    A Nation of Animal Lovers

The British are traditionally a nation of animal lovers. This is clear from the large number of animal programmes on TV. There are programmes about wildlife in Britain and other countries, and about pets at home. There are programmes like Animal Hospital about sick animals and the working lives of animal doctors. Some programmes try to find new homes for unwanted or homeless animals. All these programmes are very popular. There is a pet in more than half of the homes in the UK(52.3%). The most popular pets are cats.

    Battersea Dogs and Cats Home

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London is a very famous home for unwanted dogs and cats. It was started in 1860 by Mrs. Mary Tealby, because she was worried about all the homeless animals on the streets of London. Since it opened, the home has taken in more than 3 million dogs and cats. In 2006, over 11,000 dogs and cats came to the home. By the end of the year, homes were found for 5,000 of them. The home even has its own magazine, Paws.

The rat at platform one has just made your train late!

An officer was called to Stirling station today because passengers were worried about a large white rat on the line. Three trains passed over it, but the rat was unhurt. The Scottish railway company, Scotrail, closed the line. Then passengers watched as the officer carefully caught the rat. It bit him, but he took it away safely.

An officer from Scotrail said, “We try to protect all wild animals and pets. At first the rat was very frightened, but now he’s fine.”

“We’ve called him Ronnie. He needs a good home. People think rats are dirty. But they make great pets!”

  • 27、Practice self-control by setting goals and sticking to them

Make your goals specific and long-term. Psychology studies have shown that abstract (抽象的), big-picture thinking leads to self-control. Instead of focusing on the moment, look toward bigger goals like success in school or sports.1

●Write down you goals and hang them up where you can see them regularly.2

●Make behavioral goals too. Commit to behaving yourself in public and not having any unintended outbursts.

3Get straight A's, keep practicing guitar until you're comfortable enough to play a gig, or exercise four times a week. Stick to your goals seriously.

●When you are to break a promise or a goal, take a deep breath and think about why you set the goal in the first place. That long term commitment is more important than your momentary impulse (冲动).

●Make sure your goals are specific.4

●Try setting up a punishment and reward system for yourself.5Likewise, if you decide to skip a workout, make up for it by working out twice as long the next day. Practices like these will lead to control over your desires and actions.

●Make specific long-term goals with specific short-term ways to achieve them.

    A.Keep your goals positive.

B.Remind yourself of your goals regularly.

C.General goals are much easier to forget about.

D.Focusing on the future will help you behave in the present.

E.Move up to harder goals like making the starting basketball team.

F.If you go a week sticking to a strict diet, give yourself a "cheat day."

G.Stick with your goals and soon you'll be in total control of your thoughts and actions.

  • 28、The writer Margaret Mitchell is best known for writing Gone with the Wind, first published in 1936. Her book and the movie based on it, tell a story of love and survival during the American Civil War. Visitors to the Margaret Mitchell House in Atlanta, Georgia, can go where she lived when she started composing the story and learn more about her life.

Our first stop at the Margaret Mitchell House is an exhibit area telling about the writer’s life. She was born in Atlanta in 1900. She started writing stories when she was a child. She started working as a reporter for the Atlanta Journal newspaper in 1922. One photograph of Ms. Mitchell, called Peggy, shows her talking to a group of young college boys. She was only about one and a half meters tall. The young men tower over her, but she seems very happy and sure of herself. The tour guide explains: “Now in this picture Peggy is interviewing some boys from Georgia Tech, asking them such questions as ‘Would you really marry a woman who works?’ And today it’d be ‘Would you marry one who doesn’t?’ “

The Margaret Mitchell House is a building that once contained several apartments. Now we enter the first floor apartment where Ms. Mitchell lived with her husband, John Marsh. They made fun of the small apartment by calling it “The Dump”.

Around 1926, Margaret Mitchell had stopped working as a reporter and was at home healing after an injury. Her husband brought her books to read from the library. She read so many books that he bought her a typewriter and said it was time for her to write her own book. Our guide says Gone with the Wind became a huge success. • 29、Once there was a poor lady who lived on a hill near the seashore. Her husband died. She had no children and lived by herself. She was so poor that she had to work hard every day.

But one night as she sat at the table, the lady said to herself, “I wish I could be of some use to the world. Why can't I do good to someone else besides myself?” At last, she came up with an idea.

She decided that she would keep a lighted lamp at the window for the sailors every night. She found that ships sometimes hit the rocks in the sea, since there was no lighthouse to warn them of the danger at night. Maybe her lamp would warn them when their ships came near the rocks on the coast.

The lady felt glad when the thought came into her mind. She found that, if she worked an hour longer each night, she could make enough money to pay for the oil for the lamp. So she worked late and made money to buy the oil and then she placed the lamp at the window each night. In this way she saved many lives.

She did this for five years without any reward, or the hope of reward. However, good deeds are often found out. The sailors whose lives had been saved began to send gifts to her from faraway countries. They sent her tea from China, cloth from India, silk from France and grapes from Spain. But the poor lady did not need these gifts to make her happy. She gave many of them to the poor and the sick.

She was happy with the thought that she was doing something good. So, as long as she lived, she would light her lamp each night and place it at the window.

【1】How might sailors feel when they saw the lamp at the window?

    A.Nervous.

    B.Thankful.

    C.Sorry.

    D.Proud.

【2】How did the lady get the money to pay for the oil?

A.She sold tea and grapes to others.

B.She raised money from the sailors.

C.She got money from the government.

D.She worked one more hour each night.

【3】What can we know about the lady?

    A.She knew the sailors.

    B.She worked on a ship.

    C.She was kind-hearted.

D.She lived alone on the sea.

    【4】Why was the lady happy?

A.Because more and more people knew her.

B.Because she became much richer than before.

C.Because she received great reward from others.

D.Because she helped many people in her own way.

【5】What's the best title for the text?

    A.The Lady's Lamp

A new analysis of the running habits of over a million people showed that exercise is contagious — though this depends on who's spreading it.

For the study, two scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology used 1 tracker data to study the running habits of around 1.1 million people, who have around 3.4 million social network connections. Over five years, the 2 ran a collective 350 million kilometers, and their runs were posted online for their friends to see.

The researchers found an additional kilometer run by friends influences an individual to run an additional 0.3 kilometers. An additional kilometer per minute run by friends 3 a person to run an additional 0.3 kilometers per minute faster than usual. And if those friends run an extra 10 minutes, that person is likely to run about three minutes longer than they would have. The influencing effect is strongest on the same day 4 are posted and appears to diminish with time, the authors wrote.

The findings suggested that a runner's peers did influence him or her to run more, but not all users exerted 5 influence on their buddies. Individuals were more likely to be encouraged by less active peers than by more active ones.

"Social comparisons may provide an explanation for these results," the study's authors wrote. This theory, they added, "6 that we self-evaluate by comparing ourselves to others."

But do we make comparisons to peers performing better than us, or to those performing worse? That's been a subject of 7, the researchers said.

Comparisons to those ahead of us may 8 our own self-improvement, while comparisons to those behind us may create competitive behavior to protect one's superiority.

The findings show how effective 9 these real-time networks may be to help scientists design different methods to minimize the impact of social ills and maximize the 10 of social benefits.
