26、 Advice to “sleep on it” could be well founded, scientists say. After a good night’s sleep a problem that couldn’t be solved the night before can often appear more manageable, although the evidence until now has been anecdotal. But researchers at the University of Luebek in Germany have designed an experiment that shows a good night’s sleep can improve insight and problem-solving.
“If you have some newly-got memories in your brain, sleep acts on these memories and restructures them, so that after sleep the insight into problem which you could not solve before increases,” said Dr. Jan Born, a neuroscientist, at the university. To test the theory, they taught volunteers two simple rules to help them turn a string of numbers into a new order. There was also a third, hidden rule, which could help them increase their speed in solving the problem. The researchers divided the volunteers into two groups: half were allowed to sleep after the training while the rest were forced to stay awake.
Dr. Jan Born and his team noticed that the group that had slept after the training were twice as likely to figure out the third rule as the other group. “Sleep helped,” Born said in a telephone interview. “The important thing is that you have to have a memory representation in your brain of the problem you want to solve and then you sleep, so it can act on the problem.
“But Born admitted that he and his team don’t know how restructuring of memories occurs or what governs it. Pierre Maquet and Perrine Ruby of the University of Liege in Belgium said the experimental evidence supports the anecdotal suggestions that sleep can help develop creative thinking. Although the role of sleep in human creativity will still be a mystery, the research gives people good reason to fully respect their periods of sleep, they added.

28、 When there are some strangers in front of us, which of them will we trust?
According to a new study in the online PLOSOne, people make their decisions to trust others largely based on their faces. Your appearance can do a lot for you, especially if you are in the financial industry. The more trustworthy you look, the more likely people will buy what you’re selling.
Researchers from Britain’s University of Warwick Business School, University College London, and Dartmouth College, US, did a number of experiments.
The research team used computer software to make 40 faces, from the least to the most trustworthy-looking. The study said that the difference between a trustworthy face and one that isn’t as trustworthy comes from features that look slightly angry or slightly happy, even when the face is at rest. However, a slightly happy face is more likely to be trusted. Researchers gave participants some money and asked them which face they trusted to invest the money for them. Then researchers gave some good and bad information about the people with these faces, and asked the participants again whom they trusted. The results showed that even if they got different information, the participants didn’t change their choices. They were still more likely to invest their money with the more trustworthy-looking faces.
Chris Olivola, one of the study’s authors, said in the University of Warwick’s press release: “It seems we are still willing to go with our own instincts about whether we think someone looks like we can trust them.”
【1】According to the study, which of the following faces is most likely to be trusted?
A.An embarrassed face. B.A disappointed face.
C.A smiling face. D.A nervous face.
【2】What do we know about the experiments?
A.Most participants gave their money to the trustworthy-looking faces.
B.Researchers took photos of the 40 people’s faces in colleges.
C.The trustworthy faces were given good information.
D.Participants liked to choose the faces with good information.
【3】Which of the following best explains “instincts” underlined in the last paragraph?
A.Feelings rather than opinions or ideas based on facts.
B.Judgements that are easily changed by others.
C.Good information that are given by people around.
D.Opinions that grow out of social practice.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.Why people trust a stranger with good appearance.
B.People usually judge strangers according to their faces.
C.How different information affects people’s decisions.
D.Why the research team carried out the experiment.
29、Black holes were first put forward by Albert Einstein in 1916. However, scientists had not proved their directly. That changed on April 10, 2019, with the release of the first photo of a black hole in the center of the galaxy (星系)M87, located 55 million light years from Earth.
The photo does not show the black hole itself. That's because they are black and so they can't be seen in space.the scientists used radio signals to capture (拍摄)the black hole's "shadow" —the bright ring that forms around its edge, when light bends because of the extreme gravity around the hole.
The M87 black hole, believed to have a mass 6.5 billion times that of our sun, was captured using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT)—a network of eight powerful telescopes(望远镜.)The telescopes, located in Hawaii, Arizona , Chile, Mexico, Spain and Antarctica, separately captured the black holl' s radio signals over four nights in April 2017, when the weather was fine in all six places. The data was transpcried to a centre where it was dealt with by a supercomputer to form the photo of the black hole's shadow. The researchers say while the photo is slightly blurry, future photos will be clearer as more telescopes are added to the EHT. Black ' holes are not easy to capture on camera because they are surrounded by thick dusty and hot gases.
Black holes are areas in space where the pulling strength of gravity is so powerful that even light is unable to escape. They can be different widely in size and mass. The smallest, called "primordial" black holes are as small as a single atom but with a mass of a big mountain. " Stellar' black holes, which are the most common, have a diameter (直径)of about 10 miles and a mass 20 times that of our sun. The largest or “supermassive' black holes, similar to that of M87's, can have a mass . greater than millions, or even billions of suns combined.
【1】What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A.Einstein's predicticn about black holes is right.
B.Einstein captured the black hole a century ago.
C.Scientists haven't proved black holes' presence.
D.The black hole has been known for centuries.
【2】What did the scientists use to capture the black hole's "shadow"?
A.Moon light.
B.Natural light.
C.Radio signals.
D.Sound waves.
【3】What does the underlined word “blurry” in the third paragraph probably mean?
A.Not big.
B.Not clear.
C.Not new.
D.Not attractive.
【4】What can we know about the M87 black hole?
A.It is almost empty.
B.It is the smallest one.
C.It is very bright.
D.It is very large.

Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.
The sport you choose may 【1】.Some sports are 【2】, like golf, which not only 【3】, but 【4】 as well, doing damage to environment; while others 【5】, like the power walking, which is 【6】. Thus 【7】 you choose to do, use 【8】.
