六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   What can be both red or green, round or sharp, big or small, and more importantly, loved or hated by someone? Yes, the answer is chilies. Humans eat chilies even though they sometimes cause us discomfort.

About 600 million of Chinese, almost half of the national population, are chili eaters. However, did you know that this spicy(辣的)vegetable could put you in danger? A 34-year-old US man recently ended up in hospital after eating a Carolina Reaper, the spiciest chili people have known so far. After taking just a single bite of one, the man suffered from serious headaches in the following days, reported BBC News.

It is a fact that rating spicy food causes stomachache and headache. But if chilies ae truly harmful, why do people like to eat this vegetable? So what makes people love chilies so much? The secret lies in a natural chemical reaction within human bodies. After eating chilies, the human body reacts to some natural chemicals that produce "a sense of happiness", noted BBC News.

What's more, chilies do good to people in another way. Scientists found that the death rate of those who eat spicy food once or twice a week is 10 percent lower than those who eat it less than once a week. The death rate is 14 percent lower for those who eat spicy food six to seven times a week. This encourages people to eat more spicy food to improve health and bring less death risk at an early age. So, don't worry if you love spicy food. It seems that chilies are actually good for us.

  • 22、You may have noticed that the world’s population is not evenly distributed (分布) around our planet. There are more countries where people seem to be living nearly on top of each other because conditions are overcrowded . Then there are others where it seems that hardly anybody lives. What influences this unequal distribution of people ? There are specific advantages and disadvantages of living in a certain area.

The two main factors (因素) that influence people’s choice of location are climate and resources. Climate is the usual weather conditions in a region. Areas that have bad weather are generally less ideal as places to live in . When it comes to climates, warm conditions and a normal amount of rainfall are advantages that attract people.

Natural resources are tings that we get from nature that help us survive. Each region offers different resources, and therefore attracts different groups of people. People who enjoy the beach can make their living by catching and selling the ocean’s many fish and other sea creature. Those who prefer farming can take advantage of rich soil in valleys near rivers. • 23、   The novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP, 新型冠状病毒肺炎) outbreak in China was caused by a new coronavirus that we have never seen before. It was first found in the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, where a variety of wild animals were on sale. People who sold and bought animals illegally were the first to be infected.

Scientists have found that the virus likely came from bats and was then spread to humans from pangolins (穿山甲). According to Live Science, bats can carry and spread more than 60 viruses that can infect humans. They include the world’s deadliest viruses, such as Ebola and SARS. But bats have special immune systems that allow them to live with viruses without getting sick. Other wild animals like snakes and hedgehogs (刺猬) are also hosts of many viruses.

There have been calls for people to stop eating wild animals. However, the danger is not just in eating them, but also in touching them. People can get infected if they come into contact with the body fluids (体液) of wild animals. People who hunt, kill, sell or eat these animals run the risk of becoming infected.

Keeping wild animals as pets or selling parts of their bodies as animal products also create risks for humans. It is highly possible to come into contact with the body fluids of wild animals in this way.

“Trade and consumption of wild animals of all kinds should be banned,” Zeng Guang, chief epidemiologist (流行病学家) at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told China Daily. “Otherwise people will suffer.”

1According to scientists, humans might get infected with COVID-19 from________.

2According to the story, what lesson should humans learn?

A.Research more about wild animals. B.Exercise regularly to stay healthy.

C.Stop keeping animals as pets. D.Don’t buy or eat wild animals.
