  • 26、For centuries, dolphins have got our admiration, and it is easy to see why. They are beautiful, cute and smart sea animals. Dolphins are not fish, but warm-blooded animals. They live in groups, and speak to each other in their own language. In this way, they are like other animals, such as bees and birds. But dolphins are very different from almost all land animals. It is said that dolphins are the world’s second brightest creatures after humans and have many brain features related to intelligence. Their brain is nearly the same size as our own, and they live a long time at least twenty or thirty years.

Like some animals, dolphins use sound to help them find their way around. They also make these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food. We now know they do not use their ears to receive these sounds, but the lower part of the mouth, called the jaw.

Strangely, dolphins seem to like man, and for thousands of years there have been stories about the dolphin and its friendship with people.

There is a story about sailors in the 19th century. In a dangerous part of the sea off the coast of New Zealand, they learnt to look for a dolphin called Jack. From 1871 to 1903, Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way. Then in 1903 a passenger on a boat called The Penguin shot and wounded Jack. He recovered and for nine years more continued to guide all ships through the area-except for The Penguin.

Today, some people continue to kill dolphins, but many countries of the world now protect them and in these places it is against the law to kill them.

1Dolphins are different from many other animals because they _____.

    A. live in groups

    B. have large brains

    C. are warm-blooded

    D. have their own language

2Which of the following does the dolphin use to help it find its way around?

    A. Its nose.   B. Its ears.   C. Its jaw.   D. Its eyes.

3Why did the sailors off the coast of New Zealand look for Jack?

    A. He was lonely and liked to be with people.

    B. They enjoyed playing with him.

    C. He was seriously wounded.

    D. They wanted his help.

4By telling the story of Jack, the writer wanted to show that _____.

    A. dolphins are friendly and clever

    B. people are cruel to animals

    C. Jack is different from other dolphins

    D. dolphins should be protected by law

  • 27、When you are choosing a major in the future, will you place a higher value on its future career or on its personal interest to you? Zhong Fangrong, a left-behind girl from Hunan province who scored 676 points in total on this year’s college entrance exam, preferred the latter as she applied to study archaeology (考古学) at Peking University.

However, there was a heated debate concerning whether she had made a wise decision. Some netizens argued that she wouldn’t have a promising future unless she chose a more popular major—for instance, finance, engineering, business, etc.—instead of archaeology. What’s more, considering the financial burden on her family, she had better think twice before making her final decision.

The girl later responded that she had been inspired to pursue archeology by Fan Jinshi, president of Dunhuang Academy, and that she had developed a passion for history and cultural relics (遗址). She also added that she cared little about fame and fortune.

Zhong has increased my confidence because of her attitude towards life. Firstly, she knows clearly what she is really interested in and is determined to devote herself to it. Secondly, Zhong has been able to stick to her pursuit despite the criticism from society.

Zhong’s pursuit reminds me of a lady who walks on a country road and lives in poetry—Li Ziqi. They both try their best to be who they want to be, which is rare and admirable nowadays.

Just ask yourself: Do you have the courage not to follow the pattern that the majority of people repeat? Actually, applying for an unpopular major may help you to avoid fierce competition. And the pursuit of a popular major is no guarantee for a brilliant future.

Following the example of Zhong, I will be more willing to follow my dreams in the years to come.

【1】Some netizens opposed Zhong’s choice because they thought ______.

    A.she preferred finance to archaeology

    B.she wouldn’t have a promising future

C.she placed value on her future career

D.she cared much about fame and fortune

【2】What made Zhong decide to major in archaeology?

A.Her courage to take an adventure.

    B.Her optimistic attitude towards life.

C.Her stubborn belief in popular majors.

D.Her love for history and cultural relics.

【3】What inspires the author to follow his or her dream in the future?

    A.Li Ziqi’s living in poetry.

    B.Netizens’ heated argument.

    C.Fan Jinshi’s encouragement.

    D.Zhong’s sticking to her pursuit.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.You Can Be Who You Want To Be

    B.Archaeology Is Becoming Popular

    C.A Left-behind Girl Scored 676 Points

D.A Heated Debate Arose Among Netizens

  • 28、There have been several incidents at concerts and other events in recent years where people died because of unsafe crowd conditions and stampedes(蜂拥). This may leave some people thinking there’s little you can do to survive a stampede. Indeed, it’s a frightening situation to be in and circumstances may make it impossible to escape. But crowd-safety experts say there are several strategies that could help you avoid a potentially fatal outcome.

The key to staying safe in a crowd begins as soon as you arrive at the location, says Randy I. Atlas, a safety consultant based in Fort Lauderdale. Namely, he advises people to take note of where the nearest exits are. It’s a piece of common-sense advice that Atlas applies not just at big events, but even when entering almost any room.

If there’s a sudden panic(恐慌) and crowds begin to push in a certain direction, your instinct(本能) may be to fight back and push the opposite way. But that could be a big mistake, Atlas warns. If you go against the flow, you increase your chances of getting tripped and knocked down. Another risk, according to experts: If you fight the crowd, you will tire yourself out quickly in a situation where you need all the energy you can gather.

Another potential way to handle the situation is to protect yourself and allow the crowd to move past you. Look for “a solid structure to stand behind such as a pillar, a wall, a car or even a lamppost” says Bart Whitaker, an event-management professional.

In many stampede events, people die from asphyxiation(窒息)—they are simply crushed to the point they can’t breathe. But a possible way to avoid this is to place your arms in front of you, almost in a boxer-like posture. That could give you some very valuable breathing room, which is a simple pose, but surprisingly effective and possibly life-saving.

On the whole, the best way is to stay away from the crowd and avoid coming along for the ride.

【1】What does the writer think of a stampede?

    A.No one can survive it.

    B.It’s nothing serious.

C.It can leave a place in ruins.

    D.It can become disastrous.

【2】What should we first do for safety in a crowd?

    A.Arriving early at the spot.

    B.Coming along for fun.

C.Knowing where to leave most quickly.

D.Pushing through the crowd to the middle.

【3】What does Alta advise people to do in case of a big crowd?

    A.Stop feeling panic.

    B.Go with the flow.

    C.Follow their instinct.

    D.Gather all their energy.

【4】How can people really avoid a stampede?

    A.Staying away from it.

    B.Standing with both hands raised.

C.Finding a hard thing for protection.

    D.Giving themselves some breathing room.

  • 29、Summer has finally arrived, which means kids are bound for the outdoors. It can be exciting for kids and parents to have a great opportunity to go swimming, picnicking or on adventures. This time of year is also a dangerous time of year as almost half of all injury-related deaths in children occur between May and August. Whether it be in the pool, on bike, out in the sun or in the backyard is always important. Here are some tips to keep the family safe over the summer.

    Water Safety

At this time of year, drowning deaths among children skyrocket(飞涨) compared to the rest of the year. Never leave your child alone in the water, even in shallow water. A child can drown in as little as one inch of water. Enroll your children in swimming lessons. Some swim schools offer class for children as young as 6 months.

    Sun Safety

We are fortunate enough to live in the Sunshine State, where sun shines year-round. But with all the time you and the kids will be spending outdoors this summer, it’s important to protect yourself. Make sure to use a widely-used sunscreen(防晒霜) that blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. Cotton clothing has an estimated SPF of only 6, so even if your kids are going out wearing T-shirts and shorts, make sure they are covered up.

    Bike Safety

Nothing says summer like a nice neighborhood bike ride. But bikes are not toys and can certainly cause injury. Don’t forget to always wear a helmet. Head injuries are reduced by 85 Percent when riders wear a helmet and other safety equipment like knee and wrist pads. It’s estimated that 75 percent of bicycle-related deaths could have been prevented with bicycle helmets. When riding on the street, make sure kids understand all riding hand signals, ride with the traffic flow and stay as far right as possible.

1Summer is called a dangerous time because children   .

    A. are easily injured

    B. enjoy staying in the sun

    C. want to learn swimming

    D. refuse to accept advice

2What can be learned from the passage?

    A. Kids only need to wear T-shirts and shorts.

    B. Bikes, like toys, seldom lead to injury.

    C. Some swim schools offer children class for free.

    D. Deaths from drowning increase suddenly in summer.
