26、Dan Buettner, the author of Thrive: Finding Happiness the Blue Zone Way, set out to find the happiest places on earth, and he thinks he’s discovered four competitors on four different continents.
Singapore
With one of the highest population densities (密度) in the world and residents known for being workaholics, it’s hard to imagine the city-state of Singapore having one of the happiest populations on earth. And yet in a recent survey, 95% of them said they were either very happy or quite happy. They give their city high marks for cleanliness and safety. Subways are unfailingly arrive on time, and police are seen as helpful and good at their jobs.
Arhus, Denmark
The residents of Arhus cheerfully part with 68% of their income in taxes, knowing that in return they will be guaranteed free healthcare, free daycare, and a topnotch education for their children. A robust city of 300,000 with a lively cultural scene and a diverse number of religions represented, the sense of community and equality (the range in incomes is narrow), as well as easy access to the nearby sea and surrounding countryside, make Arhus seem more like a small town. “We believe that a rich person is not necessarily the one with a lot of money.”
San Luis Obispo, CA
According to a 2008 Gallup-Healthways study, people who live in San Luis Obispo are more likely than residents of other U.S. cities to smile and experience joy and are less likely to experience pain or depression. Some 64,000 of the 260,000 people volunteer at over 11,000 non-profit organizations. Business signs are unremarkable by law, fewer than 11% of residents smoke—the lowest rate in the U.S. , and the city’s plaza draws lots of people for free concerts on summer Fridays.
Monterrey, Mexico
Unlike San Luis Obispans, the people of Monterrey don’t enjoy high household incomes or access to good healthcare. Instead, there’s a profound sense of gratitude for the new political freedom enjoyed since the oppressive Institutional Revolutionary Party lost power in 2000. Another reason Monterrey residents may be so happy is their faith in God and family. “We laugh at sickness, poverty and even death,” says Basanez. “We even have a holiday to celebrate death. November 2, the Day of the Dead, is one of the biggest holidays of the year.”

27、As the days are getting colder, you might wish you could magically turn into a bear and spend the winter sleeping. But don’t be too jealous of the bear, as scientists are looking for ways to let humans hibernate, too!
Hibernation is a state where an animal’s heart rate, breathing and metabolism slow down. Then they can save energy during winter months to survive a shortage of food.
Japanese researchers have found the secret behind hibernation-the “Q neurons”. These neurons in animals’ brains can put them into a hibernation state. The researchers also did surgeries on mice after turning on the mice’s “Q neurons”. It turned out that during hibernation, the surgeries did less damage to the mice’s organs.
According to the team, humans’ “Q neurons” cannot be turned on and off as easily as the mice’s. But they are confident in copying the mice’s hibernation in humans. That means we could let people “hibernate” when having surgery, causing less damage to their bodies.
In recent years, more scientists are waking up to the benefits of hibernation. For example, US scientist Katherine Grabek found that when the thirteen-lined ground squirrel hibernates, it cleans out harmful brain plaques that are related to Alzheimer’s in humans. The animal’s blood pressure also goes up and down greatly before and after hibernating. But it doesn’t suffer from any illness related to blood pressure.
Grabek and her team found molecules from the squirrel that can protect against high blood pressure and heart disease. They hope to find more that may affect human health, and then design drugs.
Some studies in bats showed that, during hibernation, their bodies age more slowly. This also provides new ideas for making humans live longer in the future, according to New Scientist magazine.

28、Terry Evanshen was one of Canadian football’s greatest receivers. He played every down (进攻) as if it was his last. Though he had made great achievements, Terry’s memories of his playing days have been completely lost.
It was in the summer of 1988 after he retired from playing that his career in sales was taking off. One day in July, Terry, on his way home from work, had a terrible car accident. He was knocked unconscious, and within minutes he was rushed to the nearby hospital.
Three weeks later, he woke up. However, it became obvious that Terry’s injuries were far more serious than whatever damage had been done to his body. A lifetime of memories had been completely wiped clean. He had been all but reduced to the level of a baby; everything from his ability to talk and walk to his understanding of what it meant to be a husband and a father was all gone.
At age 44, Terry Evanshen would be starting all over again. Luckily he had the support of his family, helped by small victories and a renewed bond between him and his three daughters like when they taught him how to play football again.
In 1992, his recovery really began to pick up steam. It has taken years to rebuild his shattered (破碎的) life, but today, more than 20 years since his playing days, Terry is a popular public speaker. He tells his story of perseverance (坚持不懈) and courage. “Never forget, we’re all in this game of life together. We will get to the finishing line, one day at a time, one moment at a time, but celebrate the journey. Seize today, because yesterday is gone and is never coming back.” As the subject of the most watched Canadian movie of 2005, The Man Who Lost Himself, Evanshen says his family has been his most important treasure. Make sure you are encouraging to your partners. Always be willing to help them and give them honesty and positivity at the same time. Make them feel you are someone they can really depend on and build a future with. 【3】
Make sure you have a good sense of humor with them. Laughter is the key to happiness. Laugh a lot with them, joke with them. Laughter may seem silly, but it’s the secret to a lot in life. It will keep the sparks alive. 【4】
