二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、We’ve known for years that plants can see, hear, smell and communicate with chemicals. Now, reported New Scientist, they have been recorded making sounds when stressed.

In a yet-to-be-published study, Itzhak Khait and his team at Tel Aviv University, in Israel, found that tomato and tobacco (烟草) plants can make ultrasonic (超声的) noises. The plants “cry out” due to lack of water, or when their stems (茎) are cut. It’s just too high-pitched (音调高的) for humans to hear.

Microphones placed 10 centimeters away from the plants picked up sounds in the ultrasonic range of 20 to 100 kilohertz (千赫兹). Human hearing usually ranges from 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz. “These findings can change the way we think about the plant kingdom,” they wrote.

On average, “thirsty” tomato plants made 35 sounds an hour, while tobacco plants made 11. When plant stems were cut, tomato plants made an average of 25 sounds in the following hour, and tobacco plants 15. Unstressed plants produced fewer than one sound per hour, on average.

Perhaps most interestingly, different types of stress led to different sounds. The researchers trained a machine-learning model to separate the plants’ sounds from those of the wind, rain and other noises of the greenhouse. In most cases, it correctly identified (辨识) whether the stress was caused by dryness or a cut, based on a sound’s intensity(强度) and frequency. Water-hungry tobacco appears to make louder sounds than cut tobacco, for example. Although Khait and his colleagues only looked at tomato and tobacco plants, they think other plants also make sounds when stressed.

If farmers could hear these sounds, said the team, they could give water to the plants that need it most. As climate change causes more droughts (旱灾), they said this would be important information for farmers. “The sounds that drought-stressed plants make could be used in precision agriculture (精准农业),” said Anne Visscher at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the UK.

Khait’s report also suggests that insects and mammals (哺乳动物) can hear the sounds up to 5 meters away and respond. For example, a moth (蛾子) may decide not to lay eggs on a water-stressed plant. Edward Farmer, at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, is doubtful. He said that the idea of moths listening to plants is “a little too speculative”.

If plants are screaming for fear of their survival, maybe we should be glad we can’t hear them.

【1】What did Khait and his team find from their research?

A.Plants made low-pitched sounds when in danger.

B.Plants made ultrasonic noises to communicate with each other.

C.Plants picked up a wider range of sounds when stressed.

D.Plants were able to produce sounds in response to stresses.

【2】How did tomato and tobacco plants react to different stresses according to the text?

A.A plant reacted to different stresses with the same sound.

B.Cut tomato plants produced more sounds per hour than water-hungry ones.

C.Cut tobacco plants seemed to make weaker sounds than drought-stressed ones.

D.Tobacco plants might make louder sounds than tomato plants when short of water.

【3】What’s the main idea of Paragraph 6?

A.Challenges faced by farmers in the future.

B.The potential applications of the research.

    C.Farmers’ contributions to the research.

D.What the future agriculture will be like.

【4】The underlined word “speculative” in the second-to-last paragraph has the closest meaning to “______”.

    A.practical

    B.unsupported

    C.surprising

    D.complicated

  • 22、   Time to load up some popular games: new research indicates pigs possess the mental capability to play video games. The study, published in Frontiers In Psychology, tested the ability of four pigs(Hamlet, Omelette, Ebony and Ivory)to play a simple joystick(操纵杆)game with their noses, moving a cursor(光标)to four targets on the screen. Although the animals didn’t demonstrate the skills to win a round any time soon, they did show an understanding of some elementary games.

Performing well above chance, the pigs appeared to recognize the movement of the cursor was controlled by the joystick. The fact that they did so well despite a lack of flexible fingers is “extraordinary”, according to the researchers.

“It is no small achievement for an animal, to grasp the concept that the behaviour they are performing is having an effect elsewhere. That pigs can do this to any degree should give us pause as to what else they are capable of learning and how such learning may impact them,” said Purdue University’s Dr Candace Croney, the study’s lead author.

Researchers also noted that while the pigs could be taught to play the game using food as positive motivation, they also responded well to social interaction. In fact, when the game was made more challenging and the pigs became unwilling to participate in, “only oral encouragement by the experimenter” would see training continue.

These findings are the latest to highlight the intelligence of pigs. Not only have they been shown to use mirrors to find hidden food, but studies have also demonstrated how pigs can be taught to “come” and “sit” after oral commands.

“As with any sentient(有感觉力的)beings, how we interact with pigs and what we do to them impacts and matters to them,” Croney said. “We therefore have a moral duty to understand how pigs acquire information, and what they are capable of leaning and remembering, because it ultimately offers the potential for how they understand their interactions with us and their environments.”

【1】What can we learn from Paragraphs 1 and 2?

A.Pigs have the potential to play games well.

B.Pigs have noses as flexible as human hands.

C.Pigs possess the mental ability we didn’t know.

D.Pigs know well about what they are playing.

【2】What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Playing joystick games so well.

B.Realizing the effects of their acts.

C.Carrying out tasks with their noses.

    D.Following human oral commands.

【3】Which of the following can improve the performance of trained pigs?

    A.Less challenging video games.

B.A nice treat before the experiment.

    C.Severe punishment if necessary.

    D.Inspiring words from experimenters.

【4】What does the author think of the research findings?

A.They reflect the needs to interact more with animals.

B.They offer humans ideas of how to live with animals.

C.They encourage us to explore how pigs interact with us.

D.They show us how pigs interact with their environments.

  • 23、   Cowboys, policemen, princesses and superheroes are all characters kids choose to be on any given day. Putting on a play can be a fun activity that lets them act out their favorite characters as well as use their artistic ability to create the stage.

Best of all, they will be able to use their favorite line “ look at me” as the audience sits down to enjoy the production.

Help your kids decide on a play they would like to act out. Use the Internet or the library to find scripts (剧本) for older reading kids. For younger kids, they can act out a favorite story or a fairy tale. Of course, you could always help them write their own scripts.

Decide how many characters are needed. Invite neighbors and friends to be in your play or let your kids play more than one character. Make sure you teach them to change the way they look, move and speak so the audience can tell the difference.

Search for costumes and props (道具) supplies. Find clothes from your closet or attic (阁楼) , or go to a garage sale. Help everyone make a mask or put on makeup to represent their characters.

Get creative. Make tickets, invitations, movie posters and props for your kids’ play. You can even decorate a curtain and hang it in front of the stage. Set up chairs for the audience.

Choose your music. Pick something that goes with the theme of the play. Ask someone to play the piano or have the kids make up songs and help them make homemade instruments.

Rehearse the play. The more the play is practiced, the better it will be. Try starting early in the summer and practicing once a week. Set out a snack after rehearsal and make it light-hearted and fun. Then perform the play at the end of the summer vacation.

Invite the audience to sit down and enjoy the play.

  • 24、Japanese archaeologists (考古学家) have uncovered al 7.5-foot-long irons sword and a bronze mirror from an ancient tomb near the city of Nara. Researchers found both artifacts while unearthing a l,600-year-old site called Tomio Maruyama.

The weapon, known as a dako sword, is so large that it was likely never used for self-defense, serving instead as a means of protection against evil after death. Like other dako swords unearthed in the country, this one looks like a snake. Due to the artifact’s size, the researchers initially thought they had found multiple swords lined up next to each other.

Experts said the mirror, which is shaped like a shield (盾), was also likely used to shun evil spirits. It measures 25 inches by 12 inches and weighs more than 12 pounds, making it the largest of its kind discovered in Japan, too.

The finds offer new insights into the Kofun period, which lasted from around the year 250 AD to 538 AD and is named for the distinctive tomb mounds, constructed to bury members of the ruling class. Kosaku Okabayashi, the deputy director for Nara prefecture’s Archaeological Institute of Kashihara, said, “These discoveries indicate that the technology of the Kofun period is beyond what had been imagined, and they are masterpieces in metalwork from that period.”

Japan is home to an estimated 160,000 burial mounds from the Kofun period, though the Tomio Maruyama kofun is particularly large. Measuring 350 feet in diameter and up to 32 feet tall, it dates back to the late fourth century.

Archaeologists think it has some connection to an influential person who supported the rulers of the day, the imperial Yamato family. Based on the presence of the two artifacts, the dead person may have been involved in military and ritualistic matters. So far, the researchers have discovered a coffin but no human remains in the burial chamber.

【1】How did researchers find an irons sword and a bronze mirror?

    A.By exploring an old tomb.

    B.By asking experienced local villagers.

C.By searching for much information online.

    D.By carefully studying historical materials.

【2】What do we know about the iron sword?

A.It is in a very small size.

B.It looks like a sharp shield.

C.It was mainly used for self-defense.

D.It might be used to drive the evil away.

【3】What does the underlined word “shun” in paragraph 3mean?

    A.Schedule.

    B.Design.

    C.Avoid.

    D.Express.

【4】What is Kosaku Okabayashi’s attitude towards the two discoveries in paragraph 4?

    A.Negative.

    B.Appreciative.

    C.Unclear.

    D.Indifferent.
