二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   White chocolate, German chocolate, ice cream: There are hundreds of types of birthday cake in the world, each beautiful in its own sugary way. You are likely to enjoy one during at least one (hopefully all) of your birthday parties. But in between delicious bites of cake, have you ever stopped and wondered, “Why am I eating this? What makes this dessert fit to celebrate the day of my birth?”

It’s because you are as important and beloved as the gods. Kind of.

The ancient Egyptians are thought to have “invented” the celebration of birthdays. They believed when pharaohs (法老) were crowned, they became gods, so their coronation (加冕) day was a pretty big deal. That was their “birth” as a god.

Ancient Greeks borrowed the tradition, but realized that a dessert would make the celebration all the more meaningful. So they baked moon-shaped cakes to offer up to Artemis, goddess of the moon. They decorated them with lighted candles to make the cakes shine like the moon. Hence, it is the reason why we light our birthday cakes on fire.

Modern birthday parties are said to get their roots from the 18th century German celebration “Kinderfeste”. On the morning of a child’s birthday, he or she would receive a cake with lighted candles that added up to the kid’s age, plus one. This extra candle was called the “light of life,” representing the hope of another full year lived.

And then, torture — because no one could eat the cake until after dinner. The family replaced the candles as they burned out throughout the day. Finally, when the moment came, the birthday child would make a wish, try to blow out all the candles in one breath, and dig in. Like modern tradition, the birthday girl or boy wouldn’t tell anyone the wish so it would come true.

Since the ingredients (原料) to make cakes were pretty expensive, this birthday custom didn’t become popular until the Industrial Revolution. More ingredients were available, which made them cheaper, and bakeries even started selling pre-baked cakes.

1What is the passage mainly about?

A.The origin of birthday cakes. B.The significance of birthday cakes.

C.The history of birthday parties. D.The introduction of cake production.

2Who established the tradition of celebrating birthdays with cakes according to the passage?

    A.Germans. B.Pharaohs.

    C.Ancient Greeks. D.Ancient Egyptians.

3The underlined word “torture” in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to ________.

    A.pleasure B.replacement

    C.sharing D.suffering

4Why was the birthday cake custom unpopular before the Industrial Revolution?

    A.The transport was inconvenient.

B.The ingredients of cakes were expensive.

C.The cake could not be eaten before dinner.

D.The bakeries would not sell pre-baked cakes.

  • 27、If you live in a place where most people speak the language you are learning, you may use the language for several hours each day. But you may not have these chances to practice English. You may even be self-taught.【1】It is not very difficult, but it does take effort and practice.

    Think in single words.

【2】In your head, try to name each object in your surroundings. As you continue with this, it becomes more of a habit, so things are going to pop up into your head – computer, telephone, chair, and desk. Whatever it is, wherever you are. You can also do this at home when you wake up and before you go to sleep.

    【3】

Another exercise is describing in your mind objects you don't know the words for. An example would be if you couldn't think of the word “garage,” Hinshaw says. “If you're looking at your house and you see your garage, but you can't think of the name in English. You can say, 'The place inside where I put my car.”

    Think in sentences.

The next exercise is thinking in simple sentences. For example, if you are sitting in a park, you can tell yourself things like, “It's such a beautiful day” and “People are playing sports with their friends.”【4】

    Describe your day.

Another exercise experts suggest is to describe your daily activities. You can mentally make plans in the morning when you wake up. 【5】So the skill level is a little higher.

    A.Describe unknown words.

B.Guess the meaning of a new word.

C.This would require future verb tenses.

D.A good first step is to think in individual words.

E.Hinshaw says doing this can help learners of any language.

F.Once this becomes easy, you can move on to more difficult sentences.

G.The good news is that thinking in English can bring you a huge step closer to fluency!

  • 28、   Whether they’re speeding in to deliver packages or spotting victims in disaster zones, clouds of flying robots could have a range of important functions in the future, a new study found. The robots can change from driving to flying without hitting each other and could offer benefits beyond the traditional flying-car concepts of science fiction, the study said.

The ability to both fly and walk is common in nature. For instance, many birds, insects and other animals can do both. Robots with similar features could fly over obstacles on the ground or drive under overhead obstacles. But currently, robots that are good at one mode(模式) of transportation are usually bad at others, study lead author Brandon Araki and his colleagues said in their new study. The researchers previously developed a robot named the “flying monkey” that could run and fly, as well as grasp items. However, the researchers had to program the paths the flying monkey would take; in other words, it could not find safe routes by itself.

Now, these scientists have developed flying cars that can both fly and drive through a simulated(模拟) city-like setting that has parking spots, landing pads and no-fly zones. Moreover, these drones(无人机) can move autonomously without hitting each other, the researchers said. “Our vehicles can find their own safe paths”, Araki told Live Science.

“The most important meaning of our research is that vehicles that combine flying and driving have the potential to be both much more efficient and much more useful than vehicles that can only drive or only fly”, Araki said.

The scientists warned that automated flying taxis are likely not coming anytime soon. “Our current system of drones certainly isn’t powerful enough to actually carry people right now.” The scientists detailed their findings on June I at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Singapore.

1Which of the following is true about the research on flying vehicles?

A.It focuses on two- mode creatures.

    B.It has made functional breakthroughs.

C.It will come to an end in vain.

D.It is based on the traditional concepts.

2What’s the drawback of the “flying monkey”?

A.It could avoid obstacles. B.It could both run and fly.

C.It knew how to catch things. D.It followed the set routes.

3What would be the best title for this text?

    A.No More Flying Robots.

    B.Let Go Of Flying Monkey.

    C.Here Come Autonomous Flying Cars.

D.No Flying Taxi on The Way.

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When Ryan first turned up for Ms. Rose's class, he was kind of nervous because he'd heard Ms. Rose could be a real monster sometimes. But as Ms. Rose started with an overview of what they'd be doing during the year in a pleasant voice, she looked nice enough. Then with a more serious tone, she warned the students that she'd be giving them homework assignments, which were not to be handed in late, and they were to be completed fully. "No excuses! No extensions!”

That day she assigned the class its first homework. They had to do a sheet of math problems and read a short story.  It wasn't due until Thursday, but she suggested they do it immediately that night. "Homework has a way of piling up, "she said, her eyes narrowing slightly. But today was only Monday! There was plenty of time, Ryan thought.

So when school was over, Ryan and his friends ran off to play baseball. Exhausted after the game, he entertained himself with his favorite TV show, leaving his homework aside on his desk. Days passed quickly. Ryan was free of worries most of the time, while Ms. Rose just occasionally reminded them of the deadline, and that she wouldn't tolerate anyone not having done it.

Wednesday, after dinner, he suddenly realized that his homework was due next day. He raced to his desk and was greeted with the most curious thing. The pile of homework really had grown taller. Oh no! What was he going to do? It looked as if the papers had towered over him, almost soaring up to the ceiling.

He really needed to get started. He did a lite bit here and there, but he kept getting distracted by other work waiting for him. Finally, he couldn't even locate the homework he'd started with. Frustrated, he gave up and went to bed.  Ryan tossed and turned all night and had bad dreams of paper mountains burying him alive.

The next morning, when Ryan entered the classroom, he found Ms. Rose waiting, her faced dark with rage.  Obviously, Ryan wasn't the only one who suffered from the mysteriously growing assignments.
