    Painful for Your Ears

Do you often listen to music at loud volumes? You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The human ear has three different parts. The outer ear is the part you can see. The middle ear and inner ear are inside your head. That doesn't mean those parts can't be hurt. They can be harmed by loud noises. Over one billion young people are at risk of hearing loss due to listening to loud noise for long periods of time, said WHO. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes can harm your hearing.

Sounds are measured in decibels (dB分贝). A whisper is 30 dB. A friend talking is about 60 dB. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB. The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 dB for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes.

Loud noise is harmful to the inner ear. Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells (听毛细胞) in our inner ears. These cells detect (探测) sounds. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss.

Some people might think that their music isn't all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.

What can be done to protect your hearing? Use noise-canceling (降噪) headphones. These headphones get rid of background noise. You don't need to turn up the volume as much. Keep your device volume at 50 to 60 percent. Limit daily use of headphones. Listen to sound on your mobile devices for a maximum of one hour per day.

The less loud noise you hear, the better!

1Listening to loud music causes hearing problems because_______.

A.it can stop our ears from resting

B.it puts our brains under great pressure

C.it can cause hair cells in the inner ear to die

D.it makes people get used to listening to loud sounds

2From paragraph 5, we can know_______.

A.people love to listen to loud music

B.people don't always know how loud their music is

C.it's great to listen to music on the subway

D.it's reasonable to listen to loud music in some places

3The writer probably agrees that _______.

A.people have to wear headphones while walking on a busy road

B.listening to music on TV is better for hearing than on mobile devices

C.young people should set a time limit of listening to music at loud volumes

D.wearing noise-canceling headphones can stop the outer ears being harmed

  • 22、I felt very sad because I was not able to get the ticket to the film Hero last Friday. I learned from the newspaper that tickets could be bought at the cinema box office in Richland Hills any day between 10:00 a. m. and 4:00 p. m. Since I work from 9:00 a. m. to 5:30 p. m. , the only time I could go to the cinema is during my 45 minutes’ lunchtime. It is a pity that the cinema is on the other side of the town and the bus service between my company and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes.

Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for 15 minutes waiting for a bus. By the time I saw one come round the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip, so I had to go back. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday. On Thursday my luck changed. I got on a bus right away and arrived at the cinema in twenty minutes. But when I got there, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man said he had been waiting in line for over an hour. I found I would not have enough time to wait in line. I caught the next bus and went back across the town.

By Friday I understood my only hope was to make the trip by car. It was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it to see the film. The trip by car only took 10 minutes, but it felt like an hour to me. When I reached the cinema, I was delighted to see that nobody was waiting in line. But I quickly found out that it was because they had already sold out all the tickets.

【1】It seemed that the writer of the story works as a ____.

    A.worker

    B.doctor

    C.farmer

    D.clerk

【2】The writer tried to go to the cinema every day, but really got there ____.

    A.five times

    B.twice

    C.four times

    D.three times

【3】We can infer from the underlined sentence that the writer was ____.

    A.worried

    B.sorry

    C.surprised

    D.pleased

【4】In the end the writer got ____ ticket(s).

    A.one

    B.two

    C.three

    D.no

【5】When the writer reached the cinema, he was delighted because ____.

A.he understood his only hope was to make the trip by car

B.it was expensive, but he felt it would be worth it to see the film

C.he saw that nobody was waiting in line

D.the trip by car only took 10 minutes

  • 23、   When you run into(撞上)someone on the bus, will you say “Sorry”? When you get help from others, will you say “Thanks”? You will if you are polite.

We learned this in primary school(小学), but students seem to be less and less polite as they grow up. A new survey in Guangzhou shows middle school students aren’t as polite as primary school students. At middle schools, students start to swear(说脏话)and laugh at their classmates. Some students don’t listen to others.

Wu Lin, 13, from Fujian, learned to swear in middle school. “More than 10 of 22 boys in my class often swear,” Wu said. “We just swear for fun most of the time. But later, I understood that it was bad for me. So I stopped.”

Li Fangfang, 13, from Beijing, knows that laughing at others can really hurt. “Once, a classmate put up her hand to answer a question. But she didn’t give the right answer. Then some classmates laughed at her,” Li says. “From that day on, she never puts up her hand. Those laughing kids hurt her a lot.

“Impoliteness(无礼)comes from students’ growing pains(成长的烦恼),” says Wang Yamin, a teacher of English at Xiamen University of Technology. “Some middle school students become impolite because their classmates or parents do things in that way. They think it’s cool and funny. But our people are famous for politeness. Every student should speak and do things politely to respect(尊重)others and let others respect you.”
