26、 Everyone knows you must exercise regularly to keep good health. Indeed, staying physically fit is a big part of our culture. We consider (or rightly so) that healthy people are attractive people. Since most of us want to be attractive, there is no shortage of exercise clubs, training videos, magazines and books offering to help us stay physically fit.
Unfortunately, however, our culture doesn’t place the same emphasis on mental fitness. Although we tend to like men and women with strong, healthy-looking bodies, we don’t have the same degree of respect or attraction for smart, educated, mentally healthy people. This is a pity, because there are great rewards for people who have developed the ability to think well.
If your mind is well trained and flexible, you will be able to understand a great deal of what happens around you. And if you are also well educated-that is, if you understand basic science, mathematics, music, art, literature, history and so on—you will find it much easier to make good decisions throughout your life. Over the long run, this leads to a sense of control over your destiny (命运) and a much better life than otherwise (in another way).
People who are poorly educated or who don’t think well—that is, people who are not mentally fit—see things differently. Their world is controlled by mysterious, often malevolent (恶意的) forces. Such people live within a system they will never master, forced to follow rules they will never understand. Although it may not be obvious, most spend their lives being manipulated (控制) by others. They are told what to do, what to think, how to spend their money, and what they should and should not aspire (渴望) to in life.
In my opinion, if you want to live well, you must be able to use your mind well. For this reason, I want you to be able to concentrate, to solve problems, to understand complex ideas, and to think clearly and quickly. Such skills will make it easier for you to make informed decisions, understand current events, choose good friends, manage your money well, make wise long-term decisions and appreciate music, art and literature.
The key to developing such skills is to enjoy learning, and to have the ability and motivation to teach yourself.

27、Gene Wolfe is one of the most admired and respected American science fiction and fantasy writers. He is also a productive writer of outstanding short fiction, which is collected in many volumes over the last forty years, most recently in The Best of Gene Wolfe.
Although Wolfe is not as well-known to readers as he once was, he has been the receiver of great praise, including three World Fantasy Awards, two Nebulas, and eight Hugo Award nominations (提名). Sci-fi author Harlan Ellison has called him, “no less than one of the finest, most original writers in the world today”, and the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction names him “quite possibly the most important” writer in the field of science fiction.
Born in 1931, New York, Gene Wolfe moved frequently as a child, but spent most of his growing-up years in Texas. Wolfe began writing fiction in 1956, selling his first story,T he Dead Man, to Sir magazine in 1965. He produced a vast amount of short fiction during the 1960s and 1970s, many of which were published in Damon Knight’ s Orbit anthologies. In 1972 Wolfe’ s groundbreaking The Fifth Head of Cerberus appeared. The story of human conquest (征服) upon two distant planets, the book examines issues of identity, individuality, and the results of colonialism (殖民主义) upon both the colonised and the colonizer. The novel was later listed in David Pringle’ s 1985 list of The 100 Best Novels in science fiction for the period 1949-1984.
Many of his novels, The Shadow of the Torturer included, rely on a diary or letter to tell his story. In addition, Wolfe’ s early interest in mystery novels shines through in his ability to drop cleverly hidden clues that allow the readers to grasp at the possible narrative behind the narrative.
By 1984 Wolfe was able to retire and devote himself full-time to his writing. Yet despite (尽管) all this, and despite the continuing respect of his colleagues, his work has become somewhat unfamiliar. Wolfe’ s admirers hope this fact will be at least somewhat improved by his most recent offering, The Wizard Knight, which falls within the fantasy type that is currently popular.

28、Everyone loves a holiday! A little time off for some much-needed R& R (rest and relaxation) can be exactly the thing to rejuvenate and refresh you from work. So if you’re struggling to think of your next destination, then look no further. Don’t waste time debating where to go, but let your blood decide.
Everybody has a lineage (家系). Recently, finding out more about our family origins has become popular. By the start of 2019, 26 million people had taken an ancestry DNA test at home, according to a report by MIT Technology Review. They believe by 2021 this number will have risen to 100 million.
This trend has been noticed by opportunistic travel operators. Some are looking to provide a service that allows people to both track their family roots and travel to the destinations where their ancestors originated.
Airbnb, an online boarding marketplace, recently partnered with 23andMe, a DNA testing company, to offer recommendations that encourage travellers to walk in the footsteps of their forefathers. And they aren’t the only ones.
The Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin has its own“genealogy butler (宗谱管家)”. Hellen Kelly offers advice to help guests track their Irish lineage using official records. This allows them to “fill in the blanks of their Irish ancestry”, she told Good Morning America.
The Conte Club, a luxury travel company, offers custom routes of travel based on DNA tests. “These experiences are about going deeper into who we really are,” says the Conte Club CEO Rebecca Fielding in an article in the Condé Nast Traveler. “It might be the most meaningful trip we can take.”
So next time you think of going on vacation, why not take a DNA test first? Once you know how far you are from your family, take time to holiday back.

29、A description of the threat hanging over the world’s mammals, reptiles, amphibians and other life forms has been published by the well-known scientific journal, Nature. A special analysis carried out by the journal indicates that an astonishing 41% of all amphibians on the planet now face extinction while 26% of mammal species and 13% of birds are similarly threatened.
In each case, the finger of blame points directly at human activities The continuing spread of agriculture is destroying millions of hectares of wild habitats every year, leaving animals without homes, while the introduction of newly-come species, often helped by humans, is also damaging native populations. At the same time, pollution and overfishing are destroying ocean ecosystems.
“Habitat destruction, pollution or overfishing either kill off wild creatures and plants or leave them badly weakened,” said Derek Tittensor, an ocean ecologist at the World Conservation Monitoring Centre in Cambridge. “The trouble is that in coming decades, the additional threat of worsening climate change will become more and more common and will then kill off these survivors.”
The problem, according to Nature, is worsened because of the huge gaps in scientists’ knowledge about the planet’s biodiversity. Evaluations of the total number of species of animals and plants alive vary from 2 million to 50 million. In addition, evaluations of current rates of species’ disappearances vary from 500 to 36,000 a year. “That is the real problem we face,” added Tittensor. “The scale of uncertainty is huge.”
In the end, however, the data indicate that the world is heading cruelly towards a mass extinction — which is defined as one involving a loss of 75% of species or more. This could arrive in less than a hundred years or could take a thousand, depending on extinction rates.

【4】What does “This” in the last sentence refer to ______?
