  • 26、Norm Pethrick, a 36-year-old man in Australias northern city Darwin, was praised on Thursday for jumping onto a crocodiles back to save his wife Wendy at Litchfield National Park, a popular tourist spot southwest of Darwin, a local newspaper reported.

Ms Pethrick was standing on a river bank Wednesday afternoon when the saltwater crocodile lunged (扑), locking its jaws on both her legs as it tried to drag her underwater.

Norm Pethrick, who with his wife had been collecting water, immediately went to help her. He jumped onto the back, poked (戳) the eyes of the crocodile and finally got his wife free.

Ms Pethrick was later taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for a medical treatment. The doctors said she was suffering eight puncture wounds (伤口) in her right leg, a puncture wound in her left leg and a serious cut to one of her fingers.

This could have been a fatal and tragic situation,” said the general manager of Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH), Dr Len Notaras, according to a local report.

He said Ms Pethrick was saved by her husband’s “quick and diligent actions”.

Dr Notaras also said she would remain in hospital for three to four days and have an operation to clean the wounds, which are easy to get infected because of bacteria (细菌) on the teeth of the crocodile.

  • 27、Over the years working as a psychologist, I have found that the following habits seem to be the most important for developing a happier, healthier mind,

    【1】

By nature, most of us are critical of our emotions—especially the difficult ones: You feel anxious and afraid and then immediately criticize yourself for being weak. Though something feels bad, it doesn’t mean it is bad. 【2】 When your muscles are painful after a good workout, your pain is a sign of growth and health. Sometimes pain is helpful. By avoiding it or trying to get rid of it, you could be making things worse on yourself.

    Be realistic with your expectations.

When you create an expectation in your head—which is really just you imagining the thing you want to be true—it relieves some of that anxiety and uncertainty for the time being. But in reality, your expectations are merely fictions in your own mind.

Expectations have their place. 【3】 If you want a calmer and more peaceful mind, get into the habit of checking on your expectations regularly and make sure they aren’t too far outside of reality.

Practice compassion (同情) in your self-talk.

【4】When you’re too negative and particular about yourself, you turn normal embarrassment into intense shame; everyday depression into anger; ordinary sadness into desperation. If you want to start being kinder toward yourself, follow The Other Golden Rule: 【5】 The next time you feel bad, imagine that a good friend felt the same way and came to you for support and advice... What would you say to them?

    A.Acknowledge your emotions.

    B.Try to avoid painful emotions.

    C.Negative self-talk worsens your emotions.

D.In much of life, pain is actually a good thing.

E.Treat yourself like you would treat a good friend.

F.But they may run wild and cause negative effects if ignored.

G.They teach your brain that your emotions are bad and dangerous.

  • 28、We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money, but most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late.

Why did we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You’re a lucky dog.” Is he really on your side? If he says, “You’re a lucky guy” or “You’re a lucky gal”, that’s being friendly. But “lucky dog”? There’s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck.

“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Being wrapped(包裹)up in this expression is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says consist with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.

【1】When recalling(回忆)things that have happened between our friends and us, we may   .

    A. feel good to have friends standing by us

    B. think it was a mistake to view some people as friends

    C. misread some of our friends’ true feelings

    D. keep looking back to find mistakes we’ve made

    【2】By saying “You’re a lucky dog,” the speaker .

    A. is just being friendly

    B. expresses the same meaning as “You’re a lucky guy”

    C. may have a hidden envious feeling

    D. intends to put the listener down

【3In listening to a person, the important thing is .

    A. to listen carefully to how he utters his words

    B. to observe his tone, his posture, and his clothes

    C. to stop for a while and decide whether to believe him

    D. to check his words against his manner, tone and posture

【4】This passage tries to tell you how to   .

    A. avoid mistakes in understanding what people tell you

    B. say things appropriately to avoid mistakes

    C. keep people always faithful to you

    D. avoid regret about making mistakes

  • 29、There’s something rotten in Rio and the smell is coming from the huge stacks of rubbish piled up on sidewalks all over the city. Rio's street sweepers chose the carnival holiday to demand better salaries. Their wages start at roughly $400 a month.

There could hardly be a better time for them to prove their importance. The streets were left a mess after hundreds of carnival parades and now, rubbish pries up in both poor and uptown neighborhoods and in tourist areas like Ipanema or Copacabana beach.

The president of Rio's rubbish collecting company has even appealed to the population to store rubbish at home whenever possible. He says 30% of the city's sweepers have gone on strike. Some of those who have been working have been threatened by the strike movement so now the police have been deployed alongside rubbish collectors to keep them sage as they go about their business.

The strike has divided opinions in Rio. On social media, many support the sweepers' demands for better salaries. Others say they are opportunists and the situation is a big embarrassment to the city.

But Brazil's culture of littering the streets doesn't help. A video that went viral online shows that even authorities have a problem with that. Rio's mayor, Eduardo Paes, is seen throwing what seemed to be the rest of an apple on the sidewalk—and now promised to impose himself a fine for his wrongdoing. His government recently created a programme to keep Rio's residents from littering the streets.

1Rio's street cleaners go on strike to ________.

    A. prove their importance   B. ask for higher salaries

    C. appeal to the public not to litter   D. threaten the government

2The reason why the police are involved is that ________.

    A. the police are called out to put down the strike

    B. the police are called up to collect rubbish for the time being

    C. the police are required to protect some cleaners

    D. the police are sent to arrest people who litter around

3The author's attitude to Brazil's culture of littering is ________.

    A. critical   B. objective

    C. supportive   D. optimistic

4The purpose of writing the passage is to ________.

    A. criticize street sweepers of Rio for misusing their rights

    B. call attention to the embarrassing situation of Rio

    C. describe the effect or the strike on people

    D. inform people of the present situation of Rio

  • 32、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As an only child, Nicole Renae often felt lonely in her youth. But that all changed when she turned ten. For her birthday, her grandmother surprised her with an adorable puppy named Chloe.

From the very start, the two were inseparable. “She was my best friend,” Renae says. Every ounce of love Renae gave, the little dog returned tenfold. “She was such a sweet dog,” Renae says. “She’d lick your face forever if you didn’t stop her.”

But when Renae was 14, her father got a new job that came with a devastating caveat: He’d be working from home, and the house needed to be free of audible distractions. “Chloe was very yappy,” Renae says. “I was just a kid, so I didn’t have any choice in the matter. I didn’t want to get rid of my dog. I just felt so sick and sad about it.”

With no easier option, the family surrendered Chloe to a humane society. Though they were optimistic that the dog would find a new home with people who loved her, they couldn’t know for sure. “I called the humane society to try to find out what happened to her,” Renae says, “but they couldn’t tell me anything. So I never knew.”

In time, Renae grew up, got married, and had a child of her own. But her family didn’t feel quite complete. Remembering the joy that having a dog had brought her as a kid, Renae wanted her daughter to experience the same. She had it in her mind that she would adopt a puppy, but then one day she saw a post on Facebook about a senior dog that needed a new home. The dog in the photograph looked a lot like Chloe-she was even named Chloe. In an instant it was decided: She would adopt this older dog.
