二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   To grow sugary dates in the sand, Siwa’s farmers must first make the desert suitable for farming. An oasis (绿洲) in Egypt, Siwa has been home to humans for thousands of years. Since ancient times, the oasis has hosted farms producing some of the most valuable dates in Egypt, and sugary dates have appeared on Egyptians, tables.

The desert environment in Siwa is not quite fit for plants to grow. For example, the water there contains much salt. However, with local people’s efforts, the Siwa oasis contains complex agricultural fields, where date trees, crops and other plants grow in harmony. That impressed me a lot during my visit to the oasis. To make a new piece of field, farmers first remove the top soil and replace it with a mixture of sand and waste matter from animals. The first plants are medicinal plants. Then, farmers plant date trees and olive trees. These farming skills are passed down from generation to generation.

To grow date trees is demanding. And it takes 10 years for a new date tree to mature, but once it does, the tree produces generous fruit: around 110 pounds of dates per year. Each farmer picks dates with the skilled hands. They climb the trees using nothing more than a belt. In total, Siwa grows more than 25,000 tons of dates from 280,000 trees per year.

The dates can be eaten fresh, or made dry. Every part of the date tree is significant in Siwa, from leaves made into beds and boxes to wood used to build houses. And then, of course, there’s the fruit itself. The dates can be cooked with goat meat or mixed with eggs for breakfast. They can also be mixed with flour, water, and olive oil, and boiled slowly to make a local dessert.

Local farmers once developed many unique date varieties, which their camels carried to Cairo. But later many of those varieties perished. And today only several major varieties remain and some have become quite rare and been at risk. The 1985 construction of a road in the oasis made the survival of local agricultural tradition even tougher.

【1】What can we learn about sugary dates from Paragraph 1?

A.They can adapt to tough environment.

B.They have existed for a long time.

C.They’re introduced to Egypt from abroad.

B.It’s easy for farmers to pick dates from the trees.

C.It costs a lot to grow date trees in the basis.

D.It’s necessary to develop agriculture in Siwa.

    【4】What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?

    A.People’s preference for dates.

    B.The introduction to local food,

  • 27、Chocolate could soon be a thing of the past after scientists’ warning that the cacao (可可) plant, from which chocolate is made, could be extinct within 32 years.

Over half of the world’s chocolate comes from just two countries in West Africa — Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana — where the temperature, rain, and humidity (湿度) provide the perfect conditions for cacao to grow. But rising temperatures over the next three decades caused by climate change are expected to result in a loss of water from the ground, which scientists say could upset this balance.

According to the related data, a temperature rise of just 2.1℃ could put an end to the chocolate industry worldwide by 2050. Farmers in the region are already considering moving cacao production areas thousands of feet uphill into mountainous areas — many of which are currently preserved for wildlife. But this move could destroy the ecosystems that are already under threat from illegal farming and deforestation.

One of the problems, according to Doug Hawkins, is that cacao farming methods have not changed for hundreds of years. “Unlike other tree crops that have benefited from the development of modern, high yielding strains and crop management techniques to realize their genetic potential, more than 90% of the global cacao crop is produced by small farms with unimproved planting materials,” he said. “It means that we could be facing a chocolate decrease of 100,000 tons a year in the next few years.”

Now scientists at the University of California, Berkeley have cooperated with American candy company Mars to keep chocolate on the menu. Using the controversial gene-editing technology known as CRISPR they are trying to develop a type of cacao plant capable of surviving in dryer, warmer climates. If the team’s work on the cacao plant is successful, it could remove the need for farmers in West Africa to relocate to higher ground, and perhaps even allow cacao to be grown elsewhere in the world.

【1】What do we know about chocolate from the text?

A.Chocolate will disappear from the menu 30 years later.

B.Chocolate is mainly produced by African countries.

C.Chocolate will not be produced by 2050 because of climate change.

D.A new type of chocolate will be produced with the help of CRISPR.

【2】What is the reason for the probable extinction of the cacao plant?

    A.The damaged ecosystems.

B.Water shortage caused by climate change.

C.The threat from illegal farming and deforestation.

    D.The changeable farming method.

【3】What is the writer’s attitude to the application of CRISPR to develop a new type of cacao plant?

    A.Objective.

    B.Unconcerned.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Negative.

【4】Where does the passage probably come from?

    A.A poster.

    B.A leaflet.

    C.An advertisement.

    D.A magazine.

  • 28、Great whites and whale sharks are among the species at risk of extinction over the next century, a new study has found.

Pimiento is the lead author of a study published in Science Advances that looks at how the extinction of large marine species would impact the ecological roles of ocean ecosystems. “The extinction crisis challenges scientists to better measure biodiversity: how will the total variety of life on Earth be affected as human activities lead to the losses of more and more species?” they said. In the oceans, the biggest animals are thought to play crucial ecological roles, and are also facing high levels of threat from human activities such as fisheries and climate change.

The team was looking to move beyond traditional species extinctions, to find out more about the functional diversity, the range of roles that these species perform, and how biodiversity might respond under different extinction scenarios. They ran two different extinction scenarios. In one, researchers looked at extinction probability based on their current IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) status. In the second, they assumed all species listed as threatened, around 40 percent, had gone extinct.

Sharks were found to be one of the worst affected groups. “We already knew that sharks are one of the most threatened groups in the ocean,” they said. “They are also very vulnerable due to their large size and low reproductive rate. Our results show that future extinctions would be selective against the most functionally unique and specialized shark species, resulting in greater projected losses.” They also said the biggest threats to marine megafauna are fishing, either through accidentally getting caught up or directly targeted, and climate change. Mitigating these threats could be the best way to protect these species.

The good news is that the study identifies key species that can be targeted and protected. Sometimes ocean conservation can be a triage game. The science helps us know which species really need our help and which species we really cannot afford to lose.

    【1】What is Pimiento’s study about?

A.The possible threats of large marine animals.

B.The main cause of the extinction crisis in the sea.

C.The ecological role of large animals in the ocean.

D.The best way of balancing biodiversity with human acts.

【2】How did the team conduct its research?

    A.By checking current data.

    B.By predicting extinction rates.

    C.By measuring marine biodiversity.

    D.By analyzing traditional experiments.

【3】What does the study’s result show?

A.The risk of sharks reproducing in the ocean.

B.The solution to animals’ protection in the sea.

C.The influence of sharks’ extinction on the ocean.

D.The reason for sharks being hit hardest in the sea.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards the study?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Positive.

    C.Skeptical.

    D.Negative.

  • 29、Mrs. Janes gave music lessons at a school. She had a good voice and enjoyed singing, except that some of her high tones sound like a gate that had forgotten to oil. Mrs. Janes knew her weakness well, and took every chance she could find to practise these high notes. As she lived in a small house, where she could not practise without disturbing the rest of the family, she usually went for long walks along the country roads whenever she had time and practised her high notes there. Whenever she heard a car or a person coming along the road, she stopped and waited until she could no longer be heard before she started practicing again, because she was a shy person.

One afternoon, a fast, opened car came up behind her so silently and so fast that she didn't hear it until it was only a few yards from her. She was singing some of her highest and most difficult tones at that time and as the car passed; she saw an anxious expression came over the driver's face. He stopped his car suddenly, jumped out and began to examine all his tyres carefully. Mrs. Janes didn't dare to tell him what the noise he had heard really was, so he got back into the car and drove off.

B.Because she was afraid to disturb the rest of the family.

C.Because she lived in a small house far away.

D.Because she was afraid to practise the high tones.

【3】Why did the driver stop his car suddenly and jump out of it?
