四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Lots of people are afraid of speaking in public. According to a study, there are 3 of every 4 people having such a problem. The conclusion is a bit surprising and worrying, as most jobs require some speaking ability. The following will help you to make a speech better.

Write note cards. Write main ideas on your cards. You needn’t write details. Just put in some fun facts, questions, and other activities on the cards to share with the class. You needn’t look at your cards for a long time while speaking. Only have a quick look at the card for information instead of reading every last word if necessary.

Smile at your class. When it’s time to speak, a good old-fashioned smile is the best way to draw your class to your speech. Be happy, because you’re about to teach your class something they don’t know before. Studies have shown that smiles are infectious. That means once you smile, it’s hard for everyone else not to smile. So if you want your speech to go off well, smile. That will make everyone smile and maybe those smiles will make you actually smile.

Make eye contact. It’s so boring to listen to a speaker who looks at the floor or at note cards. Relax. Your class is made up of your friends and you talk to them all the time. Talk the same way now. Have a look at every person in the classroom at least once. That way, everyone will feel like you are communicating with them. Also, you will look like you know what you are talking about.

Use hand motions. Move your hands as you talk, use them to express your key points and keep the class interested. It will also lead your nervous energy into a better place.

1According to the passage, ________ of people are afraid of speaking in public.

    A.25% B.50% C.100%. D.75%

2The sentence “smiles are infectious” means “________”.

A.smile is a kind of illness B.smiles keep people fit

C.your smile can make others warm and want to smile too D.it’s hard to make others smile

3Which is the right picture to the last paragraph?

    A. B. C. D.

4The passage mainly talks about ________.

A.a boy’s speech in class B.how to write note cards

C.the fear of public speaking D.how to make a speech better

  • 25、   “Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell.”

This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown person who lived in Rome in 53 AD wrote it.

We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives. But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?

Picture this. You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How happy do you feel?

Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave up feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps because they live simpler lives.

One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10 and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phones.

The grandmother, Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.” The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a fashionable, beer-drinking granny, to one who cooked things.

【1】In the passage, the writer describes a picture to show that new inventions ________ .

    A.have speeded up our lives

B.have improve the quality of our lives

C.may make people feel very happy

    D.may bring people some trouble

【2】According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A.People who live far away from noisy cities often seem to be happier.

B.The family had some changes when they lived in a 1940s house.

C.An unknown Roman was sure that the quality of life would get better.

D.With the improvement of our lives, we often feel stressed and tired.

    【3】The passage is mainly about ________ .

    A.problems with technology

    B.the importance of technology

    C.changes happening to technology

D.improvements of our lives with technology

  • 27、TV was one of the greatest inventions in the 20th century.  Nowadays, nearly every household has at least one TV set.

Television came into being based on the inventions and discoveries of many scientists. On April 7,1927,the first public television programme was broadcast in the USA. The signals were received on a very small screen. It was only about the size of a business card. The pictures were reddish and not clear.

In the 1930s, bigger screens appeared with black-and-white pictures. However,a snowy picture was the best many TV viewers could hope for. Often,  they could only get one station, and only when the weather conditions were good.

When World War (1939-1945)began,the development of TV stopped.  There were a very small number of TV sets in the hands of the public. By 1945,there were fewer than 7,000 working TV sets in the USA. A TV set cost about half the price of a car at that time.

The period after World War is considered the final birth of television.  Families saved money during the war years, and wanted to buy a lot of things after the war.  TV sets were soon put onto the "must have" list. 1950-1959 was an exciting period for television. Colour televisions and remote controls came out during this time. By 1955,the cost of TV sets came down a lot. Instead of being equal to half the price of a car, they were now just equal to the cost of a new set of tires. That marks the beginning of the booming age of TV.

  • 29、Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage(选择最恰当的单词或词语完成短文)

The continuous presentation of frightening stories about global warming in the popular media makes us unnecessarily frightened. Even worse, it ________ our kids.

Al Gore famously described how a sea-level rise of 20 feet would almost completely flood

Florida, New York, Holland, and Shanghai, even though the United Nations says that such a thing will not even happen, estimating that sea levels will rise 20 times less than that.

When faced with these exaggerations (夸大), some of us say that they are for a good cause, and surely there is no harm done if the result is that we focus even more on tacking climate change.

This argument is astonishingly wrong. Such exaggerations do plenty of harm. Worrying excessively about global warming means that we worry less about other things, where we could do so much more good. We focus, ________, on global warming’s impact on malaria (疟疾)—which will put slightly more people at ________ in 100 years—instead of tacking the half a billion people suffering from malaria today with prevention and treatment policies that are much cheaper and dramatically more effective than carbon reduction would be.

Exaggeration also wears out the public’s ________ to cope with global warming. If the planet is certain to be destroyed owing to global warming, people wonder, why do anything? A record 54% of American voters now believe the news media make global warming appear worse than it really is. A majority of people now believe –incorrectly – that global warming is not even caused by humans.

But the ________ cost of exaggeration, I believe, is the unnecessary alarm that it causes – particularly among children. An article in The Washington Post cited nine-year-old Alyssa, who cries about the possibility of mass animal extinction from global warming.

The newspaper also reported that parents are taking over effective outlets for their 8-year-olds’ concern with dying polar bears. They might be better off educating them and letting them know that,

related to common belief, the global polar bear population has doubled over the past half-century, to about 22,000. ________ the possible disappearing of summer Arctic ice, polar bears will not become extinct.
