When people talk about smart work and hard work, they usually wonder which one is more important. In fact,   smart work is more important. But working smartly is very hard. This is not a wordplay. It is not easy to be smart.

    What is "smartness"?

People are smart when they can find out a way to bring more results with less effort(努力).If you can achieve the same results without putting in a lot of work, you are smart. The person pushing the vehicle is smart, because he is using the knowledge and wisdom(智慧), and the hard work of some other people.

    How can we work smartly?

Creating that wheel isn't easy.It needs a great thinker, followed by an engineer's hard work.It then needs a handy man.Only then does it become easier to push the material using the machine. So, smart work is not easy at all.

Besides, being smart takes a lot of effort.People need to read more, keep learning new things, try to learn from others' experiences and sharpen their thinking skills. They need to predict the results before putting any effort in any direction, and being able to manipulate the given resources(资源) to meet their needs.

Human beings are smart. The human history shows our smartness. We don't need to go hunting for our food any more, because we were smart enough to find out that farming could bring much more food with much less effort. We then developed modern tools for farming.

Humans also invented the Internet, the wheel, clothes, the smart phones—all the tools that help us to work smartly. All of this is hard, but that hard work makes us smart.Because of smartness, we are much better off today in terms of happiness and richness.

So remember: Work hard to become a smart person.

【1】Which of the following is the example of smartness?

  • 22、   It’s late at night. A car stops in the middle of a forest. After dropping off their three teenagers, the parents say “good luck” and drive away. The teenagers, totally lost, have to find their way back home by themselves.

It may sound crazy to you, but this is a tradition with a long history for Dutch parents called “dropping”. Dutch people believe that children should not depend too much on their parents and should learn how to solve problems through activities like “dropping”.

However, for many other parents around the world, their top worry is their children’s safety. After all, why should they put their children at risk when there are many other ways to develop their independence?

People have many different opinions about parenting (育儿). All parents want their children to be happy, healthy and successful. In China, for example, many parents spend much money on summer vacation activities for their children. They want their children to enjoy their vacation as much as possible.

But some parents try too hard and become “helicopter ( ) parents”—just the opposite of “dropping”. They worry too much about their children and pay attention to everything they do—like helicopters flying over their children. In their eyes, children need to be protected all the time.

But this might not be a good parenting style either, according to American parenting expert Kenneth Ginsburg. As Ginsburg writes, parents should keep a balance (平衡) by “making sure their children don’t crash (碰撞) against the rocks, but allowing them to ride the waves (波浪).”

1For Dutch people, “dropping” can help children .

A.learn how to solve problems B.find their homes in forests

C.depend on their parents D.enjoy a summer vacation

2Many other parents around the world worried the most about  .

    A.good luck B.safety C.grades D.success

3Which one of the following pictures can best show “helicopter parents”?

    A.A B.B C.C D.D

4According to Kenneth Ginsburg, parents should   .

A.find a balance between keeping safe and letting go

B.depend a lot on their children in the future

C.let their children take risks all the time

    D.watch their children doing everything

  • 23、Jodie’s Daddy Is a Garbageman(垃圾清理工)

Mr Swales wanted to find out what his students’ parents did. He had just called Jodie when some girls burst out laughing. Shirley shouted, “Jodie’s daddy is a garbageman!”

Everybody in the class laughed out loud, except Jodie. She felt her face turn red.

“Silence!” Mr Swales said, “Being a garbagemen is a difficult and useful job. We should all be grateful to Jodie’s father.”

Jodie’s father came to walk her home from school as usual, but she didn’t run up to him the way she always did. When they got back home, Jodie went to her room and cried for a long time.

Her father came into her room, “What happened, Jodie? Why are you so sad?”

Jodie told her father what had happened and looked at him. He didn’t seem angry or hurt. “Well,” he said, “they are right. Being a garbageman is a dirty job. Tomorrow’s Saturday. Come to work with me, Jodie.”

The place really smelt too bad. Jodie wrinkled her nose. “Don’t worry, kid. In five minutes you won’t smell a thing.” said her father.

Everybody there was working hard, and they seemed to have a good time. Jodie’s father handed her a pair of gloves and told her to get the little plastic bags and throw them into the truck.

It was fun, but also hard work. Jodie’s arms soon got tired. At last, no more garbage was left and Jodie felt very happy.

“Garbage is disgusting, but when we clear it away, everything’s nice and clean. You can make yourself happy only by making other happy. That’s why I like being a garbageman so much.”

Jodie gave her dirty, smelly garbageman daddy a big kiss(吻). She said, “When I grow up, I will be a garbage-girl!”

Now whenever someone asks Jodie what her daddy does, she says, “He’s a garbageman! Everybody makes garbage, but my daddy takes it away!”
