  • 27、   Londoners are great readers. They buy large numbers of newspapers, magazines and books-especially paperbacks, which are still cheap in spite of ever-increasing rises in the costs of printing. They still continue to buy “proper” books, too, printed on good paper.

There are many streets in London containing bookshops. Perhaps the best known of these is Charing Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the famous one which is said to be “the biggest bookshop in the world” to the dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens’ time. Some of these shops stock or will make efforts to get any kind of books, but many of them specialize in second-hand books, in art books, in foreign books, in books on economics, politics or any other subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes only in books about ballet.

Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books, Charing Cross Road is not the cheapest. For really cheap second-hand books, collectors must go to Farringdon Road, in the East Central district of London. Here there is nothing so impressive as bookshops. The booksellers come along each morning and put lots of books onto small hand-carts (手推车) which line the streets. The collectors, some professionals and some amateurs (业余爱好者), who have been waiting for them, run quickly towards the books. In places like this one can still, sometimes, pick up for a few pence an old book that may be worth many pounds.

1“Londoners are great readers” means that _________.

A.Londoners are great because they read many books B.Only great readers live in London

C.Londoners are readers who read only great books D.Londoners read a lot

2According to this passage, Charing Cross Road ________.

A.is in the suburbs of London B.is famous for its bookshops

C.contains only big shops D.is the cheapest place for Londoners to buy books

3What do you know about Farringdon Road?

A.It is the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books.

B.Cheap second-hand books can be found there.

C.It is in the West Central district of London.

D.Few people like to buy books there.

4The best topic for this passage is “__________”.

A.bookshops in London B.the biggest bookshop in the world

C.Charing Cross Road D.Londoners are great readers

  • 28、   My notebooks and I are inseparable. Look inside, and you will find stories from a girl with a heart and a mind of her own. When I write, I create a world where I have complete control and can escape from the pressure of everyday life. My story ideas are so fluid that they can come at any time, so I always keep a notebook with me to record them.

I have been writing since the third grade when my teacher gave the class an assignment to write a short poem. My poem was called “Spring Time” and it was the first time I had discovered that writing my thoughts or feelings was good for me. It became my way to relax and to escape. I wrote every day and found myself more relaxed. In the fifth grade, my teacher “forced” us to keep a journal, but the requirement was not a problem for me since I was always writing. I wrote to entertain myself. I also wrote to rebel (反抗) whenever I was tired of having to become what society and the world around me expected me to be.

My stories have grown into books that I hope to publish. a major character turned up in my stories—Kasumi. She was the result of an innocent idea to be free from the restraints of the world around me. She says the things that I can’t say aloud. In her world, she easily faces and overcomes all difficulties. Kasumi is stubborn, fearless and brave. She also has a career and a family, which she holds together emotionally and physically, just as my grandmother has done.

My grandmother lives by a simple rule: if you don’t like something, open your mouth and say something about it. She does not limit her expressions because of society’s expectations. She sets an example to me and helps to define who I am as a young woman. In this way, my grandmother is reflected in Kasumi.

In the ninth grade, my ways of expression expanded into acting. Through acting, I have leaned how to communicate physically, verbally and emotionally. When I act, I am able to fall into the roles. Each role is a representation of me. I started acting with the role of Mrs. Fezziwig in A Christmas Carol. Two years later, I received my biggest part as a narrator (叙述着) in our production of Romeo and Juliet.

Through acting and writing. I have developed characters like the strong and outgoing women in my family. I have come to realize that writing and acting have helped me to become more independent and confident. Acting has increased my ability to work through the problems of everyday life.

On stage, the character’s feelings and problems become mine. Their voices are mine. The freedom of acting on stage has improved my writing, making me have the authority to create scenes that are more realistic. My stories in my notebooks are versions of the world around me that are enlarged by my imagination. I can break the limitation of reality by becoming a character on stage or entering a world I created in my notebooks. The authority I feel while playing a character on stage adds to my passion for excitement and adventure created in the universe of my notebooks.

1The author values her notebooks in that ________.

A.she likes writing all her secrets in the notebooks

B.she usually keeps her daily schedules in the notebooks

C.the notebooks provide her with a world where she can be herself

D.the notebooks have helped her form the habit of writing poems

2What can we know from the second paragraph?

A.The teacher was always hard on the students.

B.Becoming a famous poet is the author’s dream.

C.Some students found it difficult to keep a journal.

D.The author felt very stressed because of the teacher.

3What does the underlined word “restraints” probably mean in the third paragraph?

    A.limits B.desires C.promises D.experiences

4It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A.the life on stage is far away from reality

B.the author improved her writing through acting

C.the author is afraid to be faced with her real life

D.the characters on stage often make people con fused

  • 29、No trip to the beach would be complete without a group of hungry gulls. But be careful, because one of those gulls may soon go after your food. “There's a very small number of very daring individuals that seem to harm the reputation of the whole species.”

Neeltje Boogert, an animal behavior researcher at the University of Exeter, studied the food-snatching habits of gulls in seaside towns in the southern U.K. and found that very few-only the bravest, would actually take the food or make that the bite.

The experiment went like this: A researcher crouched near a gull, then set out a plastic bag of French fries. For those brave gulls that then started to approach, the researcher either stared straight at the gull, as in “I see you, thief,” or simply looked away. And it turned out, staring down at the gulls made them hesitate 21 seconds on average before approaching the fries.

Gulls aren't the only ones who behave better when being watched. A 2006 study found that people paid three times as much for their drinks at an unattended honor-system coffee bar when just an image of staring eyes was displayed nearby.

As for the gulls, Boogert points out that we need to learn to live with them—because the particular species she studied is on the U.K.'s Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern.

“The thing is: people don't want to have a seaside holiday without gulls there. So it's just trying to find ways to live together with one of the only wildlife species we still have around in these coastal areas.”

“So don't turn your back on the gulls,” she says. “Both seemingly for conserving the species and, of course, actually—for conserving your lunch.”

【1】What does the author want to say about gulls in Paragraph l?

A.People go to the beach mainly for the gulls.

B.People think highly of gulls' courage.

C.Gulls have a bad reputation for wasting food.

D.Gulls sometimes steal food from beach goers.

【2】What is the research method used by Dr. Boogert and her team?

    A.Doing experiments

    B.Completing questionnaires.

    C.Referring to documents.

    D.Making interviews.

【3】What does the underlined word “unattended” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Not being loved.

    B.Not being involved.

    C.Not being watched.

    D.Not being needed.

【4】What does Dr. Boogert mean in the last paragraph?

A.British people are fond of gulls.

B.British people care little about gulls.

    C.British people should protect gulls.

D.British people should be warned of gulls.
