二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Another horrible shooting took place in the United States on Tuesday just days after the one in Buffalo, New York. The shooter shot his grandmother first and then killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school in the city of Uvalde, Texas.

Speaking on Tuesday night from the White House, US President Joe Biden said, “And we must ask when in God’s name will we do what needs to be done to, if not completely stop, fundamentally change the amount of carnage that goes on in this country. It’s time for action.”

Yes, it is high time that action was taken to stop such carnage. In 2012, a lone gunman went crazy through Sandy Hook primary school — killing six adults and 20 children. Afterward there were loud calls for gun control similar to those being voiced today. Former president Barack Obama has tried to do everything to act and the Democrats proposed enhancing background checks. Some of the measures received Republican support, but it proved impossible to get them through Congress and into law.

Something is so clearly wrong with the political system in the US that such a popular move cannot be carried out. Almost 20 million guns were sold legally in the US in 2020, and the figure was nearly 19 million in 2021. The total economic value of the gun industry in the US increased from $19.1 billion in 2008 to $63.5 billion in 2019, a 232-percent increase, according to a report by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. The gun industry paid nearly $7 billion in business taxes.

With the huge interests behind the gun industry, it would be naive to believe that any effective action will ever be possible to put people’s lives first. When in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun gun control? Not until the political system in the US is reformed to treat its disorder.

【1】Which one of the following statements is True?

A.The latest shooting mentioned in this article happened in Buffalo, New York.

B.A gunman went crazy through Sandy Hook primary school, only killing adults.

D.The gun industry don’t pay any business tax.

【2】What does the underlined word “carnage” mean in the first paragraph 3?

    D.disorder

【3】What is the author’s attitude to the effect of the US future gun control?

    A.Confident

    D.Doubtful

    【4】What is the text?

    A.A news report

  • 28、After his father was rushed to hospital for an operation, 18-year-old Yanatha Desouvre began to panic. So he did the one thing chat he knew would calm himself—writing.

“I'm so seared,” he started. “I don't know what I'll do if I lose my dad.” Over the next few weeks, Desouvre filled several notebooks writing about his worry as well as his happy memories with his dad - the jokes they'd shared, the basketball games they'd watched and so on. Some times Desouvre cried as he wrote. Often he laughed. “Writing allowed me to face my fear and my pen was a tool to reduce the pain,” says Desouvre.

He is not alone. A lot of research shows benefits of writing about a painful experience or difficult situation in a manner that psychologists refer to as “expressive writing”. They say it can strengthen the immune(免疫)system, help reduce pain, and improve mood, sleep and memory.

When asked about his first writing, Desouvre says it was when he was 12, he survived a shooting in a barber shop in Brooklyn. After it he had nightmares about it over the years, so he started writing about it, then kept going. It helped. He say, “You can't keep things bottled up; it will make you sick.”

Now he thinks of his expressive writing as a recording of what happened and what he's learned. He always starts with “the tough stuffs” and then writes about how he's grown from the experience. Last year, he wrote in a notebook, recording the stress of his study. But he's also written about what he has pained: being stronger. “My expressive writing gave me the courage to face ray fears,” Desouvre says. “And I believe it has helped me discover the hope I need to heal.”

【1】What happened to Desouvre when his father was sent to hospital?

A.He was so frightened that he did nothing.

B.He watched a basketball game with his father.

C.He called his mother to tell her his father's illness.

D.He recorded something to free himself from anxiety.

【2】What benefit can a person get from expressive writing?

    A.More experience.

    B.A good manner.

    C.A better memory.

    D.Different mood.

【3】Why did Desouvre begin his first writing?

    A.To recover from a shooting.

    B.To become a famous writer.

C.To keep his secret of being sick.

D.To get rid of a terrible experience.

【4】What does Desouvre regard expressive writing as?

A.A recording of gains and losses.

    B.A willingness to become stronger.

C.A great tool to deal with difficult problems.

D.A good way to react properly to an accident.

  • 29、   Three very strong women-my mother, my grandmother, and Melinda-deserve big credit(赞扬) for helping me become the man I am today. But Blanche Caffiere, a very kind librarian and teacher I've never written about publicly before, also had a huge influence on me.

When I first met Mrs. Caffiere, she was the elegant and engaging school librarian at Seattle's View Ridge Elementary, and I was a shy fourth grader. I was desperately trying to go unnoticed, because I had some big deficits, like terrible handwriting and a killingly messy desk. And I was trying to hide the fact that I liked to read something that was cool for girls but not for boys.

Mrs. Caffiere took me under her wing and helped make it okay for me to be a messy, nerdy boy who was reading lots of books

She pulled me out of my shell by sharing her love of books. She started by asking questions like, "What do you like to read?" and "What are you interested in?" Then she found me a lot of books-ones that were more complex and challenging than the Tom Swift Jr. science fiction books I was reading at the time. For example, she gave me great biographies she had read. Once I'd read them, she would make the time to discuss them with me. She sincerely listened to what had to say. Through those conversations about books in the library and in the classroom we became good friends.

Looking back on it now, there's no question that my time with Mrs. Caffiere helped spark my interest in libraries (Melinda's and my first large-scale effort in philanthropy(慈善)) and my focus on helping every child in America get the benefit of great teachers. It's remarkable how much power one good person can have in shaping the life of a child.

1We can learn from the passage that the author was_______ before he met Mrs. Caffiere.

A.an average student. B.not able to read and write.

    C.hated by other boys D.not self-confident

2What does the underlined word deficits in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?

    A.Accidents. B.Strengths.

    C.Problems. D.Concerns.

3Mrs. Caffiere helped the author by______.

    A.sharing reading reflections with him.

B.telling him he was mot messy boy.

    C.hiding him in the library.

    D.listening to his complaint.

4What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.The author's interest in libraries.

    B.Mrs. Caffiere's influence on the author's life.

C.The author's achievements later in his life.

D.The importance of a good person in society.
