21、 It is important to teach your dog to guard you and the other members of your family to fight against danger Here are some tips on how to train your dog to protect you.
【1】
It is very important to introduce your dog to other people and let it interact with them. A good guard dog is friendly to the people around it. This exercise is very important because it will help the dog distinguish between good people and bad people. 【2】
Use proper commands
A dog acts according to how it has been trained. The only way to do this is through com- mands and your own body actions and sounds. Command the dog to attack by saying the word “Attack” loudly. Soon, whenever you use the command "Attack!", your dog will understand that it needs to fight the thing you are pointing at. 【3】 , you must also train it to stop the attack.
Teach night guarding
Teach your dog to keep a check on the house by taking it around the house and making it sniff the area. You will need to do this a couple of times so that the dog understands that it needs to keep a check every night. 【4】 . It will check the house and return back indoors.
Reward it for its good behavior
Giving rewards such as a pat, a hug, verbal praise "Good dog!" or treats is an excellent way of letting the dog know that you are happy with its behavior. 【5】 , it is your duty to make sure your dog is rewarded for its good behavior and punished for its bad behavior. Pun-ishment involves scolding the dog by using the command "Bad dog!” or "No, very bad!” This will help the dog learn that it mustn't do certain things.
A.Since you are the master
B.Encourage communication
C.While you are training the dog to attack
D.Train an older dog to protect its master
E.After a few days, the dog will begin to check on its own
F.People who are good will be those who are allowed to come close to it
G.If your dog does not come inside, you will need to command it to get back
22、A 63-year-old Chinese carpenter’s traditional skills have become an unexpected Internet hit as he creates woodwork with a single piece of wood, without glue, screws or nails. Wang De wen, known as “Grandpa Amu” on YouTube, has been praised as the modern day Lu Ban, a well-known Chinese structural engineer during the Zhou Dynasty, thanks to his rich carpentry(木工手艺) knowledge.
Grandpa Amu’s most popular video, which shows him making a delicate wooden arch bridge, has gone viral on YouTube, gaining more than 40 million views. “If you do something, you have to love it, and you have to be interested in it; however, being interested doesn’t mean there’s only happiness and no pain.” Grandpa Amu shared when talking about his excellent carpentry skills.
His most popular works include a folding stool, a model of the China pavilion from the 2010 Shanghai Expo, and an apple-shaped interlocking puzzle, known as a Lu Ban lock. Grandpa Amu follows an ancient Chinese mortise and tenon(榫卯) technique, which means no nails or glue are involved in the entire process of building the arch bridge.

Attracting over 1.17 million fans on YouTube, Grandpa Amu’s videos so far have gained more than 200 million views.

23、When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Doctor Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'd ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard, but was always very kind.
When Doctor Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. He had some interesting theories about planting trees. He believed in the principle: "No pain, no gain". He hardly watered his new trees, which flew in the face of conventional wisdom. Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants spoiled them because it made them grow weaker. He said you had to make things tough for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how, if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water. So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he'd beat them with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention.
Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some twenty five years ago. They were all tall and strong.
I planted a couple of trees myself a few years ago. Two years of attending these trees meant they grew up weak. Whenever a cold wind blew, their branches trembled. Adversity(逆境) seemed to benefit Doctor Gibb's trees in ways comfort and ease never could.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I often pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to meet with hardship. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won't be torn apart.
【1】With the trees planted, Doctor Gibbs often ________.
A. kept watering them every morning
B. beat them to make them grow deep roots
C. talked to them to get their attention
D. paid little attention to them
【2】Which prayer does the author wish for his sons?
A. Have an easy life, without too much to worry about.
B. Be able to stand the rain and wind in their lives.
C. Have good luck, encountering less hardship in their life.
D. Meet people like Dr Gibbs in the future.
【3】Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Prayers for my sons B. Doctor Gibbs and his trees
C. Growing roots D. Watering trees
24、Josie, who is 17 years old, said, “Why do my parents do the same things they tell me not to do? For example, my mum stops me from shouting through the walls and asks me to go and speak to her face-to-face, but she always shouts through the walls to me. What can I do?”
That is a very good point. Parents can be completely inconsistent (不一致), and usually they don’t realize it. You see this a lot in many things like smartphones. Parents always say to their kids, “Oh, you can’t use that. That device (设备) is bad for you, so stop using it at the table. It’s harmful.” But then they are on theirs continually. So what do you expect teenagers to do?
The whole “Do as I say, not as I do” thing is an annoyance, especially for a teenager who is dying for independence and respect but isn’t getting them.
What can teenagers do with it? I would say you should point it out by calmly saying something like “You tell me not to scream through the walls, but you do it to me, so you can understand where I’m coming from. That’s not ideal.” They might object to it, but I think most parents who care about being parents would logically say, “That’s a reasonable point.”
There are a lot of conflicts (矛盾) going on between teenagers and their parents, but a lot of studies show that the conflicts are resolved a lot more when they turn into a dialogue.
If you can talk at a time when you’re both feeling a bit calmer, like just in the kitchen or doing something unimportant, then go in and say, “Can I just mention it? You tell me not to do this, but you do it too.” If you can approach it in a more calm and stress-free manner, most parents will respond positively.
【1】How did Josie feel according to her words in paragraph 1?
A.Hopeful.
B.Bored.
C.Proud.
D.Confused.
【2】What does the underlined word “theirs” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The parents’ smartphones.
B.The tables in the house.
C.The devices in the house.
D.The teenagers’ points.

A.Object to it personally.
B.Complain of it continually.
C.Talk with their parents calmly.
D.Do some studies differently.
【4】What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A.To list a fact.
B.To offer a suggestion.
