Machines know your voice

Computers, smartphones, and other machines are the perfect servants. We usually “tell” them to do things by using a mouse or keyboard. But what if we could just talk to them and tell them what to do?

In the 1960s TV series Star Trek, spaceships could reply to human voice orders. In the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL 9, 000 is a computer that humans can talk to. It can play chess with humans and fix their spaceship.

This type of technology, which helps machines understand people speech and act as what people say, is known as voice recognition (识别). Today, voice recognition is widely used in people’s daily life. Siri and Alexa, the voice recognition software made by Apple and Amazon are two examples. You can ask them to do many things, from setting alarms and playing music to placing online grocery orders and turning on household devices.

One of the nice things about voice recognition is that it can be used when we’re on the go. When you’re driving a car or walking down the sidewalk, it is not convenient or even hazardous to pick up your smartphone and type on the keyboard. With voice recognition, you can focus on whatever you’re doing at the moment while still finishing other tasks.

Speech recognition can also help people with hearing disabilities a lot. It can be used to “listen’’ to spoken words and turn them into text that deaf people can read. Advanced speech recognition software can even hear words spoken in one language and then translate it into another language.

As voice recognition software becomes more advanced, it will be able to help us in even more ways. So far, most voice recognition technology is not able to recognize specific (特定的) voices. Many environmental experts now believe that it is more responsible for global warming than carbon dioxide. It is estimated（估计）that 25% of all methane released（释放）into the air comes from farm animals.

Another way that meat production affects the environment is through the use of water and land. 2,500 gallons of water are needed to produce one pound of beef while only 20 gallons of water are needed to produce one pound of wheat. One acre of farmland used for crop（农作物）production can produce 40,000 pounds of potatoes, 30,000 pounds of carrots, or 50,000 pounds of tomatoes, however, one acre of farmland used for raising cows can produce just 250 pounds of beef.

Many people now see the benefits of a vegetarian diet, not just for health reasons, but also because it plays an important role in protecting the environment. However, some nutritionists advise against switching to a totally strict vegetarian, or vegan diet. They believe a vegan diet, which excludes（拒绝）all products from animal sources, such as cheese, eggs, and milk, can be short of many necessary vitamins and minerals our bodies need.

Today, many people know that it is important to take better care of their bodies, and to use the earth’s resources more efficiently. As this understanding spreads, more people may realize that to help the environment and for the human race to survive, more of us will need to become vegetarian.
