二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The United States government is back in business. Early Thursday morning, President Barack Obama signed a bill to reopen the government. The budget bill, drafted by Senate late on Wednesday night, raised the government’s debt ceiling and averted(避免)a serious economic crisis. “With the shutdown behind us,” Obama said after the Senate vote, “we now have an opportunity to focus on a sensible budget that is responsible, that is fair and that helps hardworking people all across this country.”

Now that a settlement has been reached, formerly furloughed(休假)employees have returned to work, national museums and parks are reopening, and the government’s gears are slowly beginning to turn again.

Before the shutdown, a federal funding bill went back and forth between the Senate and the House. A major issue was whether or not the government would pay for changes in Obama’s healthcare plan. The Senate, with a Democratic majority, wanted to pass a budget that would fund the new healthcare law. But the House, which has a Republican majority, did not want government money used that way. Because an agreement could not be reached on a budget plan, the government was forced to partially shut down.

Sixteen days later, the two sides have come together to pass a measure that raised the country’s debt ceiling. The debt ceiling is the strict legal limit Congress places on the amount of money that can be borrowed each year. Had this agreement not been met by October 17, the U.S. may not have been able to pay its promised payments. This legislation, or law, will fund the government through January 15. During this time, Obama and Congress will work on a long-term spending plan.

The effects of the two-week government shutdown were widespread. In addition to national parks, museums, memorials and monuments were off-limits to visitors. Workers at government-run organizations like NASA and the Environmental Protection Agency were furloughed. Part of the new legislation will pay back the 800,000 workers who were without pay during the shutdown.

Early Thursday, the Smithsonian Institution celebrated the government’s reopening on Twitter. “We’re back from the shutdown!” they wrote, announcing that museums would reopen Thursday and the National Zoo in Washington on Friday.

To the delight of many people, that also means the return of the zoo’s popular live Panda camera.

【1】What may have lead to the government shutdown?

    A. Economic crisis.

    B. The senate voting.

    C. Dispute on the budget bill.

    D. Lazy people across the country.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “two sides” in paragraph four refers to?

    A. The senate and the house.

    B. The senate and the president.

    C. The president and the congress.

    D. The legislator and the government.

【3】What can we learn about the U.S. Government from the shutdown?

    A. It is run by lazy workers.

    B. It is affected by different political forces.

    C. The people has no say in the decision making process.

    D. Obama decides whether his health care bill will be passed or not.

【4】In mentioning the live Panda camera, the author suggests that ______.

    A. zoos were government-run

    B. pandas were popular among the public

    C. the effects of the shutdown were widespread

    D. tourists were affected the most by the shutdown

  • 22、The driver who cuts you off in traffic. The neighbors who don't pick up after their dog.Situations such as these get our hearts racing and send our stress levels skyrocketing.Anger isn't a pleasant feeling. Some of us bottle up the emotion, while others explode in a wild rage (狂怒).Both habits do considerable harm to our bodies, our minds, and our relationships.

“Anger may fee1 uncomfortable and a lot of people think they have to get rid of their anger," says Patrick Keelan, a registered psychologist in Calgary, Alberta.“But anger is an emotion built into us to signal that something needs to be addressed. When we take notice of that signal and actually wrestle with the problem instead of turning a blind eye to it, we' re usually much better for it.”

Unfortunately, many of us have been conditioned to keep our emotions hidden.Increasingly, research is suggesting that this can have long-term effects on our health.Investigators at the University of Rochester noticed that people who contain their emotions tend to live shorter lives. When we're angry, stress hormones are released, which can make us more likely to develop a wide range of diseases, including diabetes, depression, immune related conditions.

Is it better, then, to scream and howl whenever something makes you mad? That's probably the reason why“rage rooms" have popped up in many American cities, where folks are invited to let steam off by violently smashing (打碎) stuff in a“safe" environment. However, the research indicates that when people display anger aggressively, it can actually increase the intensity of the anger -- and increase the likelihood of aggressive actions in the future. It doesn't take much imagination to predict how such behavior can affect your relationship with your spouse, your kids, or your colleagues. It also hurts your health.A large 2016 study at McMaster University found that people are more than twice as likely to have a heart attack after an angry explosion.

If we shouldn't bottle up our angry feelings but aggressive behavior isn't healthy either, how should we handle things that tick us of? It's the extreme highs and lows that cause the damage. If you're able to apply techniques that smooth out some of those peaks and valleys, you can have a gentler ride.

【1】What does the underlined phrase“bottle up" in paragraph 1 mean?

    A.Build up.

    B.Hold back.

    C.Let off.

    D.Bring out.

【2】What does Patrick Keelan think of anger?

    A.Uncomfortable and avoidable.

    B.Terrible and threatening.

    C.Confusing and complex.

    D.Normal and natural.

【3】What is the consequence of displaying anger aggressively?

    A.It leads to people's depression.

    B.It warns people against violence.

    C.It adds to people's anger.

D.It helps people to calm down.

【4】What will be talked about if the passage is continued?

    A.Possible causes of anger.

    B.Tips on handling anger.

    C.Possible harm of anger.

    D.Tips on avoiding anger.

  • 24、According to a survey, only 4% of the people in the world are left-handed. Why? One theory centers on the two halves of the brain. For example, the left half and the right half, each of which functions differently. Medical science believes that the left half of the brain dominates over the right half. The foundation of this theory is the fact that nerves from the brain cross over at neck-level to the opposite side of the body, and nerves from the other side of the brain reciprocate (互换). The end result is that the opposite sides of the body are controlled by the opposite sides of the brain.

The dominant left half of the brain, which kindly supplies the right half of the body, theoretically makes it more skillful in reading, writing, speaking, and working, and makes most people right-handed. Lefties, however, whose right half of the brain dominates, work best with the left side of their bodies.

Theory number two focuses on the asymmetrical nature of the body. Examples of the asymmetry, which flows from head to toe, are that the right side of our faces differs slightly from the left, that our legs differ in strength, or that our feet vary in size. One aspect of this asymmetry is that for most people the right hand is stronger than the left.

There is no doubt that all exist in a “right-handed society”, which produces most basics, including scissors, doorknobs, locks, screwdrivers, automobiles, buttons on clothing, and musical instruments for the 96%. Left-handed people make up for the unfairness by being members of an elite (精英) society, which includes many of the greatest geniuses, including Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.

【1】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Left-handed people are better at speaking

    B. Left-handed people are believed to have stronger left halves of the brains

    C. Right-handed people are cleverer than left-handed people

    D. Right-handed people work best with the right side of their bodies

【2】Which of the words or phrases is closest in meaning to the word “asymmetrical”?

    A. valuable       B. not typical

    C. not balanced   D. negative

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. Left-handed people may feel inconvenient in this right-handed society

    B. This is an equal society for the left-handed people

    C. Most great geniuses are left-handed

    D. Left-handed people are considered to be disabled

【4】 What’s the best title for the passage?

    A. Which proves to be the better way to live, right-handed or left-handed?

    B. How do left-handed people differ from right-handed ones?

    C. Why are some people left-handed?

    D. Are left-handed people equally treated in society?
