二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Do you want a bit of an adventure? Would you like to discover all the corners of the UK, or travel abroad? Maybe you have never tried the motorhome lifestyle before. Well, read this article and you will know why a motorhome is a good choice.

Nothing is better than a motorhome. It has so many uses that it is considered the most versatile vehicle and it is also very comfortable. If you are thinking about hiring a motorhome this summer, then the best choice is to book it early, especially if you are considering the school holidays. The motorhome hire service is very seasonal and motorhome hire companies will never have extra vehicles available in the summer months.

There are a lot of companies throughout the UK, and some of the big ones have motorhomes spread all over the country. At present, the largest network for motorhome hire is provided by Motorhome which is based in Cambridge. If you are in the UK, you may phone 0800612-8719 for details of its motorhome hire information. Motorhome has a network of over 500 vehicles all over England, Scotland and Wales.

Most people wishing to hire a motorhome are families that are looking for an alternative to a European package holiday, especially as flying now has become more expensive, and is considered to be environmentally unfriendly. There is no doubt that the idea of no-fly holidays is going to become more popular as fewer people think it is safe to fly. This explains why more and more people are choosing to hire a motorhome for their holidays.

  • 27、Time spent with friends in childhood is associated with physical health in adulthood, according to data from a multi-decade study of men. The findings show that boys who spent more time with friends as children tended to have lower blood pressure and lower Body Mass Index (体重指数) as men in their early 30s. “These findings suggest that our early social lives may have a small protective influence on our physical health in adulthood, and that it’s not just our caregivers or financial circumstances, but also our friends that may be health protectors,” says psychological scientist Jenny Cundiff.

“Although this wasn’t an experiment, it was a well-controlled longitudinal (纵观的) study with a racially diverse sample. It provides a strong clue that being socially integrated early in life is good for our health independent of a number of other factors such as personality and weight in childhood,” professor Karen Matthews of the University of Pittsburgh explains.

In many previous studies, researchers found an association between adults’ social well-being and health-related outcomes. Cundiff wondered whether this association might be evident much earlier in life, in childhood and adolescence (青春期).

To find out, Cundiff turned her attention to the longitudinal Pittsburgh Youth Study. Specifically, she looked into the information and facts about 267 individuals in Pittsburgh public schools. The participants’ parents reported how much time their children spent with their friends during an average week, beginning when the boys were about 6 years old and continuing through age 16. Analyses revealed that hoys who spent more time with their friends in childhood and adolescence had healthier blood pressure and BMI at 32. This association held even after Cundiff accounted for other potential influences, including physical health in childhood and social integration in adulthood.

The study included only one measure of social integration and did not include specific measures of physiological processes or organic function. Cundiff notes that expanding the range of measures used in future research could help to clarify the pathways linking early peer (同龄人) relationships with physical health decades later.

【1】What conclusion does Jenny Cundiff draw from the study?

A.Boys tend to spend more time with friends in childhood.

B.Boys are generally more protective as a member of society.

C.Childhood friendships may have health benefits in adulthood.

D.Childhood experiences make a difference to one’s personality.

【2】How does Karen Matthews like the findings?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Inspiring.

    C.Experimental.

    D.Reasonable.

【3】What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The field and focus of the study.

B.The course and result of the study.

C.The organizer and subject of the study.

D.The purpose and significance of the study.

【4】What’s the limitation of the study?

    A.Being short of sufficient samples.

B.Not involving men from diverse backgrounds.

    C.Lacking multi-dimensional evaluation.

D.Not expanding the range of early peer relationships.

  • 28、In today’s society, language plays a key role in defining gender (性别) by vocabulary, and also their non-verbal vocabulary. Each one of these different types of ways of communicating is obviously different between men and women.

Many different studies show that men tend to talk much more than women. It has also been proven that women tend to speak faster than men; this is due to the fact that women tend to be interrupted more often than men are, and also have the ability to speak more clearly, precisely and quickly than men. In one study it was found that women spoke for an average of three minutes describing a painting, as opposed to the thirteen-minute average it took men to describe it.

Men and women also tend to have a very different non-verbal way of communicating, which can also make it very hard for one another to understand what the opposite sex is trying to say. Men’s body language is much more reserved when talking to women. Men tend not to make as much eye contact, and they generally stay farther away from women when talking to them. Men avoid other people’s body space while talking, and they also tend to sit back when talking. All of these have given off the impression of disinterest or boredom. Women are by far better listeners and much more enjoyable to talk with and they tend to raise more topics for conversation.

Women also make it clearer whether or not the conversation is going somewhere or just stuck in neutral(中立). After learning about our styles of communicating with each other, I have decided that although men have not quite mastered communicating, what fun would it be if we all spoke the same “language”? The little games men and women play with each other while conversing would be lost. The question everyone asks himself or herself after talking with someone of the opposite sex, “I wonder if there’s something there?” would no longer exist.

【1】What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.The differences between men’s and women’s languages.

B.The different speed of men’s and women’s speech.

C.The ability of men’s and women’s spoken language.

D.The non-verbal vocabulary of men and women.

【2】In what way do men and women differ according to the third paragraph?

    A.Speed of understanding.

    B.Understanding of speech roles.

    C.Politeness of communication.

    D.Application of body language.

【3】What is the author’s attitude to the differences between men’s and women’s communication?

    A.Cautious.

    B.Favorable.

    C.Uncertain.

    D.Skeptical.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Women, born excellent talkers

    B.Men’s and women’s social roles

    C.Vocabulary and communication

    D.Opposite gender, different languages

  • 29、American football was the fastest-growing sport for US young players last year, according to a survey sponsored by the sport's governing body.

But it was the game's no tackle variety that showed the biggest increase-a finding that may reflect concerns about injury. In American football, a tackle (抢断球) refers to an attempt to stop an opponent by forcing them to the ground.

The number of participants in football grew in 2015 while most other sport, except baseball, posted a decline, USA Football said on Monday, citing(引用) the findings of a survey of 30,000 children and teenagers.

Participation in flag football (a no-tackle type of football) increased by 8.7 percent among children aged 6 to 14, while tackle football rose by 1.9 percent. For that age group, the only other sport that grew was baseball, with a 3. 3 percent increase.

In the 15-to-18 age group, flag football rose by 10. 5 percent, while tackle grew by 2.5 percent.

Basketball was the third, with a 1. 1 percent increase. Participation in all other sports declined.

Tom Farrey, executive director of the Aspen Institute's Sports & Society Program, said he was surprised that flag football participation rose so much.

“The trend suggests that parents are marching to the beat of a different drummer, in pursuing flag as an alternative for their kids," he said.

The findings come at a time of increasing concern about the risk associated with youth sports, particularly hockey (曲棍球) and football, where medical researchers have warned about the risk of concussions (damages to the brain caused by violent blows to the head) and death linked to brain injury.

USA Football, an Indianapolis, Indiana based nonprofit funded in part by the National Football League, believed that the increases resulted from better safety and health education.

"Football participation increases, even modest increases, may signal that programs such as our Heads Up Football program and practice guidelines are making a positive difference," said Scot Hallenbeck, USA Football chief executive, in a statement.

Robert Cantu, a Boston University neurosurgery professor and investigator at the school's chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) Center said the increase in fag football participation signaled that more parents were directing children to a safe alternative

【1】What can we learn about the two age groups?

A.Flag football grew the fastest in the 6-to-18 group.

B.Tackle football grew he fastest in the 6-to-14 group.

C.Participation in baseball declined the most in both groups

D.Participation in tackle football increased the most in both groups.

【2】The underlined part probably means ________.

    A.working at a different pace

    B.behaving in a different way

    C.ignoring the major differences

    D.trying to accept different opinions

【3】The popularity of flag football is inked with the fact that

A.its rules have been adapted for young players

B.it receives more funds than other varieties

C.tackle football is an old-fashioned game

    D.experts worry about children's safety

【4】What is the cause of football growth according to USA Football?

    A.Their safety programs are successful.

B.More children show interest in the game.

C.Football is less likely to cause concussions.

D.There are different types of football to choose from.
