21、 I always have these questions in my mind-how does anxiety influence how we think? What classroom environments are most helpful to learning? Most experts agree that having the right team of people to come up with ideas to argue for plays an important role to find out the answers.
However, how do we know who the right people are when making a team? From the classroom and the workplace, to the laboratory and the playing field, research shows that diverse groups of people often make better decisions.
Professor Scott Page believes different ways of thinking from a particular group produces something additional. When people with their own "tools" come together to work on difficult tasks, the results are powerful.
Groups with different genders(性别) also hold merit here. Christine Lagarde said that better decisions are made when women and men come together at the table, creating what she calls a "larger horizon". She mentioned that while women make up only 2% of bank CEOs worldwide, banks who count women among the top leadership are likely to have better economic outcomes( 结果).
In 2010, researchers examined the performance of about 700 people (both men and women), working in groups of two to five, solving both simple and difficult tasks. They discovered that the best predictor of performance wasn't the average intelligence of group members. Instead it was a collective measure of intelligence, which had much to do with the number of women in the group. As women are good at reading others' faces and making the best of different opinions, they help to bring out a more productive outcome.
Finally, it turns out that the size of the group matters, too. Smaller groups can actually be more creative. A new study from University of Chicago found that while bigger teams are important for advancing science, smaller groups help "break it down"-a key part of creativity.
In today's workforce, people come together to cooperate on tough tasks, being encouraged to look to each other. Brainstorming with others in small, diverse groups helps ideas to shine in our mind and, more often than not, leads to the solution. It's a research-driven model for how to develop our collective problem-solving abilities by having the right teams of people producing good ideas worth fighting for.
【1】The underlined word "diverse groups" in Paragraph 2 probably means "______".
A.groups in which people have a close relation
B.groups with people who like thinking and sharing
C.groups in which people are different from each other
D.groups with people who are good at solving problems
【2】What can we learn from the research in 2010?
A.Groups with both genders make teamwork more fruitful.
B.Women are better at reading and accepting others' minds.
C.The average intelligence of group members really matters.
D.Banks should depend more on women in decision-making.
【3】What does the writer mainly want to show us?
A.Women in a group influence the collective intelligence.
B.Different groups of people usually produce different ideas.
C.Diverse teams can be expected to work out better outcomes.
D.The size of the group is important in dealing with problems.
22、
There were many plants in a forest. When spring came, a pine tree saw a red rose nearby and said, “What a beautiful flower! I wish I were that lovely.”
The rose proudly said, “It seems that I am the most beautiful flower in this forest.” Then the rose looked at a cactus(仙人掌) and said, “Look at that ugly plant full of thorns(刺)!”
“What a proud flower!” thought the tree.
As the days passed, the red rose often looked at the cactus and said bad words about it, like “This plant is useless. How sorry I am to be his neighbor!”
The cactus never got angry and even tried to advise the rose, saying, “Any form of life couldn’t be created without a purpose.”
Spring passed, and the weather became very hot. As there was no rain, the red rose began to wilt(枯萎).
One day the rose saw birds put their beaks (喙) into the cactus and then fly away. The red rose asked the pine tree what the birds were doing. The pine tree explained that the birds were getting water from the cactus.
“The cactus has water?” asked the rose.
“Yes, you can also drink some from it. The birds can bring water to you if you ask the cactus for help.”
The red rose felt too ashamed to ask for water from the cactus. But finally it did ask for help. The cactus kindly agreed.
The rose learned a lesson that never judged (评价) anyone by their appearance again.

23、These days, more and more students in the UK are taking a “gap year” between their graduation(毕业)from high school and their university(大学)studies. This means that they take a year off, to do something else, before they start their studies.
For most students, spending time in foreign countries is the favourite activity-and Australia is the favourite place to go.
Many parents, teachers and business people agree that travelling can teach important values(价值). Just like the 20-year-old young man William said, “During the gap year, I learnt to solve different problems all by myself and began to realize the importance of getting along with people of different cultures.”
There are many companies around the world that welcome these students on their projects-helping people in poorer countries, or even in your home country. Although(尽管)you don’t get paid for your work, this kind of work can teach important skills-decision making and finding ways to problems, for example-that will help a student in a job one day.
Finally, the knowledge and experience you get will one day be very useful in an area you hope to study or work in.
If several university graduates(毕业生)are making applications for the same job, gap year work experience allows you to say, “I’ve already had some experience of this kind of work.” And that can help you get the job!

24、An old tree tell you…
Dear human beings,
I hesitated a lot before writing this letter. All I want to do is to ask you to have a look at your life. But I’m not sure whether or not you’ll pay attention to me.
I’m a pretty old tree. I’m eighty years old, so I’ve seen much of the world. We’ve lived on Earth with you for millions of years. Each day we release oxygen and remove harmful gas so that
you have pure air, we cool the air so that you don’t have to run your air-conditioners all the time, we help prevent the Earths soil from being washed away, and above all, we give all kinds of fruits, nuts, beans, as well as wood to you.
But we are in great danger now because of you. You are, in fact, destroying us at a terrible speed. You are burning and cutting down millions of us each year, but you’re not planting enough. For every tree being planted today, 30 trees are being cut down. What would you do if all of us died? Perhaps you would die, too. Without us, you wouldn’t get the ingredients (成分) for some of your important medicines, you wouldn’t have enough materials for buildings, furniture, paper products, and your cities would look ugly. Moreover, air pollution and noise pollution would become more and more serious, and your life would turn nasty…
Well, the list could go on and on forever, but I think I should stop. The best thing for you to do now is to stop your bad practice. Please stop destroying us and start protecting the environment, because we are the best fighters against pollution and we are your best friends!
I wish the best for you, and good luck!
Your friend,
An old tree
