二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、How many times do you check your Facebook page in a day to see whether your latest post has got another “like” or “thumbs(拇指) up”?

Although you might be embarrassed to admit how many times you do this, don’t worry—psychological findings have shown it’s completely normal. In fact, the pleasure we derive from receiving a “like” is equal to that of eating chocolate or winning money, and we can’t help wanting more. According to the findings, which observed 32 teens aged between 13 and 18, the feedback circuit (反馈回路) in the teens’ brains is particularly sensitive, and the “social” and “visual” parts of their brains were active when they received “likes” on the social network. The research also showed that though the thumbs up might come from complete strangers, the good they derive from them worked all the same.

So, does it mean we should try our best to win as many thumbs up as possible? Not necessarily so if we know the reasons behind our desire for attention. In “why do people long for attention” by M. Farouk Radwan, he explained several cases in which people naturally longed for attention. Radwan said people who were an only child, who were used to being the center of attention in their house, may try to copy these conditions. Feeling “overlooked and unappreciated” might also lead you to long for attention. Other times, the state of being jealous, or wanting to cover your mistakes may also contribute to such longings.

In fact, too much desire for attention can create anxiety, and in turn ruin your happiness even when you get it. So what can we do about it? The answer is quite simple. “If people could adopt goals not focused on their own self-esteem(自尊)but on something larger than their self, such as what they can create or contribute to others, they would be less sensitive to some of the negative effects of pursuing self-esteem,” wrote psychology professor Jennifer Crocker.

So perhaps the answer to our addiction to “likes” is simply to focus on something larger than ourselves—a hard, but a worthy one.

1Which of the following is TRUE?

    A. The thumbs up from complete strangers don’t work.

    B. Desire for attention can definitely create anxiety.

    C. Feeling ignored might lead you to be in need of attention.

    D. The brain of teenagers is seldom sensitive.

2What’s the reaction of receiving “likes” on the social network to the brain?

    A. The social and visual parts become more nervous.

    B. The social and visual parts of the brain are active.

    C. The physical and sense parts of the brain become less sensitive.

    D. The whole brain becomes cleverer.

3Who wants to get more attention according to the passage?

    A. Teens who want to discover their mistakes.   B. The old who lives happily with children.

    C. The young who feels anxious.   D. The one who is the only child.

4What’s Crocker’s suggestion about the negative effects of getting self-esteem?

    A. Doing an interesting matter.   B. Working harder than ever before.

    C. Having a bigger goal than their self.   D. Not checking your Facebook page in a day.

  • 22、Swimming has been called the perfect exercise. After all, you can get all of the benefits of an aerobic (有氧的) workout without any damage to joints, and it can be done by both the very old and the very young. 【1】 — just you and the deep blue. So, let’s take a big breath, and dive into the benefits of swimming.

Full body workout. 【2】. So, whether you swim a gentle breaststroke (蛙泳) or backbreaking butterfly, you will get a full body workout. Plus, exercising in water makes your bodywork harder, so, 30 minutes in a pool is worth 45 minutes of the same activity on land.

Destress and relax. Whether it’s work stressing you out, the kids being a nightmare, or just life in general, we all get times when we just want to SCREAM. 【3】. Swimming regularly can lower stress levels, reduce anxiety and depression, and improve your sleep patterns.

Burn those calories. Swimming is one of the most effective ways to burn calories. A gentle swim can burn over 200 calories in just half an hour, more than double that of walking. 【4】.

No sweat. If sweating puts you off other forms of exercise, fear not! As a swimmer, you’ll never feel sweaty no matter how hard you work because the water around you is constantly cooling you down.

【5】. While all exercise can produce greater health and longevity, studies point to swimming as one of the best choices for doing so. Researchers at the University of South Carolina looked at 40, 547 men, aged 20 to 90, for over 32 years. The results showed that those who swam had a 50 percent lower death rate than runners, walkers, or men who didn’t exercise.

    A.Lengthen your life

    B.Well, help is at hand

    C.Lower the risk of accidents

D.And there is no fancy equipment needed

E.Swimming uses all the muscles in the body

F.No matter what your fitness level, the general benefits of swimming are yours

G.And a faster swim would see a chocolate bar gone quicker than if you went running or cycling

  • 23、Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of the most famous and enduring children’s classics.

The book begins with young Alice catches sight of a small white figure, a rabbit dressed in a waistcoat and holding a pocket watch, murmuring (喃喃细语) to himself that he is late. She runs after the rabbit and follows it into a hole. After falling into the depths of the earth, she finds herself in a corridor full of doors. At the end of the corridor, there is a tiny door with tiny key through which Alice can see a beautiful garden that she is desperate to enter. She then sees a bottle labeled “Drink me”, which she does, and begins to shrink until she is small enough to fit through the door.

Unfortunately, she has left the key that fits the lock on a table, now well out of her reach. She then finds a cake labeled “Eat me”, which again she does, and is restored to her normal size. Disconcerted by this frustrating series of events, Alice begins to cry, and as she does, she shrinks and is washed away in her own tears.

This strange beginning leads to a series of progressively “curiouser and curiouser” events, which see Alice babysit a pig, take part in a tea party, and take part in a game of croquet (槌球). She meets some incredible characters. She also, famously, meets the Queen of Hearts who has a special liking for execution (处决).

The book reaches its climax (高潮) in the trial of the Knave of Hearts, who is charged with stealing the Queen’s pies. A good deal of nonsense evidence is given against the unfortunate man, and a letter is produced which only refers to events by pronouns. Alice, who by now has grown to a great size, support the Knave but the Queen demands her execution. As she is fighting off the Queen’s soldiers, Alice awakes, realizing she has been dreaming all along.

The book is brilliant for children, but with enough joy for life in it to please adults too.

【1】Which of the following statements about the beginning is TRUE?

A.The rabbit follows Alice quietly into a hole.

B.Alice’s sister is reading a book in the garden.

C.The beautiful corridor is full of windows and doors.

D.Alice drinks a bottle of liquid and starts to become smaller.

【2】The underlined word “disconcerted” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.

    A.annoyed and distracted

    B.puzzled and frightened

    C.amazed and excited

    D.persuaded and encouraged

【3】What can be inferred from the climax of the book?

A.Alice is courageous enough to be in favor of the Knave.

B.The Queen is so kind as to free the Knave.

C.The Knave is charged in a letter which details his crimes.

D.The soldiers are still fighting with Alice after she awakes.

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

A.The unbelievable characters in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

B.The mysterious settings of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

C.The attractive plot of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

D.The readers of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

  • 24、   One of the best uses of technology is to make life easier.

A new product from Microsoft Corporation can do just that for people who have trouble seeing. They may be blind or visually impaired. The product, an app, is currently available for free for Apple’s iPhone and iPad. The app is called Seeing AI. “AI” is short for artificial intelligence, a term for computers with an ability to think and learn like human beings.

Seeing AI uses both a camera and artificial intelligence to identify places, objects and people. The app then announces what the camera sees so users will know what is in front of them.

People can also use Seeing AI to learn words in English. With the app open, you can point your iPhone or iPad at any object and it will say what the object is. With Seeing AI, users can hear a description of not just objects, but other people. It can even tell you about their emotions. It will not just say that someone is smiling. The app will say that the person is happy. Or surprised. Or angry. People can use the app when going to a store or supermarket. It can read product bar codes so users will know whether a can is filled with fruit or dog food. Microsoft says Seeing AI will soon be able to identify banknotes so people know whether they are holding a bill that is worth $100 or $1.

At restaurants, diners can use the new app to hear a list of drinks and other menu offerings. It can recognize both food choices and prices. People can use the app to read signs and get directions, although Microsoft warns against using it for navigation(导航) purposes.

One of the more interesting tools of Seeing AI is its ability to read documents. The app can read documents aloud and even help a user position them on the center of the electronic device.

The app is currently available in just the US, Canada, India, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Singapore---however, Microsoft says that the app will be available in other countries and districts soon.

    A.describing a person B.navigating

C.reading documents D.reading product bar codes
