二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、The parents of a young man with Down Syndrome (唐氏综合症) have made an incredible move to set up his future after he faced constant rejections when looking for work.

After graduation, Anthony, 19-year-old, should have faced multiple career choices about which door to open, but when he actually tried those doors, one after the other, it was locked. Danijela and John Vrkic, from Canberra, were genuinely concerned about their son's future. It was rather difficult for people with a disability, especially those with an intellectual disability, to find any type of work. Inspired by their son, they decided to leave their respective careers behind to build a business.

Mrs. Vrkic got to work armed with her traditional family recipe for "krofhe', or doughnuts (甜甜圈),which dates back over four generations. She tested the market by sharing her homemade krofne at her previous office with colleagues and friends. Fortunately, it proved to be a hit. After four years in business, there are Krofine Canberra pop-up shops at a number of shopping centres, and an online store is also available.

Today, Krofne is a much loved, disability-inclusive family business and a social enterprise in Canberra. Employment opportunities for people with special needs have been generated. The specially designed KINECT program has highlighted how important it is for people with a disability to feel valued and included in the community. Mrs. Vrkic is an incredibly passionate advocate for inclusivity. She feels if somebody has a disability, it doesn't necessarily mean that they can't work. What she would like to see is for Australia to be inclusive—that every organisation understands and employs the disabled. That is her goal.

On the International Day of People with Disabilities, Mrs. Vrkic was invited to speak at Parliament House. She said, “We're a very small fish in the sea, if our business can do it, why can't other people ?”

【1】What did the parents do incredibly?

    A.They made doughnuts to sell.

    B.They raised a child with a disability.

C.They quit their jobs to help their son.

D.They weren't discouraged after losing jobs.

【2】Why were Mrs. Vrkic's doughnuts popular?

A.Because she drew the inspiration from her son.

B.Because she followed the recipe passed down in her family.

C.Because she applied the technique learned from her previous job.

D.Because she got assistance from her previous colleagues and friends.

【3】Which of the following words can best describe Mrs. Vrkic?

    A.Caring and ambitious.

    B.Elegant and determined.

    C.Humorous and brave.

    D.Passionate and curious.

【4】What can be inferred from Mrs. Vrkic's saying?

    A.Her success can be followed.

B.Her business needs to be expanded.

C.Every business can succeed with united efforts.

D.Every business can offer the disabled assistance.

  • 27、Herta Müller, the Romanian-born German writer, has won the 2009 Nobel Prize for Literature. The award was announced in Stockholm on Thursday.

Ms. Müller, 56, immigrated to Germany from Romania in 1987. She is the first German writer to win the Nobel in literature since Günter Grass in 1999 and the 13th winner writing in German since the prize was first given in 1901. She is the 12th woman to win the literature prize. But unlike previous winners like Doris Lessing and V. S. Naipaul, Ms. Müller is relatively unknown outside of literary circles in Germany.

“I am very surprised and still cannot believe it,” Ms. Muller said in a statement delivered by her publisher in Germany. “I can’t say anything more at the moment.”

She has written some 20 books, but just 5 have been translated into English, including the novels “The Land of Green Plums” and “The Appointment.”

At the news conference on Thursday at the German Publishers & Booksellers Association in Berlin, where she lives, Ms. Müller, wearing all black and sitting on a leopard-print chair, appeared nervous with all the cameras flashing on her.

When asked what it meant that her name would now be mentioned in the same breath as German greats like Thomas Mann and Heinrich Böll, Ms. Müller remained philosophical. “I am now nothing better and I’m nothing worse,” she said, adding, “My inner thing is writing. That’s what I can hold on to.”

Earlier in the day, at a news conference in Stockholm, Peter Englund, secretary of the Swedish Academy, said Ms. Müller was honored for her “very, very distinct special language” and because “she has really a story to tell about cruelty and repression in a village much like the one Müller grew up in.”

The awards ceremony was planned for Dec. 10 in Stockholm. As the winner, Ms. Müller would receive about $1.4 million.

【1】Ms. Müller was surprised at the news about her winning the award because ________.

A.she was born a Romanian and became a famous German writer

B.she had missed a lot of chances to win the prize

C.she had expected to win the prize eagerly for long

D.she thought she was just an unknown writer in this field

【2】By saying “I am now nothing better and I’m nothing worse”, Ms. Müller meant that ________.

    A.she thought highly of herself

    B.she thought nothing of herself

    C.she was very modest

D.she was no worse than the other German writers

【3】What’s the best title of the passage?

    A.The Biography of Herta Müller

B.Herta Müller Wins Literature Nobel Prize

C.Herta Müller, a Great Successful Romanian Writer

D.The Great Awards Ceremony for Herta Müller

  • 28、Leonardo da Vincis Mona Lisa is perhaps the most famous portrait in the world, but now some suspect that the woman with the mysterious smile may not be a woman after all. They are suggesting that the Mona Lisa may be a self-portrait, da Vinci in drag (女装).

Italys National Committee for Cultural Heritage (INCCH) is carrying out the research. They think the artist, who died in 1519, was buried at a French castle and they plan to dig up his body. Using CSI-style technology, they want to rebuild da Vincis face. Jason Rosenfeld, a member of INCCH, says, It shows the reason why we preserved Einsteins brain or King Tuts mummy (木乃伊), which throws light on the problem we are working on.

Now we want to get the body of Leonardo. We want to see what he died of, we want to see his DNA, we want to see the size of his head, and what his facial feature were like, so we can know whether this was a self-portrait.

The Mona Lisa was painted around 500 years ago. Beyond that, we know almost nothing about the painting that is now on display at the Louvre in Paris.

But will the exhumation (发掘) discover the truth behind the Mona Lisa? Not likely, according to Rosenfeld. If the French government really wants to help find out what this is about, what they should do is allow us to clean the Mona Lisa. We will learn much more from it and understand it better if we are allowed to clean the painting than by digging up a body.

【1】What can be learnt from the text?

    A. The French government will be in charge of digging up da Vincis body.

    B. The INCCH will learn more if allowed to clean the Mona Lisa painting.

    C. The exhumation will help uncover the truth behind the Mona Lisa.

    D. The French government wants to help find out the truth.

2Which of the following is TRUE about the Mona Lisa?

    A. It is now preserved in France.

    B. It is a self-portrait of da Vinci in drag.

    C. It has the same long history as King Tuts mummy.

    D. It was painted in 1519.

3Whats the question that the INCCH is researching on?

    A. What da Vinci died of.

    B. Whether da Vinci liked dressing in drag.

    C. Whether the Mona Lisa was painted by da Vinci.

    D. Whether the Mona Lisa is da Vincis self-portrait.

4What the underlined phrase, throws light on, in the second paragraph mean?

    A. Pays attention to.

    B. Makes people feel confident.

    C. Makes it possible for people to know.

    D. Draws peoples attention.

  • 29、The Internet is a growing new world that has been developing ever since it was created many years ago. The only reason Internet sales are not taxed (征税) is because we did not know the Internet would be used to sell products when it was created. Internet sales are no different than going into the store to buy the exact same product except for the fact that Internet sales are not taxed.

When buying online, people cannot see and touch the product the same way they could in a store. To fix this, customers are going into the store to see the product. Then if they like the product, they buy it online to save money on the sales tax. This is a form of tax evasion (逃税) if you ask me!

Everyone has to pay the tax in the store so they should have to pay taxes online as well. Also, the added money brought in through Internet taxing could help the government to fund (为……拨款) certain policies and other things that they could not do without the added funds. This could go toward the country’s schools or other things necessary for society to function well. These funds could be extremely beneficial because of the recession (经济衰退) that the country is in at this point. Internet taxing is a way to increase those funds and in turn improve the quality of life for all who live in that country.

In conclusion, there are many more positives than negatives in the argument over taxing Internet sales. I do understand that I may have to pay more if I want to buy something online, but the funds stay within my society and help my country. The added cost may hurt me at first but in the end, the funds will help me and others in our country.

    【1】The text mainly discusses _____.

A.whether it is a good way to buy things online.

B.whether Internet sales should be taxed.

C.why people love to buy things online.

D.why Internet sales are not taxed.

【2】Internet sales are not taxed because _____.

    A.selling online was unexpected.

B.they are different from store sales.

C.people don’t know how to tax them.

D.many people are against taxing them.

【3】What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

A.Online shoppers find it difficult to buy satisfactory goods.

B.Customers get better products at a lower price online.

C.Problems related to online shopping are hard to fix.

D.Online shoppers probably try to avoid paying tax.

【4】According to the author, taxing Internet sales _____.

    A.is good for all people.

B.can help the country out of the recession.

C.can help improve the quality of products.

D.is beneficial to the development of Internet.
