二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、In the early times, the music industry was terrified of taping, thinking that customers would just copy music,or record from the radio. But that never really happened,at least not enough to cause any real hardship to anyone in the music business.

The same argument arose over technologies like miniDisc and recordable CDs.But the thing that terrified the music industry more than anything else was the arrival of services like Napster, which allowed people to share music over the Internet without costing them anything. The music industry was shocked: it saw people exchanging digital copies that didn’t degrade(降级)with each transfer, something that kept tapes from being a huge threat.

But it wasn't the Internet that killed the music industry. In fact, everything is still looking optimistic for many musicians.Taylor Swift has had a good year, and her latest album is likely to be making her very wealthy indeed. And that won’t change in all likelihood, not for Swift, and not for those who come after her. There is always going to be public demand for music.

However, the technology will simply destroy the record company. The reason is simple.Record companies are a man in the middle that simply doesn’t need to exist anymore. The same way we buy our flights directly did get our shopping online and have things delivered from Amazon instead of going to a local shop.We have always been willing to enjoy cost reductions at the expense of the middleman and the record companies are that kind of middleman.

What does the record industry offer?Well, surprisingly little these days.It used to be the case that record companies would go and find new talents.Of course this still happens, but more likely is that an artist will be discovered by the public through YouTube,or even from friends on Facebook or Twitter.Record companies also used to have an important role in producing the music. But countless artists are making their own way through software or any of the other amazing music development apps, without any help from the record companies.

1Why didn’t tape copying become a serious danger to the music industry?

    A. It was hard to transfer.

    B. It was strictly controlled.

    C. It didn’t save much money.

    D. It was replaced by miniDisc and recordable CDs.

2The example of Taylor Swift is fused to prove that______.

    A. the demand for music is on the increase due to the Internet

    B. the sales of albums are badly affected by the Internet

    C. the Internet doesn’t have a destructive effect on the music industry

    D. the musicians make a great fortune via the Internet

3The record companies will suffer most because________.

    A. they are in the middle way and block the development of the music industry.

    B. the record industry can offer nothing to us

    C. people prefer to cut down the expenses at the cost of the record companies

    D. the public pa more attention to Facebook or Twitter

  • 27、If you could design your own school and study whatever you wanted, what would you choose to learn?

This isn’t an unlikely question for students at Monument Mountain Regional High School, who are taking part in an activity called the Independent Project. The program is a special school within the Massachusetts public high school that’s completely run by students - no teachers, parents, or adults are allowed - and they’re in charge of deciding their whole curriculum (课程).

These teens’ homework and what they study in the classroom are all totally up to them. Charles Tsai, a journalist, made a 15-minute film about the project that shows the wide variety of activities different students join.

Students aren’t taking this lightly - instead of reacting irresponsibly (不负责任地) to the freedom to design their own studies, they’re dealing with their own interests by writing poetry (诗歌) collections, learning instruments and taking flight lessons.

The program is this: On Mondays students come up with questions in relation to one of their school subjects, then they spend the rest of the week researching and coming up with possible conclusions to these questions. On Fridays, they present this information to their classmates.

“I think the more choices we have in our school, the more students we will help develop into the kind of citizens that we need,”Principal (校长) Marianne Young explains in the film.

In the video, teens express their satisfaction with the program because it holds different kinds of learners, even those who don’t always succeed in a traditional study situation.

“I have difficulty in reading and writing. School has always been a big problem for me,” one student named Sergio explains in the video. “If it were not for this program, I don’t know if I’d be graduating - I don’t know where I’d be right now. I think this has really been my savior (救星) and got me through the last two years of high school.”

【1】What is the Independent Project about?

    A.Various activities for students.

    B.Student-centered curricula.

    C.A self-designed school.

    D.Teacher-free classes.

    【2】How does the program work?

A.Teachers work out a curriculum for students.

B.Students research topics they put forward.

    C.Teachers work together with students.

D.Students serve as teachers in turn.

【3】What’s Marianne Young’s attitude towards the project?

    A.Curious.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Uncertain.

    D.Optimistic.

【4】What do we know about Sergio?

A.He finds it hard to graduate.

B.He has bitter memories of high school.

C.He feels grateful to the Independent Project.

D.He performs badly in the Independent Project.

  • 28、If you’re like most people, you’re too busy eating pizza to stop and consider how it arrived on your kitchen counter. 【1】 So why don’t pizzas arrive in round cardboard boxes?

It’s mostly because the pizza industry doesn’t really care to bother the cardboard industry. 【2】 That’s because they can be made in one piece as well as neatly piled.

The advantage of making a round pizza box would mainly be aesthetic (美感的). But it’s not going to save space over an edged box. 【3】 It’s just bad pizza management.

【4】 In the 1800s, street sellers carried pies in portable metal containers that kept them warm. When pizza started rising in popularity in postwar America, pizzerias used a single piece of cardboard as support and then slipped the pie into a paper bag. Eventually, corrugated (瓦楞纸的) cardboard struck a fine balance between retaining heat without tapping too much moisture.

Will we ever see a radical rethink of the pizza box? Some people have tried. In 2010, Apple fled for a patent for a round pizza container with holes so moisture can escape. It’s used in the company’s food courts. Another company, World Centric, designed a compostable round box in 2018 that can be used to reheat pizza. A similar product was test-marked by Pizza Hut in 2019. 【5】

A.The pizza box has changed over time.

B.Pizza wasn’t always attached to square cardboard.

C.Cardboard boxes are usually manufactured with edges.

D.If piled vertically (垂直地), pizzas run the risk of rolling out of place.

E.Pizza boxes are designed in square for the benefit of deliverymen.

F.Think it long enough, though, and you may find it curious that pies usually come in square or other boxes.

G.Although all of the designs were claimed to keep pizzas warmer and crispier for longer, none have become widespread.

  • 29、We often find ourselves struggling to control our thoughts, but why is it so hard to stop our minds wandering? Research found our thoughts are less focused and under less control than we realize. In a 1996 study, participants reported more than 4,000 thoughts daily, each lasting no more than five seconds. In a 1987 study, people regarded 22% of their thoughts as strange, unacceptable or wrong. Then, is it possible to avoid unwanted thoughts, whether it’s an upcoming exam or an unpleasant conversation? The answer is: maybe.

In a 2022 study, the researchers showed paid volunteers a series of slides displaying different nouns. Each noun was repeated on five different slides. As they viewed the slides, the participants wrote down a word they associated with each given noun — for example, “road” in response to “car.” Only the experimental group were told they wouldn’t get paid for repeated words. With this method, the researchers sought to create a situation when someone experiences unwanted thoughts.

When the experimental group saw each noun for a second time, they took longer than the control group to come up with a new association, suggesting their first response popped into their mind before they replaced it. However, they got quicker each time they viewed the same slide, indicating that their association between the given word and their first response — the thought they were trying to avoid — was weakening.

“We didn’t find evidence that people can entirely avoid unwanted thoughts,” said research leader Isaac Fradkin. “But the results suggest that practice can help people get better.”

Not everyone agrees that a slideshow of random words can tell how people stop emotional thoughts. Other research suggests that avoiding thoughts can backfire. When we do it, we’re sending our brains a message. This effort labels them as something to be feared, making them more powerful.

In the end, it might make more sense to take a mindful approach. “We can allow these thoughts to just be in our minds, not holding onto them too tightly and not trying to fight them,” said Fradkin.

【1】What can we learn about our thoughts from paragraph 1?

A.Most of our thoughts are valueless.

B.We tend to focus more on negative thoughts.

C.Our thoughts can occur and disappear easily.

D.We can’t keep our thoughts for over five seconds.

【2】Why were the experimental group told not to repeat the related words?

    A.To collect more associations.

B.To make the task more challenging.

    C.To create a competitive atmosphere.

D.To set up a desired experimental environment.

【3】What does the underlined word “backfire” mean in paragraph 5?

    A.Have an opposite effect.

    B.Take back the wrong message.

    C.Reveal hidden problems.

    D.Cause a mental breakdown.

【4】What does Fradkin advise us to do with unwanted thoughts?

    A.Drive them away.

    B.Try to understand them.

    C.Leave them alone.

    D.Learn to control them.

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、Directions:Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.

According to an official report on youth violence.“In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence.”Given that this is the case, why aren’t students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars, or stay physically fit?

First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. It is reported that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult. For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence.

If the conflict occurs, students can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution: stay calm.

Once the student feels calmer. Once the student feels calmer. He or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words and accusations only add fuel to the emotional fire while soft words can put out the fire before it explodes out of control.

After that, they can use another key strategy for conflict resolution. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side: and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterwards, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speaker’s position. Then the two people should change roles.

Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. An argument doesn’t mean trying to figure out the fault of the other person but means understanding what the real issue is. As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller.(280 words)
