28、Do you like to bury your head in a good book? Getting absorbed in a good story is a great way to relax. It improves your reading ability, and, according to some experts, it's good for your health as well. Studies show that it can increase our emotional intelligence as we understand a range of angles and motivations. But despite these benefits, does the way we consume a story make any difference?
For the purist(讲究规范的人), the only way to digest a good story is with a paperback or hardback book. But the traditional book has had a competitor in recent years from e-books, which are read on e-readers or tablets. An "electronic" book enables you to store hundreds of books in one place and allows you to download books directly.
The e-book has become popular in schools, too, and according to one school in London, it's encouraged more children to read. 11-year-old Summit told the BBC: "If you really want a book, you can just get it online. It's so easy, and it's made me read more. I probably read every day now." For adults, e-books are certainly a lightweight way of accessing our favourite literature on the move.
The recent lockdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic have certainly given us all time to read more. Last year, some 202 million paperbacks and hardbacks were sold, and the publishing industry hopes this trend will continue now that people have got into the habit of reading more.
But for those who can't or don't want to look at the text in a book, there are audiobooks to listen to. Some authors are even skipping print and writing audio content only. No matter what your reading preference, there's no doubt we have too many choices in how we read a good story.
【1】According to some studies, how can reading a book help us?
A.It can improve our understanding of angles and motivations.

D.It helps us digest a good story better by reading hardback books

B.paper books have to compete for market shares with e-books

【3】Which of the following hopes people will get more into the habit of reading a book?

B.The purists.
C.Parents and educators.
D.E-readers and tablet producers.

29、 Working hard comes naturally to me. The company I work for hired me as a claims researcher and in one year promoted me to head of the Northeast Region Follow-Up Team.
“When are you going to finish?” My husband Joe said as he climbed into bed. “In a few minutes,” I replied. My track record offered Joe little reason to believe me. Finishing was always just a moment or two away. Then after I knew he was sound asleep, I’d gather my paperwork and move to the kitchen table and work for a few more hours.
Somewhere along the way, I found my enthusiasm for living was replaced with hard boring work that robbed me of both peace and pleasure. As the company expanded, my responsibility grew heavier every day.
Resigning would end the madness and Joe encouraged me to do so daily “Just do it, Annie. Quit. You’re heading for a break down.”
One day an email appeared on my computer screen. When I opened it, the words “Administrative assistant for senior vice president” caught my eye. No, I thought. They’d think I was crazy. Who in their right mind would stop back to a secretarial position from a management position?
At home that evening my interest in the new job persisted. I had ten years of experience as an executive secretary long before I ever arrived at the company.
The next morning I told my boss I intended to apply for the job. “You’re in for a huge salary cut, and you’ll lose your bonus,” he said, “You’re a leader, Annmarie, not a follower. How is it that you think this makes any kind of sense? You’re crazy.”
“Not yet,” I said “But if I stay in this position much longer, I’m pretty sure I’ll end up that way.”
Admittedly, the manager of human resources was shocked too, but from a budgetary standpoint it’s hard to say no to someone who’s asking for a salary cut and a decrease in benefits. That’s pretty much a novelty(新鲜事) you don’t run into every day.
I closed the door to my office that last day with very few regrets about leaving my management position. By the end of my first day in the new position I knew I had made the right decision. No office, staff, salary, or bonus check can ever replace this new feeling of waking up every morning and actually wanting to go to work. When I leave at the end of the day, I take nothing with me but my desire to come back tomorrow knowing that I am respected and appreciated.
My husband always tells me I can’t put a price on peace of mind. It looks like my path to peace turned up none too soon!

It was somewhere between spring and summer, and my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then, I was 13 years old, and always felt unhappy with Mom. But I didn’t know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly fragrance(香味)filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom stopped the car. “What are you doing?” I shouted, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be trapped there, so far from home. But that wasn’t the case. My mom jumped out of the car, grabbing(抓)the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute,” she called back through the open windows.
I impatiently looked at the side of the road before finding a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, a little annoyed, as my mom reappeared ——empty- handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?” She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?” She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist (前台接待员).” “What?” She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven’t gotten any in a while.”
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again, “Did you leave your name?” To this, she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me.”
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn’t know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few people along the way.
