    Fast Best

Fast food doesn’t have to be junk food, as this café proves. Do you fancy (喜欢) a really good hamburger made with the best ingredients, or old-fashioned fish and chips fried to perfection, all on the table in super-quick time? Speed and quality are important here, and the prices aren’t bad either.

    Your Local Caff (小餐馆)

Remember when cafés served full English breakfasts—sausages (香肠), beans, fried bread, bacon (培根) and eggs — with a strong cup of tea? Well, this place still does and you can have your breakfast at any time you like during the day while you listen to your favorite songs from the 1980s.

    Last Days of the Raj

A centrally located Indian restaurant, perfect for eating before or after the cinema or a show. In summer enjoy your meal in the beautiful garden. The most popular dishes are lamb and chicken cooked with mild, medium or hot spices. For brave customers there is extra hot!

  • 27、At some point in the past nine months, I heard a teacher on Zoom say the name of one of my teenage twin boys during class attendance, but I did not hear my son respond. As I walked past him, I suggested that he should let the teacher know he was there.

“Mom!” my son said, perhaps a little more loudly than a mother would like, “I know how to do attendance!” He also suggested that I exit the room. Then came the voice of his teacher, “Hello, Mrs. Burdick. How are you?”

I had just become the subject of a COVID-specific story, precisely the kind I was seeking out as I reported on young people’s experience of this painful year for The New York Times Magazine.

Starting last fall, as a staff writer for the magazine, I followed a group of college students in Missouri, as they managed the trials of remote learning. Over time I started to understand emotional pain was the hallmark of the year for so many young people, a year in which remote learning robbed (剥夺) them of the very things they find especially rewarding—novelty, independence, bonding with friends.

I also knew that some of the young people had a hard time telling their parents just how much they were suffering. Young people know their parents want them to be happy, to thrive (茁壮成长); disappointing their parents was one more source of pain they were not sure if they could take on.

I felt fortunate that I was learning so much from the young people who could open up to me, a stranger located in a state far, far away. As I felt sad for them, I felt sad for my own children. And so I tried not to lecture them about trying harder. Because of the work I was doing on the phone with those students, I think I failed my boys a little bit less than I otherwise would have — and of all the gifts my work has given me, that might be the one for which I am the most grateful.

【1】How did the author’s son react to her reminder?

    A.He ignored it.

    B.He got a bit annoyed.

    C.He exited the room.

    D.He turned to his teacher.

【2】What did the author find out about the college students?

    A.They failed their parents.

    B.They struggled with emotional pain.

    C.They longed for well-deserved rewards.

D.They asked for emotional support from their parents.

【3】For what did the author feel most grateful?

A.Educating her teenagers to try harder.

B.Learning to listen to her children.

C.Having a chance to talk to strangers far away.

    D.Getting to understand her boys.

【4】What can we infer about the author?

    A.She teaches in Missouri.

    B.She is a better-known writer now.

    C.She changed for the better.

    D.She was carefree and tolerant.

  • 28、Even if the world makes it hard to relax, we all need to find a way to reset and recharge. We go through life thinking we’ve rested because we have gotten enough sleep―but in reality we are missing out on the other types of rest we desperately need. Saudra Dalton-Smith, a physician, outlines different types of rest that are essential for human growing.

    Physical rest

This is the usual definition of rest were a familiar with. But while we know we need to spend a decent number of hours in bed to stay healthy, a steady persistent support of studies shows a large proportion of us still don’t get enough physical rest.

    Mental rest

Always have a tornado of thoughts spinning in your head from the moment you wake up to the moment you finally fall asleep? You need more mental rest, and even if you sleep a solid eight hours a night, you’re not going to feel fully recharged until you get it.

“The good news is you don’t have to quit your job or go on vacation to fix this. Schedule short breaks to occur every two hours throughout your workday these breaks can remind you to slow down. You might also keep a notepad by the bed to write down any painful thoughts that would keep you awake,” suggests Dalton-smith.

    Sensory rest

Staring at screens all day and all night means your eyes never get a proper rest, but this isn’t the only reason many of us never give our senses a break. Noisy cites, sharp sound announcements and loud music all contribute to constant sensory stimulation. Your brain needs a rest now and again. Consciously close your eyes and give yourself the gift of silence for short periods throughout the day.

    Emotional rest

This “means having the time and space to freely express your feelings and cut back on people-pleasing,” Dalton-smith explains. “Emotional rest also requires the courage to be genuine. An emotionally rested person can answer the question, ‘How are you today?’ with a truthful ‘I’m not okay’, and then go on to share some hard things that otherwise go unsaid.”

In other words, we all need the space to stop pretending for ourselves and others and get real about our feelings.

【1】Which of the following statement is true about the types of rest mentioned in the passage?

A.Physical rest means lying in bed for a proper period and exercising.

B.Mental rest indicates resting every two hours when you’re working.

C.Sensory rest means keeping silent frequently and staring at screens.

D.Emotional rest means pretending to share private affairs with others.

【2】What type of rest do you need most if you’re working with a computer in an office?

    A.Physical rest

    B.Mental rest

    C.Sensory rest

    D.Emotional rest

【3】It can be concluded that if a person feels tired, he should_________.

A.try to identify just what sort of rest he’s lacking exactly

B.spend some time with those who can energize him

C.have the four types of rest mentioned in the passage in order

D.have a need to feel connected to something larger than himself

  • 29、   Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder who became a millionaire after founding technology companies, experienced a long line of university dropouts(退学者)as we all know, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs among them. But 12 years after leaving Harvard to work on Facebook full time, he returned to pick up his degree finally.

Zuckerberg founded what was then called “The Facebook” in his college dormitory (宿舍) in 2004. At that time, the service was at first offered only to Harvard students before bringing it to other Ivy League (常春藤联盟) universities. Zuckerberg made the university’s graduation speech later on Thursday. After receiving the honor for the degree, he posted a photo of him with his parents and Mark Zuckerberg realized his parents’dream with a Harvard degree.

During his speech on Thursday, Mr Zuckerberg told graduates that everybody lived in a changeable time. With his wife, Priscilla, in the audience (听众), he pointed to the dormitory where he founded Facebook and added that meeting her there was the best thing to happen to him at the university.

Zuckerberg returned to the room where he built Facebook along with his partners, Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum and Chris Hughes. Even after the company moved its head office to California, Zuckerberg continued to be a student at Harvard until he dropped out in November, 2005. “I’m not coming back,” he told the university paper “The Crimson”.

His honorary degree comes 12 years later, a little quicker than Bill Gates, another famous Harvard dropout, to get his. Gates, who left to found Microsoft in 1975, did not receive his honorary degree until 2007. Last week, Zuckerberg shared a video of him finding out he had been accepted into Harvard. At that time he was just a young man who was going to step into one of the best universities around the world and he didn’t know who he would be in the future at all.

    A.Officers in Gates’ company.

    B.Some Zuckerberg’s friends.

    C.The students in Harvard.

    D.Students in Ivy universities.

A.Having the idea of founding a company.

B.Dropping out of the best university.

    C.Living in the special dormitoiy.

    D.Meeting his wife Priscilla.

【3】What can we know about Zuckerberg in the passage?

A.He was in the same class with Steve Jobs.

B.After twelve years’ leaving, he graduated from Harvard.

C.He became rich for selling some technology firms.

D.He founded Facebook after his graduation.

【4】What can be the best title for the passage?

A.Zuckerberg and his late Harvard degree

B.Zuckerberg, the special teacher for life

C.Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Jobs’ influence
