south for the winter.

While the noise kept lots of birds away, some remained. But they had trouble putting on enough weight to support them in the next part of their migratory journey.

“They have to take food but they also have to avoid getting eaten by a predator. But these two things can’t be done at the same time because to eat, they have to look down, which means they aren’t looking at predators.”

And when it’s too loud, they can’t hear the alarm calls of other birds. So they have to waste time looking for predators instead of searching for food.

By 2050, it’s thought that enough new roads will be built to circle the planet more than 600 times. But there’s an easy solution to the noise problem—“Lowering speed limits does a lot.”

So next time you’re driving through nature, just slow down a little. It’s safer for you and the wildlife. And you can enjoy the view a little longer.

【1】Who does the word “you” in Para 2 refer to?

    A.A driver.

    B.A predator.

    C.A researcher.

    D.A bird.

【2】Why did the researchers do the experiment in a forest without roads?

A.To prevent birds from being hit by cars.

B.To separate noise from other effects of the road.

C.To test a larger number of birds.

D.To put as many speakers as possible.

【3】Why can’t birds put on enough weight with much noise around?

A.They can’t concentrate on looking for food.

B.They have to fly south for the winter.

C.They can’t hear the alarm calls.

D.They feel afraid of the noise.

【4】What is advised to do to protect birds from the noise problem?

    A.To build enough new roads.

    B.To carry out more experiments.

C.To enjoy the view a little longer.

    D.To drive slowly through nature.

  • 27、Sara tried to befriend her old friend Steve's new wife, but Betty never seemed to have anything to say. While Sara felt Betty didn't hold up her end of the conversation, Betty complained to Steve that Sara never gave her a chance to talk. The problem had to do with expectations about pacing and pausing.

Conversation is a turn-taking game. When our habits are similar, there's no problem. But if our habits are different, you may start to talk before I'm finished or fail to take your turn when I'm finished. That's what was happening with Betty and Sara.

It may not be coincidental that Betty, who expected relatively longer pauses between turns, is British, and Sara, who expected relatively shorter pauses, is American. Betty often felt interrupted by Sara. But Betty herself became an interrupter and found herself doing most of the talking when she met a visitor from Finland. And Sara had a hard time cutting in on some speakers from Latin America or Israel.

The general phenomenon, then, is that the small conversation techniques, like pacing and pausing, lead people to draw conclusions not about conversational style but about personality and abilities. These habitual differences are often the basis for dangerous stereotyping (思维定式). And these social phenomena can have very personal consequences. For example, a woman from the southwestern part of the US went to live in an eastern city to take up a job in personnel. When the Personnel Department got together for meetings, she kept searching for the right time to break in and never found it. Although back home she was considered outgoing and confident, in Washington she was viewed as shy and retiring. When she was evaluated at the end of the year, she was told to take a training course because of her inability to speak up.

That's why slight differences in conversational style tiny little things like microseconds of pause can have a great effect on one's life. The result in this case was a judgment of psychological problems even in the mind of the woman herself, who really wondered what was wrong with her and registered for assertiveness training.

【1】What did Sara think of Betty when talking with her?

    A. Betty was talkative.

    B. Betty was an interrupter.

    C. Betty did not take her turn.

    D. Betty paid no attention to Sara.

【2】According to the passage, who are likely to expect the shortest pauses between turns?

    A. Americans. B. Israelis.

    C. The British. D. The Finns.

【3】We can learn from the passage that _________.

    A. communication breakdown results from short pauses and fast pacing

    B. women are unfavorably stereotyped in eastern cities of the US

    C. one's inability to speak up is culturally determined sometimes

    D. one should receive training to build up one's confidence

【4The underlined word "assertiveness" in the last paragraph probably means ________.

    A. being willing to speak one's mind

    B. being able to increase one's power

    C. being ready to make one's own judgment

    D. being quick to express one's ideas confidently

  • 28、The secret of success

The recipe for succeeding in any given field is hardly a mystery: good ideas, hard work, discipline, imagination, perseverance and maybe a little luck. Oh, and let’s not forget failure which Dashun Wang and his colleagues at Northwestern University call “the essential prerequisite (先决条件) for success” in a new paper.

But not every failure leads to success, he adds. And what eventually separates the winners from the losers, the research shows, certainly is not persistence. One of the more interesting findings in the paper, published last October in Nature, is that the people who eventually succeeded and the people who eventually failed tried basically the same number of times to achieve their goals.

It turns out that trying again and again only works if you learn from your previous failures. The idea is to work smart, not hard. “You have to figure out what worked and what didn’t, and then focus on what needs to be improved instead of struggling around and changing everything,” says Wang. “The people who failed didn’t necessarily work less than those who succeeded. They could actually have worked more: it’s just that they made more unnecessary changes.”

As they explored “the mechanisms governing the dynamics of failure” and built their model. Wang’s team identified what they describe as previously unknown statistical signatures that separate successful groups from unsuccessful groups, making it possible to predict their final outcomes.

One such key indicator (besides keeping the stuff that works and focusing on what doesn’t) is the time between consecutive (连续的) failed attempts, which should decrease steadily. In other words, the faster you fail, the better your chances of success, and the more time between attempts, the more likely you are to fail again. “If someone has applied for a grant and they are three failures in,” Wang says, “if we just look at the timing between the failures, we will be able to predict whether they will eventually succeed or not.”

Working with such large-scale data, Wang and his colleagues were able to identify a critical point that was common to each of the hundreds of thousands of undertakings they had analyzed, a fork in the road where one path leads to a development region and one leads to a stagnation region.

“This diverging pattern of performance increases with each new attempt,” says Wang. Although in some cases it is apparent which region a person is in as early as the second attempt.

Wang points out that the existence of the tipping point cuts against the traditional explanations for failure or success, such as luck or a person’s work habits. “What we’re showing here is that even in the absence of such differences, you can still have very different outcomes,” he says. What matters is how people fail, how they respond to failure and where those failures lead.

【1】It can be learned from Paragraph 2 that ________.

A.winners are more persistent than losers

B.failure is not important for success at all

C.more trying doesn’t necessarily breed success

D.winners and losers differ in how many times they tried

【2】Wang and his colleagues believe that ________.

A.no one can obtain success without failure

B.the performance pattern is hard to identify

C.failure can sometimes help predict success

D.the critical point had been discovered by chance

【3】The underlined phrase “a stagnation region” in Paragraph 6 refers to a region ________.

    A.in its elementary stage

    B.without progress

    C.unknown to outsiders

    D.beyond recognition

【4】What is the conclusion of Wang’s research?

A.Winners try less than losers but gain more.

B.Perseverance is the utmost secret to success.

C.Working smart can turn failures into future successes.

D.Luck and work habits make little difference to the result.

  • 29、Migration (迁徙) ecologist Sissel Sjöberg had long wondered how tiny birds like the great reed warbler (大苇莺) can make it across long expanses of water or desert on their migrations. Though just half the weight of a golf ball, they fly 7, 000 kilometers between Northern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa twice a year. Now, a new study may have the answer: These nighttime birds fly well into the day — and at heights of up to 6, 000 meters, three times as high as they normally fly.

More than 4, 000 species of birds migrate across long distances each year. It’s challenging to equip small songbirds with the tracking devices that make such research possible. To see whether she could change that, Sjöberg joined the lab of Lund University Dennis Hasselquist. The pair turned to great reed warblers, relatively large songbirds that summer at a lake near Lund University. Scientists there have monitored the species’ breeding (繁殖) and behavior for 40 years.

To track the warblers, Sjöberg, Hasselquist, and colleagues equipped them with small backpacks that can monitor their journeys. As expected, the migrants usually spent their nights flying and rested during the day. But most birds that hit a water or desert crossing near dawn kept going as the sun rose, climbing high into the sky. Some birds flew higher than 6,000 meters. That’s not quite as high as the 8,000 meters geese hit, but it’s still a tall order, Sjöberg says. “We have never even imagined that songbirds regularly would fly this high.”

Such altitudes can be stressful. At 6,000 meters, oxygen isn’t enough and the temperature is below freezing. Somehow the birds are able to cope. “The ease at which they fly that high is unbelievable,” Sjöberg says.

【1】How high does the great reed warbler fly usually?

    A.Around 6, 000 meters.

    B.About 2, 000 meters.

    C.7, 000 meters.

    D.3, 500 meters.

【2】What was Sjöberg and Hasselquist’s purpose in carrying out the study?

A.To distinguish large and small birds.

B.To track the migration paths of geese.

C.To learn about the migration of small songbirds.

D.To monitor the songbirds’ breeding and behavior.

【3】How does Sjöberg feel about warblers’ high flight?

    A.Amazed.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Stressed.

    D.Worried.

【4】Which is the best title for the text?

A.Migration Biologists Sing High Praise for Tiny Birds

B.Different Species Cross Long Distances in Different Ways

C.Researchers Have Found a New Way to Study Bird Species

D.Tiny Songbirds Cross Deserts and Seas by Flying Higher Than Usual

I still remember it,like it was yesterday when my parents told me the news. It was the week  before Christmas on Thursday morning when my parents said, “Stacy, start packing your things so we can go to Florida for the holidays.”

“Okay, ”I responded. We do this every year for Christmas and New Year. It’s kind of a family tradition we have.We go every year because we like to visit some family members living in Florida. There has never been a year when we’ve missed a trip to Florida for the holidays. I was so excited to go on this  trip because Christmas is my favorite holiday, but to top it off I was going to get to celebrate it with my family.

The next morning, my mother entered my room. “Stacy, wake up! We need to go to the airport so that we can get our plane tickets to Florida before they sell out.”

I jumped out of bed and got ready as fast as I could. When we were on our way to the airport,I couldn’t stop talking and smiling because I was too excited about getting our tickets.

“Aren’t you just excited to go to Florida?” I asked.

“Yes, I am.We can finally catch up with the family and drink hot cocoa,” responded my mother.

The airport was so crowded. Some people were leaving to other countries and others were just visiting for the holiday. There was such a huge line in the airport because so many different people were buying plane tickets.

When it was our turn, my mother said, “Three tickets to Florida on Christmas Eve please.”

The lady working there responded, “Well, you guys are lucky. You got the last three tickets to Florida.”

My mother and I both smiled in relief and paid for our tickets and went back home to finish packing.
