24、Do you have a headache? Take an aspirin or eat bird brains. Do you want beautiful skin? Use skin cream or eat pearls. Is your hair turning gray? Color your hair or eat black rice.
“Eat bird brains, pearls, and black rice?” some people ask. “How strange!” But for many Chinese people, bird brains, pearls, and black rice are not strange things to eat. Instead, they are good medicines.
Food that people use for medicines is called medical(药用的) food. The Chinese have eaten medicinal food and spices(香辛料) for centuries. Ginger, for example, is a common spice in Chinese cooking. Ginger gives food a nice flavor. The Chinese began to use ginger many years ago. They used ginger not because it tasted good. They used ginger because it was medicinal. Ginger, they thought, was good for the digestion. It also helped people who had colds. Pepper and garlic, too, were probably medicines a long time ago.
Some people don’t believe that food and spices are good medicines. They want to buy their medicine in drugstores, not in supermarkets. Other people want to try medicinal food. They say, “Maybe medicinal food can’t help me. But it can’t hurt me, either.”
People can try medicinal food at a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco, California. The restaurant serves medicinal food. The menus at the restaurant have a list of dinners. Next to each dinner there is information about the food. The information helps people order “Queen’s Secret,” for example, is one dinner at the restaurant. This dinner has meat from chickens with black feathers. It is for women who want to look young.

25、In 2011, Kylie Dunn, a writer from Australia, decided to shake up her life. Every month for a year, she decided to try two new activities. In February 2012, for example, one of her goals was to eat less meat for 30 days. Later, she wrote a letter to a friend or relative every day for a month. In just 12 months, she changed her life in more than 20 different ways.
Dunn was inspired to try her project after watching a TED Talk by Matt Cutts. To get ideas for activities, she watched hundreds of other TED Talks. Her first activity, in November 2011, was inspired by Jessi Arrington’s talk “Wear Nothing New.” Dunn tried each activity for 30 days, and then wrote about her experiences in a blog called “My Year of TED.”
Finally, when her project was over, Dunn talked about her experiences at a TEDx conference (会议) in Hobart, Australia. Dunn’s talk in January 2014 inspired other people to change their attitudes and their lives. Before her project, Dunn says, she didn’t think she had the courage to change her life. The project showed her she had more power than she thought.
“People who watch TED Talks… end up changing their view of the future,” says Chris Anderson, the head of TED. He says that TED’s goal isn’t to make a single big change. TED’s effect is the millions of stories of small changes. Personal changes like Kylie Dunn’s are happening every day. Together, these changes have the power to change the future in a positive way. As Anderson explains, “Instead of thinking of the future as an unstoppable force… people can play a part in shaping it.”
【1】What was Kylie Dunn’s goal in February 2012?
A. To start a blog.
B. To eat less meat.
C. To make new friends.

A. She had more power than she thought.
B. She would live better because of TED Talks.
C. She could give good speeches on TED Talks.
D. She could change her life by wearing new clothes.
【3】What is TED’s goal according to Chris Anderson?
A. To make serious speeches.
B. To make a single big change.
C. To make small changes every day.
D. To stop people’s life from changing.
【4】What can we learn from the passage?

C. Dunn was inspired to try her project by Chris Anderson.
D. Dunn shared her experiences at a TEDx conference in 2014.
26、 Lisa has been to Antarctica (南极洲). Here is a page from her.
Tuesday December 2
We planned to go to Rothera that morning. We’d be staying there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on earth, sometimes you can’t fly at all.
We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we’d be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather.
It turned clear at 9: 30 and we took off at 10: 30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn’t be able to fly the whole day.
Wednesday December 3
After waking up in the Antarctica for the first time today, I can understand why everybody who comes here falls in love with the place. It is really beautiful.
We’re staying at Rothera Survey base with mountains of ice all around. It’s about minus 2℃ today, which for me is very cold, but the regulars here are often seen walking around in T-shirts!
Thursday December 4
I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here in the Antarctica. I’m told it’s a bit colder today, about minus 5℃, but it’s not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the base have to do a special training course before we're allowed to go off the base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill.
Saturday December 6
Not a cloud in the sky and it’s warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket).
The most amazing thing about this place is how the scenery changes every day. At first I thought I was going mad. I’d step outside in the morning and think, “I’m sure that big mountain of ice wasn’t there yesterday.” It’s because the sea ice is always moving—slowly thankfully.

27、 Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not true.
Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here is some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟).
Don’t argue (争辩) with your parents. Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express (表达) yourself well if you are angry. Firstly keep calm. Then make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Next think about what you want to say to them. If you don’t want to talk with them face to face, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your opinions to yourself and try to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a toy. They argued about it. But She finally agreed with him. Michael bought the toy, but only played it on certain days.
Of course, your parents might disagree with you on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect (尊敬) to them. It will help keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from yours. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is a pleasure to have a try!
