26、Scientists and educators in the US and China say it’s important to introduce very young children to new technologies. 【1】 They say that with the right approach, children learn not to be frightened of abstract thinking.
Even before children learn to read and write, they can manipulate — move and control images. 【2】
Mitchel Resnick is co-developer of a code-learning program called Scratch Jr. He says that is exactly what programming is all about.
“Each block tells the character what to do. You snap the blocks together, and you’ve made a computer program. 【3】 This block make the cat go to the right. This one makes the cat jump. By snapping them together I make a computer program that makes it move and then jump.”
Parents decide how much time their children can spend using modern technology. But Sandra Calvert, director of the Children’s Digital Media Center at Georgetown University, says it’s all around us.
“【4】 Just as it’s a worry that there may be too much screen time, there is also a concern that our children will be left behind if they don’t know how to use the technologies that are going to shape the 21st century careers, jobs and how we are going to succeed as a nation.” Children between the ages of 4 and 15 use tools and machines at so-called “maker spaces” in Beijing. The maker space basically serves as an open-access workshop. 【5】 The young people are part of the so-called “maker movement,” a do-it-yourself community connecting people who like to make things with their hands.
A.There, children use tools and machines like 3D printers to create and build projects.
B.Each block has a different behavior.
C.Computer scientists perform lots of research in computer theory and systems.
D.They advise developing skills from computer programming to designing electronic circuits.
E.Tablet computers with touch — sensitive screens are perfect for lining up simple commands.
F.The education and development of our children are extremely important.
G.We live in the digital age.
27、 A UPS (United Parcel Service) driver Ryan Arens was making his rounds near a pond in Bozeman, Montana, when he heard a sound. “Like a cry for help,” he told the Dodo. It was December 2019, and about 15 feet from the frozen banks was the source of that cry-a struggling dog with half of its body underwater, trying to stick to a thin layer of ice. How she got there no one knows, but an elderly man was already on the scene, determined to save her. He’d entered the pond in a rowboat and was trying hard to cut the ice with a rock to create a path to the dog. It was slowly going, and Arens,44, thought he stood a better chance.
“Animals are my weakness,” he told the Great Falls Tribune, explaining why he took off his clothes without hesitation, even though the temperature was in the 30s, and took over the rowboat.
His heart beating wildly, Arens slid closer to the dog and used the other man’s rock to smash away at the ice. He gave one too strong hit and slipped off the boat, falling into 16 feet of icy water.
He resurfaced in time to see the dog going under. Using nervous energy to keep warm, he swam about five feet toward her, took hold of her collar, and pulled her to the ice. He then lifted the dog into the boat and slid it back to the shore, where anxious bystanders carried the dog to the home of the elderly man, a retired animal doctor. Once in the house himself, Arens jumped into a warm shower with the dog until they both felt warm. A few more minutes in the pond, the doctor told Arens, and she would have likely suffered cardiac arrest(心脏骤停).
The next day, Arens was back working in the same neighborhood when the dog’s owner came over to thank him for saving Sadie. “Would you like to meet her?” he asked. He opened the door to his pickup, and immediately out raced Sadie. She went straight to Arens, leaping on him and bathing him in wet kisses. “That special delivery”,says Arens, “was the highlight of my UPS career.”

28、 I want to talk about the economy. Not "the economy" we hear about endlessly in the news each day and in politicians' speeches. I want to talk about the real economy, the one we live in day by day.
Most people aren't particularly interested in "the economy". "Share prices are flying high; interest rates are soaring(猛增的); the Dow Jones Index closed sixty-three points down on 8472.35. " We hear this and subconsciously switch off.
Notice that "the economy" is not the same as the economy, "The economy" is what men in suits play with to make vast personal wealth. The economy is where the rest of us live on a daily basis, earning our living, paying our taxes, and purchasing the necessities of life.
We are supposed to be benefiting from all the advantages of a well-off society. So why do we feel tired and stressed? We have no time for anything other than work, which is ridiculous given the number of labor-saving devices in our lives. Our towns become more and more crowded. We poison our air and seas, and our food is full of chemicals. There's something wrong here. If times were truly good, then you may think we'd all feel optimistic about the future. Yet the majority of us are deeply worried. More than 90 percent of us think we are too concerned about ourselves and not concerned enough about future generations.
The term "economic expansion" suggests something desirable, but expansion simply means spending more money. More spending doesn't mean that life is getting better. We all know it often means the opposite—greed, crime, poverty, pollution. More spending merely feeds our whole economic system, which is based on production and consumption. Unless money keeps circulating, the economy breaks down. If we don't keep consuming, the whole system goes into stalemate(僵局).
How do we break the cycle and make some changes? We need to become far more aware of the results of our actions. We buy clothes that are made in sweat shops by virtual slaves in poor parts of the world. We create mountains of waste. We demand cheap food, mindless of the fact that it totally lacks taste and is produced using chemicals that poison the land.
The consumption culture makes us unaware of the effect of our own behavior. Our main problem is not that we don't know what to do about it. It is gathering the desire to do it.
【1】According to the author, which one belongs to the real economy?
A.The Dow Jones Index. B.Increases in interest rates.

A.people are benefiting from a well﹣off society
B.the future generation is a big concern for most people
C.the majority of people are optimistic about the future
D.people still feel much pressure despite labor-saving devices
【3】What is true about economic expansion?
A.It guarantees a better life for us. B.It may lead to some social problems.
C.It will stop the circulation of money. D.It has only brought desirable effects.
【4】The author writes the passage mainly to .
A.call on us to change our behavior B.suggest a solution for over-consumption
C.make a distinction between two economies D.inform us of the effects of economic expansion
29、 A study has found that middle-aged and older adults who live in greener neighborhoods have a decreased risk of developing metabolic syndrome (新陈代谢综合征) such as obesity(肥胖), hypertension(高血压)and high blood sugar.
The study, published in Environmental Pollution, was organized by the Barcelona Institute (研究所) for Global Health (ISGlobal). It differed from previous studies on the health benefits of green spaces in that it examined all of the symptoms (症状) of metabolic syndrome together collectively rather than as individual elements. Having metabolic syndrome increases a person's risk of heart disease, strokes and type 2 diabetes, according to the National Heart, Lung, and blood Institute.
The study from ISGlobal examined data from clinical examinations of over 6,000 British adults who were between 45 and 69 years old when the study began. The data was derived from four examinations participants who went through between 1997 and 2013 that included blood analyses, blood pressure and measurement of weight. “These findings suggest that long-term exposure to green spaces can play an important role in preventing metabolic syndrome as a whole.” according to a press release published by ISGlobal.
The correlation between nearness to green spaces and better health could be associated with the expanded opportunities for physical recreation and lower exposure to air pollution, according to Carmen De Keijzer, ISGlobal researcher and principal author of the study.
Female subjects were more likely than males to show the study's connection between living in greener and healthier neighborhoods and having fewer metabolic symptoms. “Women tend to spend more time in their residential (住宅的) neighborhood, which could explain this gender difference.” Carmen said. “We need greener cities if we want healthier cities.” She added.
【1】What do we know about the study from the first two paragraphs?
A.Symptoms were examined one by one. B.Several institutes took part in the study together.
C.Young people were not included in the study. D.It was the first study on health benefits.
【2】Why do women have fewer metabolic symptoms?
A.Because they have a different gender. B.Because they stay more where they live.
C.Because they live in greener cities. D.Because they live in healthier cities.
【3】What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Living in Greener and Healthier Cities.
B.Women Having Fewer Metabolic Symptoms.
C.Metabolic Syndrome Increasing Heart Disease.
D.Greener Neighborhoods, Fewer Metabolic Symptoms.
