二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、E-cigarettes are increasingly being used as a nicotine (尼古丁) alternative (替代品) as smokers look for ways to kick their habit — and then stay off cigarettes for good. E-cigarettes work by heating a pure liquid called e-juice — made up of flavorings, propylene glycol, glycerin and often nicotine — until it changes into gas.

The use of vaping (电子烟) for tobacco stopping became especially popular in the UK after a study found that e-cigarettes helped 50,000 to 70,000 smokers in England give up smoking in 2017.

It is said that vaping cleared the 7,000 or more chemicals found in a burning cigarette and its smoke, many of which are harmful, according to Johns Hopkins medicine.

But their use has become controversial (有争议的) in the US and other countries because of warnings about possible long-term health effects, possibly from ingredients besides nicotine in the vape juice or cartridge. The US Surgeon General says vapes can contain “ultrafine substances that can be taken deep into the lungs, flavorants such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to serious lung disease, volatile organic compounds and heavy metals, such as nickel, tin, and lead.”

What's more, countless studies found teen use is a direct gateway to traditional cigarette smoking at a time when teenager use of e-cigarettes was increasing.

A 2019 outbreak of a mysterious vaping-related lung disease among American youth has triggered alarm as well. As of February 2020, the condition had killed at least 68 people and sickened more than 2,807, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

One 18-year-old American who vaped for over a year ended up in the hospital with “lungs like a 70-year-old.”

The condition, now known as EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury), is strongly linked to e-cigarettes containing vitamin E acetate, a sticky oil substance that can cling to lung tissue.

【1】What can we learn about e-cigarettes from the first two paragraphs?

【3】What can be inferred about American teenagers?

    A.E-cigarettes hurt their lungs badly.

    B.They find a way to anti-smoking.

    C.E-cigarettes make them look older.

  • 28、Soft winds blew throughout the Windy City today. We welcomed the winds, as it was another hot day in Chicago. The wind blew, bringing us some coolness and making the weather not that hot. But it was a beautiful summer day with a blue sky.

Chicago is a great city for eating, and we have enjoyed tasting the different foods. Last night, we tried one of the city's most famous foods: deep-dish pizza. Chicago is famous for the rich and cheesy thick-crust pizza, covered with a sweet tomato sauce. We topped it with olives and green peppers.

We were touring the city, mainly looking for delicious local foods. Today, we enjoyed a Polish specialty at lunch: Pierogis, an Eastern European dumpling-like dish, filled with foods like potatoes, cheese, mushrooms, cabbage and meat. Polish immigrants started settling in Chicago in the 1850s, and the city has one of the largest Polish communities in the U.S.

We took a break from exploring the city to talk with some of you! Ashley and Caty logged onto the Internet for an on-the-road version of TALK2US. We spoke to an English teacher in Tokyo, Japan, and a graduate student in India.

Meanwhile, Adam searched for some places around the city to shoot some video. He chose a spectacular spot: Navy Pier, Chicago's most-visited attraction. The winds from Lake Michigan keep visitors cool, and the view of the Chicago skyline never fails to impress. In fact, the view made all of us head over heels!

Our time in Chicago has come to an end.Tomorrow, the true journey begins, as we pass through Illinois and into Missouri via Route 66. Springfield, the home of Abe Lincoln, and St. Louis, the "gateway to the West," wait for us.

【1】Why did the author and her companions(伙伴) like the soft winds?

  • 29、They say once you learn how to ride a bike, you never forget. Most of us learnt when we were kids, and many still put on our helmets, put our feet on the pedals, and shoot off for a ride around the streets. 【1】So the question is, what makes it so appealing to people to ride their bikes once again?

First, let’s look at the health benefits. Cycling can improve your cardiovascular (心血管的) health and burn extra body fat. And it also helps strengthening your leg muscles. 【2】 A long ride in the countryside could help you to clear your mind, or de-stress. But it’s not only about your body and mind, there are also some plus sides for your wallet’s health.

Cycling can be a great way to commute (通勤) or get about town. 【3】 If you do drive into work, sometimes finding somewhere to park can be a nightmare, whereas finding somewhere to chain your bike up can be much simpler. Then, on the train, there are changes at stations and other commuters speaking loudly on their phones. Cyclists face neither of these issues. 【4】 Wearing high-visibility clothing, sometimes referred to as ‘hi-vis’, is another way to improve your safety when cycling on the roads.

【5】It can help you to reduce your carbon footprint. Not pumping out fumes into the atmosphere is better for the planet and your own environment.

So, whether people want to cycle for their health, getting about town, their wallet, the environment, or a combination of all of them, cycling is gaining increasing popularity than ever before.

A.In recent times, cycling is making a comeback.

B.By cycling, you save money on fuel or train fares.

C.Finally, cycling can also be good for the environment.

D.Cycling’s benefits aren’t just physical, but mental as well.

E.And once you have decided on cycling, the next thing is to ride it safely.

F.Many people prefer bicycle tours compared with other forms of transportation.

G.If you’re worried about safety, there are newly-built cycle paths in many cities.
