  • 26、   In China, calligraphy occupies a distinguished position in the field of traditional art. It has always been more than simply a tool for communication, but also a means of expressing a person's inner world in an aesthetic sense.

Chinese calligraphy has endured for more than 2,000 years. Inscribed on animal bones, the oracle bone script is the earliest known writing form of Chinese characters. Following the changes of dynasties, it evolved into five main ways of writing, each with different techniques. With the unification of China by the Qin Dynasty, the Prime Minister Li Si(?—208 BC)actively promoted a uniform pattern of writing—the seal script. In the Eastern Han Dynasty, people simplified the seal characters, which had many strokes, and created the official script. The new calligraphy appears to be much neater, turning the round style into a flat one.

Today’s most popular and influential writing style, the regular script, first came into being between the Han and Wei dynasties. Just as the name implies, it features regularity and varies from the flat font to a square one. The period when the regular script flourished most was during the Tang Dynasty, when Yan Zhenqing(708—784) and Liu Gongquan(778—865) successively established schools of their own styles. In striking contrast, the cursive script puts emphasis on flexibility, for it only maintains the essence of each character and expresses more personal exertion. Therefore, its value lies more in appreciation than in practicality.

The Sage of Calligraphy Wang Xizhi(303—361,307—365, or 321—379), together with his son Wang Xianzhi (344 -386), led the art of calligraphy to its summit. Wang Xizhi was a master of all forms of Chinese calligraphy, especially the running script, and is generally recognized as the greatest Chinese calligrapher in history. People placed great value on his calligraphic works, comparing his handwriting to a “flying dragon”, vigorous yet elegant. His preface to the poems collected from The Orchid Parilion, known as a gem of Chinese calligraphy, was the most representative of his style. However, the original work is no longer available for public admiration. It is said to be buried in the tomb of Emperor Taizong of Tang(599-649) since he admired it so much.

Chinese calligraphy has also been introduced to many neighboring countries and has built up a worldwide reputation. Picasso(1881—1973),the world-renowned master of art, reportedly once said, “If I had lived in China, I must have become a calligrapher rather than a painter.” In 2009,Chinese calligraphy was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the U NESCO.

  • 27、It has been a few rough years. Many of us are finding ourselves exhausted, burned out, struggling to build balance back into our lives. We need to recharge. Water can help.

Participating in water activities such as swimming or surfing can help us enter a “flow state”. 【1】 It calms the mind, which is often absorbed by reasoning and worry, says Ricardo Gil-da-Costa, a neuroscientist and chief executive of the neurotechnology company Neuroverse, who has studied how water affects our brain.

Bodies of water also can produce a glorious sense of awe—the emotional response to something vast that expands and challenges how we see the world. 【2】 Water naturally relaxes us and helps focus our thoughts by taking away all the noise.

Water has special properties that may boost nature’s positive impact, environmental psychologists say. When we are near water, there is often less visual and auditory information to process. Our mind can rest. 【3】 Besides, its smell can stir (激发) up positive memories and associations. When we’re floating in water, our bodies can rest too, in a way we never can on land.

【4】 It moves rhythmically, producing a play of light, color and sound that is fascinating. It holds our attention, but not in an overly demanding way. 【5】 It gives our brains a break from the intense, focused, exhausting attention that much of daily life requires. “Water helps your mind wander in a positive way,” says Mare Berman, director of the Environmental Neuroscience Laboratory at the University of Chicago. “This is what is so restorative.”

    A.Most important: Water is dynamic.

    B.Researchers call this soft fascination.

C.One of the most calming properties of water is its sound.

D.It means we become fully devoted to what we’re doing.

E.The sound of water, typically steady and soft, comforts us.

F.Here’s some advice on how to use the healing power of water.

G.Awe can decrease stress and help us put things into perspective.

  • 28、Is it OK for children to count on their fingers? Generations of pupils have been discouraged by their teachers from using their hands when learning maths. But a new research article published in Frontiers in Education shows using fingers may be a very important part of maths learning.

The article, by Professor Tim Jay of Sheffield Hallam University and independent researcher Dr Julie Betenson, substantiates what parents have long felt -- that the finger games children often play at home are central to their education.

The researchers worked with 137 primary pupils aged between six and seven. All the children were given different combinations of counting and number games to play -- but only some were given exercises which involved finger-training. Some pupils played games involving number symbols, such as dominoes, shut-the-box, or snakes and ladders. Other pupils were asked to play finger games, such as being asked to hold up a given number of fingers, or numbering fingers from 1 to 5 and then having to match one of them by touching it against the corresponding(对应) finger on the other hand, or following coloured lines using a particular finger. Both these groups did a little better in maths tests than a third group of pupils who had simply had 'business as usual' with their teachers. But the group which did both the counting and the finger games performed far better.

This study provides evidence that fingers provide children with a “bridge” between different representations of numbers, which can be verbal, written or symbolic. Combined finger training and number games could be a useful tool for teachers to support children's understanding of numbers.

  • 29、   A team of researchers led by engineers from Penn State University has created the first material that heals itself in the presence of water, according to a study published in Scientific Reports. The material, inspired by squid (鱿鱼)teeth, could be used to repair instruments in water-filled environments that are difficult to access, such as the human body, or the bottom of the sea.

The researchers had been studying squids' ring teeth, which are uniquely strong and can change state from liquid to solid in the presence of water. After testing ring teeth samples from several species of squid found all over the world, the researchers uncovered the genetic code for the proteins (蛋白质)that allow the teeth to heal themselves when broken. They then changed the genetic structure of bacteria to produce the proteins so they could conduct more tests.

The researchers then made the proteins into a rubbery plastic by mixing them with a solvent ( )and letting the solvent change into a gas. The resulting material combines a soft, shapeless part of the protein that gives the plastic its self-healing characteristics and a more structured sheet of amino acids(氨基酸)that give it a solid structure.

To test the material's strength, the researchers cut it, and then put the two pieces back together with a drop of water. They found that the material healed best at 113 degrees Fahrenheit, a little warmer than the temperature of the human body, and with slight pressure from a metal tool. The material was just as strong, and able to hold the same amount of weight, before and after it was cut.

Material that heals itself in the presence of water could expand the usability of biomedical implants (移植). Of course, this material is nowhere near ready for that application, and the researchers didn't test whether the constant presence of water degrades (降低)the plastic's ability to heal itself. The researchers next plan to study how their technology could help heal wounds.

1According to paragraph 3, the rubbery plastic become self-healing in combination with.

A.amino acids B.another kind of rubber

C.a mixture of gases D.some protein

2In paragraph 4, the researchers carried out a test to check whether the material.

    A.was fit for human body

    B.would melt at high temperatures

C.could be connected with the metal

D.would recover its original strength after healing itself

3What is the authors attitude towards the self-healing material?

    A.Positive. B.Objective. C.Doubtful. D.Critical.

4What is the main idea of the text?

A.A kind of self-healing teeth was made from squids' ring teeth.

B.The genetic code of squids' special teeth has been uncovered.

C.Super-strong material inspired by squid teeth is self-healing.

D.A special rubbery plastic is used to replace squids' teeth.
