二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Should we allow modern   buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let's assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?

In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own home town of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响)its surroundings too much, it often improves attractiveness of the area.

It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(破坏)the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative and do not like change.

Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, though that might be the more risky choice.

【1】What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph?

A.Some of them are not attractive.

B.Most of them are too expensive to preserve.

C.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.

D.They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.

【2】Which of the following is true according to the author?

A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.

B.Buildings should no dominate their surroundings.

C.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.

D.No one understands why people speak against new buildings.

【3】By "move things forward" in the last paragraph, the author probably means " "

    A.destroy old buildings

B.put things in a difference place

    C.choose new architectural styles

D.respect people's feeling for historical buildings

【4】What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To explain why people dislike change

B.To warn that we could end up living in caves.

C.To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.

D.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.

  • 27、   “Years ago when I was at the Grand Canyon, I remembered someone coming up to the canyon's edge, taking a shot with a camera and then walking away, like “got it – done”, barely even glancing at the magnificent scene in front of him,” Linda Henkel, a scientist at Fairfield University, US told Live Science.

Henkel was surprised by how obsessed people are busy with taking pictures these days – before dinner, during friends' birthday parties, on museum tours and so on.

They keep taking pictures because they think that it helps record the moment, but as Henkel's latest study has just found out, this obsession may prevent their brains remembering what actually happened, reported The Guardian.

In her study, Henkel led a group of college students around a museum and asked them to simply observe 15 objects and photograph 15 others. The next day the students' memory of the tour was tested, and the results showed that they were less accurate in recognizing the objects and they remembered fewer details about them if they photographed them.

'When people rely on technology to remember them – counting on the camera to record the event and thus not needing to attend to it fully themselves, it can have a negative impact on how well they remember their experiences,” Henkel explained.

But there is also an exception: if students zoomed in to photograph part of an object, their memory actually improved, and those who focused the lens on a specific area could even recall parts that weren't in the frame.

So basically, this study is saying that constantly taking pictures can harm your memory. But shouldn't reviewing pictures we have taken help wake up our memories? This is true, but only if we spend enough time doing it.

“In order to remember, we have to access and interact with the photos, rather than just collect them,” Henkel told The Telegraph. However, previous research has shown that most people never take the time to look over their digital pictures simply because there are too many of them and they aren't usually very organized on their computers.

【1】Why did the author mention Henkel's trip to the Grand Canyon at the beginning?

A.To complain about some tourists' bad habits.

B.To give suggestions on how to enjoy one's tour.

C.To point out people's obsession with taking pictures.

D.To describe the beautiful view of the Grand Canyon.

【2】What can we learn from Henkel's study?

A.Reviewing pictures always helps people bring back memories easily.

B.Taking pictures in a museum tour helps students recognize objects better.

C.People should spend more time taking pictures than studying real objects.

D.Pictures focusing on the details of objects probably improve people's memories.

【3】The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 probably refers to “________”.

    A.the camera

    B.technology

    C.the event

    D.an object

【4】What is the article mainly about?

A.People's obsession with taking pictures and its influence.

B.Possible ways of using pictures to improve one's memory.

C.Great harm to memory caused by taking pictures constantly.

D.A believable study into the negative impact of lining cameras often.

【5】What’s the author’s attitude towards taking pictures constantly?

    A.supportive

    B.cautious

    C.negative

    D.objective

  • 28、The population of the capital Luxembourg City doubles every working day thanks to the flood of workers, and in the morning and evening rush hours, there often comes traffic block. It’s a familiar difficult problem but here they’ve come up with a novel solution.

From next year public transport will be free for everyone. The number of people taking the public transport is far from what is expected and so this idea has been brought up, which of course results in some argument.

This is what’s being built, a new tram system that will link trains in park-and-ride programs designed to make free public transport smooth and attractive. This is a big attempt by the Luxembourg government into whether people can be made to change the way they behave, because free public transport is great for existing commuters. But the question is whether drivers can be persuaded to change their cars and traffic jams for commuting on public transport.

The designer firmly believes the system is so good and effective. Everyone will want to use it. Everyone can use it, young or old, rich or poor, and everyone can say to themselves it’s better to leave the car at home. But others consider it questionable.

Taxi drivers don’t seem worried about trams stealing their trade. Businessmen who come here are never going to take public transport. They’ll take a taxi because they have meetings to get to.

So Luxembourg’s plan is really a test, and it’s one that plenty of bigger nations will be watching. As we know, the way we move around shapes our cities, our lives, our work and our environment. Luxembourg is a very small country but this could be a very big idea.

【1】Why does Luxembourg City plan to make public transport free?

    A.To reduce traffic jams.

    B.To attract more businessmen.

C.To encourage people to avoid rush hours.

D.To help its citizens travel more comfortably.

【2】What can we infer about the result of the plan?

A.Taxi drivers’ business will be badly affected.

B.More people will choose to drive to and from work.

C.People’s daily behavior will be completely changed.

D.Taking public transport can save money for commuters.

【3】How does the designer feel about the system?

    A.Hopeless.

    B.Concerned.

    C.Confident.

    D.Regretful.

【4】What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?

A.To list the traffic problems Luxembourg faces.

B.To show how Luxembourg controls its population.

C.To give people advice on how to get around Luxembourg.

D.To introduce Luxembourg’s new public transport measure.

  • 29、   You may ride on your bicycle in a rush to get to school every morning. You may fight to get a bit of space on a bus or on the subway. You may also watch taxis crawl their way through traffic jams.

No matter where you are, all big cities around the world have traffic jams these days. Although they all have their problems, many cities also have a type of transport that has become a cultural icon (文化标识).

In London, to avoid the traffic above ground, people use the “underground”, also called the “Tube”. The city has the oldest and most complicated underground railway system in the world and it is the pride of many Londoners. With 12 lines and 275 stations across the city, the Tube is normally the quickest and easiest way of getting around London. In London, you are never far from a Tube station.

New York is famous for its Yellow cabs. They serve as a quick and easy way of getting across Manhattan, where the subway doesn’t take you everywhere. Stopping a cab is easy, just stick out your arm like what you do in any city. But, with over 12,000 yellow cabs in the Big Apple, they also cause traffic jams.

Since 1873 when the first cable car started public service, the slow and noisy vehicle has been a symbol of San Francisco. Although once damaged by a serious earthquake and challenged by cars, it is never caught in traffic jams and provides better views than the subway.

But there are no such symbols in Los Angeles. If you visit you’d better rent a car. The city’s public transportation is terrible. It can take hours to get across town by bus. The subway covers just a small part of the city centre. The light rail line only runs between the Long Beach hotel area and the city centre. That’s why Angelenos love their private cars more than any other people in the world.

1How will you travel if you have a chance to London and want to avoid the traffic jam?

    A.Riding a vehicle. B.Taking a taxi.

    C.Taking the subway. D.Renting a car.

2Which type of transportation has become a cultural icon of the Big Apple?

    A.Noisy vehicles. B.Cable cars.

    C.The subway. D.Yellow cabs.

3Which of the following is not the reason why people in Los Angeles like their private cars?

    A.The public transportation is terrible.

B.It is not expensive to take a private car.

C.The underground railway covers a small part of the city center.

D.People have to spend hours getting across Los Angeles by bus.

4The passage is mainly about ________.

A.how different the big cities are

B.how to avoid the traffic jams in big cities

C.why London has the oldest and most complicated subway

D.why people call New York the Big Apple
