21、I left home to support my sister in her efforts to present a music festival. She lives on the other side of the world, and I went to visit her,not wanting to leave and feeling like I was leaving home against my will. However,I wanted to show her my support because she is my only sister.
So I boarded the plane in mid-August,and hated the long flight.I arrived, tired and hungry.I had left my husband of 2 years, alone,in our old New Orleans house.
I was all set and ready to perform for my sister for the music festival on Sunday morning when I received a call from Chicago. The hurricane was predicted to hit our city, and many people had already evacuated, but my husband chose to stay behind. He could not get a call to me on the other side of the world, but he could call his cousin in Chicago. He gave his cousin a message for me,that he would be just fine, and not to worry.
As the day wore on,I finally took the stage in front of hundreds of Europeans, and I realized, thanks to CNN,that New Orleans was under water.
I performed, hoping that my husband would survive. And I performed perfectly. The audience stood and applauded.I left the stage and went straight to the TV.I saw the street sign near my home,of Humanity Street, but nothing below it,except water.
In the days that followed,I found out that my house,my car,my clothes,my furniture, everything that I'd left behind was gone...but not my husband. He survived by riding on the rear bumper(后保险杆)of a VW bus, holding on to the overhead luggage rack,in the pouring rain, down the highway from New Orleans,half-way to Baton Rouge. The rest of the journey was a long walk, but he survived.
By the first week of September,I flew back to the Baton Rouge airport, and hugged my husband.Since then, our relationship has grown deeper;we have completely rebuilt our house, bought a new car, bought new furniture and new clothes and joined an inspirational,spirit-filled community.

22、You don’t need to be an expert to recognize luna moths (蚕蛾). They have hairy white bodies, red legs and huge green wings that stretch up to 4.5 inches across. And at the end of their wings are a pair of long tails that have attracted scientists for centuries.
Some of them theorized that it was possible that female moths judged the health and quality of a male by the size of his tails. But it turned out that female moths were not choosy at all. They just mate with the first males they could find. Others believed that the tails could increase luna moths’ size to make them harder for the bats-the main enemy of luna moths—to handle. But the theory proved wrong in 1903 when a scientist named Archibald Weeks put bats against a bigger species of moths that lacked tails. He found that the bats killed 66% of their targets. Luna moths, despite being smaller, were harder to catch. “Clearly, their tails provided an anti-bat advantage,” Weeks observed. “I think they were used to direct bats away from the moths’ body.”
He was roughly right. More than a century later, Jesse Barber from Boise State University put luna moths against bats in a dark room and filmed the hunting. Under normal circumstances, the bats only managed to catch 35% of the luna moths. But if Barber cut off their tails beforehand, the bats caught 81% of them. That was not because the moths became worse fliers—in fact, cutting the troublesome tails seemed to have improved their flying abilities.
Barber explained that bats were not visual hunters. They found their food with a special sound. To be protected from bats, luna moths needed something that made confusing sounds. That was what the luna moths’ tails did: As they flew, they waved behind them and produced sounds that were similar to their wing beats. To bats, they either sounded like a huge part of their target, or like an entirely different target. As a result, they aimed about half their attacks at the tails.

23、Kindergarten represents a crucial environment in which children develop school-related skills and patterns of engagement. They form the basis for the development of later competence which is important for academic success. As for later academic skills, kindergarten achievements have been found to have great predictive value.
Given the long-lasting effects that kindergarten experiences have on later schooling, it is important to understand the factors associated with children's learning and motivation during this time. The quality of teacher-student interaction has been found to be important in terms of many different academic and socio-emotional outcomes. However, much of the previous work in the field has focused on children in later grades in elementary school and has been conducted in the United States. Fewer studies have been conducted in other educational environments and in kindergarten specifically.
Some researchers investigated bidirectional links between the quality of teacher-child relationships and children’s interest and pre-academic skills in literacy and math in Finland. Participants were 461 Finnish kindergarteners (6-year-olds) and 48 teachers.
The results indicated that teacher-perceived(教师感知的)conflicts predicted children’s lower pre-academic skills in both literacy and math. It is possible that when children experience conflicts with teachers, the negative emotions attached to these conflicts are harmful to children’s engagement in learning and curtail their interest in academic tasks. It’s also possible that children experiencing conflicts are missing out on time for learning literacy and math, either because they become separated from instructional activities or because teachers have to spend more instructional time on behavioral management.
The findings highlight the importance of kindergarten teachers being aware of how their relationships with children can influence children’s later schooling. Therefore, it would be important to develop pre-service and in-service programs and interventions to help teachers. Teacher education programs may also benefit teachers not only in academic content and peda-gogical (教育学的)practices but also in strategies used to build supportive relationships with children.
【1】What do we learn about kindergarten achievements?
A.They’re closely related to kids’ personalities.
B.They greatly affect kids’ later academic skills.
C.They largely depend on the teachers' competence.
D.They’re mainly about kids’ problem-solving abilities.
【2】From Paragraph 2, we know that the quality of teacher-student interaction in kindergarten
A.has drawn little attention from researchers

C.The ways of reducing teacher-student conflicts in kindergarten.
D.The influence of teacher-student interaction in kindergarten on kids.
24、Biologists believe that love is fundamentally a biological rather than a cultural construct, because the capacity for love is found in all human cultures and similar behavior is found in some other animals. In humans the purpose of all the desire is to focus attention on the raising of offspring. Children demand an unusual amount of parenting, and two parents are better than one. Love is a signal that both partners are committed, and makes it more likely that this commitment will continue as long as necessary for children to reach independence. But what does science have to say about the notion of love at first sight?
In recent years the ability to watch the brain in action has offered a wealth of insight into the mechanics of love. Researchers have shown that when a person falls in love, a dozen different part of brain work together to release chemicals that trigger feelings of euphoria, bonding and excitement. It has also been shown that the unconditional love between a mother and a child is associated with activity in different regions of the brain from those associated with pair-bonding love.
Passionate love is rooted in the reward circuitry of the brain—the same area that is active when humans feel a rush from cocaine. In fact, the desire, motivations and withdrawals involved in love have a great deal in common with addiction. Its most intense forms tend to be associated with the early stages of a relationship, which then give way to a calmer attachment form of love one feels with a long term partner.
What all this means is that one special person can become chemically rewarding to the brain of another. Love at first sight, then, is only possible if the mechanism for generating long-term attachment can be triggered quickly. There are signs that it can be. One line of evidence is that people are able to decide within a second how attractive they find another person. This decision appears to be related to facial attractiveness, although men may favor women with waist-to-hip ratio of 0.7, no matter what their overall weight is. (This ratio may indicate a woman’s reproductive health.)
Another piece of evidence comes from work by a psychologist at Ben-Gurion University, who found in a survey that a small percentage (11%) of people in long-term relationships said that they began with love at first sight. In other words, in some couples the initial favorable impressions of attractiveness triggered love which sustained a lengthy bond. It is also clear that some couples need to form their bonds over a longer period, and popular culture tells many tales of friends who become lovers.
One might also assume that if a person is looking for a partner with traits that cannot be quantified instantly, such as compassion, intellect or a good sense of humor, then it would be hard to form a relationship on the basis of love at first sight. Those more concerned with visual appearances, though, might find this easier. So it appears that love at first sight exists, but is not a very common basis for long-term relationships.
