24、 A computer program that could help catch and even translate messages from aliens in outer space has been developed by a British scientist.
If aliens are discovered one day, scientists fear their language may make it impossible to understand them. But John Elliott of Leeds Metropolitan University in Britain has come up with a program that can figure out the structure(结构)of their language. He thinks that’s the first step in understanding what they are saying.
Dr Elliott’s program would compare an alien language to a database ( 数据库) of 60 different languages in the world to look for a similar structure. He believes that even an alien language will have its own structure. “Language has to be structured in a certain way, or it will be hard to use,” he told New Scientist magazine.
Research had shown that it is possible to know if a signal(信号)carries a language rather than a picture or music.Dr Elliott has gone a step further by finding a way to pick out what might be words and sentences. Because languages have different word orders, Dr Elliott has set up a library of the sentence structures of 60 human languages.
If a message is received from outer space, it could be compared against this database. Scientists would then be able to see if it’s similar to any human language, or a mix of the languages.
However, Dr Elliott also said that in order to translate what the aliens are actually saying, it may still be necessary to have a “code(密码)book”.
【1】Why did Dr Elliott come up with the program?
A.To learn more about outer space.
B.To develop a new language.
C.To help translate messages from aliens.
D.To compare an alien language to human languages.
【2】According to Dr Elliott’s opinion, what’s the first step of understanding an alien language?
A.Coming up with a program.
B.Knowing its structure.
C.Understanding aliens.
D.Discovering aliens.
【3】What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A.Some necessary conditions for making the program work.
B.Dr Elliott’s findings about alien languages.
C.Three important functions of the program.
D.The number of sentence structures of human languages.
【4】How does the program work when it receives a message from aliens?
A.Mix the message with 60 human languages.
B.Translate the message and send it to the database.
C.Pick out the sentence structure and translate it.
D.Compare the message to the database of 60 human languages.
【5】What can we infer from the passage?
A.Not all languages have their own structures.
B.To translate alien languages, there is much work to do.
C.The structure of alien languages is similar to that of human languages.
D.Alien languages are signals carrying pictures and music.

26、 They hang from trees. They float in rivers and oceans. They are piled up in landfills(垃圾填埋场). Our frequent use of plastic products has, for many years, been a leading cause of serious environmental problems in the world. Last month, China drew up new guidelines(指导方针) aiming to bring plastic pollution under control across the country in five years’ time.
According to the new guidelines, the ban(禁令) on the use of non-biodegradable(不可生物降解的) plastic bags will have been applied to cities including Beijing and Shanghai by the end of this year. Other sources of plastic garbage will have been banned in these cities by the end of 2022. And that rule will have extended nationwide by late 2025.
Fortunately, China will not start from zero. Late last year, the country announced a national standard for biodegradable plastic shopping bags. It is technologically prepared for their production. Some regions have gained valuable experience that others can learn from. For example, Jilin province is leading the way by providing eco-friendly(环保的) shopping bags in some local supermarkets.
Given the size of China’s consumer market, one main obstacle(障碍) is the large number of plastic items that are being used by restaurants and e-commerce(电子商务) platforms. It’s estimated that nearly 25 billion plastic bags were used for deliveries in 2018. Most of them were rarely reused.
However, most Chinese people welcomed the government’s effort to reduce the use of plastics. “Beijing is thinking about the problem seriously,” said Tang Damin, a member of Greenpeace East Asia in Beijing. He added that the policy could be far more effective(有效) by using incentives(激励) such as a deposit(押金) return program on plastic products.
【1】What does the writer want to tell us?
A.China has invented biodegradable plastic shopping bags.
B.Plastic pollution becomes more and more serious in China.
C.Greenpeace East Asia in Beijing worries about the plastic pollution.
D.China has drawn up new guidelines to reduce plastic pollution in five years.
【2】According to the time line of the new guidelines, .
A.the rules will have extended nationwide by late 2025
B.plastic garbage will have been banned in Shanghai by the end of 2020
C.plastic bags won’t be allowed to be used in Beijing by the end of 2022
D.a deposit return program on plastic products will be put into practicing in 2023
【3】What is the biggest challenge to follow the guidelines?
A.Most Chinese people aren’t used to using paper bags.
B.It’s hard to make effective policy to solve the problem.
C.Many supermarkets are still providing customers with plastic bags.
D.Restaurants and e-commerce platforms need large number of plastic items.
【4】What does Tang Damin think of the new policy?
A.The new guidelines are not much useful.
B.People should be encouraged to follow the policy.
C.The new policy can help a lot to develop Greenpeace.
D.Beijing is thinking about the plastic pollution seriously.
【5】After reading the passage, we can infer that .
A.people will order more take-out food
B.plastic bags will be widely reused in the world
C.biodegradable plastic shopping bags will become popular
D.there will be more people using paper products in the future
27、阅读下面四篇材料,然后从A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
After giving a talk at a high school, I was asked to pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me. I was told it would mean a great deal to him, so I agreed.
During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He
had muscular dystrophy (肌肉萎缩症). When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to five, and then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles and going for my dreams.
I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, “Why me?” He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weights with me. When we had finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I had won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.”
Last summer I received a letter from Matthew’s parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. They wanted me to have a letter he had written to me a few days before:
Dear Dick,
My mum said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. I also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that I don’t have long to live any more, but I still smile as much as I can. I told you someday that I would go to the Olympics and win a gold medal, but I know now I will never get to do that. However, I know I’m a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you. Thank you for loving me.
Your friend,
Matthew
