  • 26、If you’re interested in staying healthy as you age — and living longer — you might want to add a different set of muscles to your workout routine; your creative ones.【1】. And studies show that participating in activities such as singing, theater performance and visual artistic skill could support the well-being of older adults, and that creativity, which is related to the personality of openness, can lead to greater longevity (寿命).

    Think—and travel—outside the box

“People who travel tend to be more creative,” said Darya Zabelina, a psychology professor at the University of Arkansas. Traveling encourages people to reexamine their models of reality. Some studies show that travelers have more creative success, and that people who enjoy unfamiliar experiences perform better on open-ended questions calling for many ideas. 【2】.

    【3】

Generating ideas is one part of the creativity, but knowledge is required to identify the ones that will work. Even if mental speed declines, a person’s base of knowledge is well-preserved as it expands over time.

“You have more to draw on,” said Nye, who thinks her creativity improved when she reached her 60s.

    Mine adversity (逆境)

  • 27、Scott and Daniel Harry are enjoying everyday tasks like shopping and washing for the first time following their move to an accommodation (住宿) support house in Kurwongbah, north of Brisbane last year.

Disability Services Queensland’s Strengthening Non-Government Organisations project provided an accommodation support model that would enable residents (居住者) like Daniel and Scott to live more independently.

The house is just one of many accommodation support services funded (资助) through the project. The five-bedroom house provides 24-hour care for up to four individuals with complex needs, including medical support. Care and staffing levels are varied and flexible, depending on each resident’s requirements.

Scott and Daniel, who have a severe form of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, require 24-hour support in all activities of daily living. Before they moved to the house, they lived with their family. Scott says living at home was difficult as it placed a physical and emotional strain (负担) on their parents who had to wake them several times each night to reposition them or place them on breathing machines.

“We were heavyhearted,” says Scott, who is planning to write a book about his life experiences. “But our parents now have a lot more time for themselves. We now manage ourselves on a day-to-day basis.”

Daniel is an enthusiastic gardener, taking care of his own vegetable garden. The men share the house with one other young man, and they go to rugby league games, meeting up with friends.

Leeding Care Australia provides the care service at Kurwongbah. Manager Lee Garniss says setting up the facilities (设施) has not been without its challenges.

“It is an unconventional model of care,” Lee says. “The home is Scott and Daniel’s home, however it is also a workplace for their support staff. Balancing these two requirements has been a challenge for all.”

“We have experienced a bit of a learning phase over the last twelve months. However, by working as a team we try our best to meet the needs of both residents and staff and I think we have achieved the right balance.”

【1】What do we know about the house Scott and Daniel live in now?

A.It was built by their parents.

    B.It can accommodate four residents.

C.It belongs to a governmental project.

D.It’s located in the center of Brisbane.

【2】Why did Scott and Daniel’s parents wake up frequently at night?

    A.To help them do exercise.

B.They were making a lot of noise.

    C.To check on their breathing.

    D.They were under emotional pressure.

【3】How did Scott feel while living with his parents?

    A.A bit guilty.

    B.Quite happy.

    C.Very proud.

    D.Slightly angry.

【4】What was a challenge while setting up the facilities?

    A.Lack of fund.

    B.No workplace.

    C.Inexperienced staff members.

D.Satisfying both staff and residents’ needs.

  • 28、   Why can people speaking the same language have such different accents? The short answer new accents begin to develop when isolated(隔绝的) groups of speakers start making nearly unnoticeable changes to the way they pronounce words.

“Accent development is the first step in language change. Fifteen hundred years ago, languages like English, Dutch and Swedish were actually all dialects of the same language, but of course then they changed overtime.” Jonathan Harrington, a linguist(语言学家) in University of Munich, is interested in how accents first get started. But because of global communication, most communities are no longer linguistically isolated, and recording equipment didn't exist back when more of them were.

So how to capture the early stages of accent formation today? Harrington and his team turned to members of the British Antarctic Survey, who speak with a variety of English accents. “When you are in Antarctica during the winter period, there is no way in and no way out. So they were isolated together and they had to communicate and cooperate with each other.” Harrington's team recorded the winterers reciting a list of words before they left for Antarctica. Then, while there, the winterers recorded themselves saying the same words four more times. The linguists then analyzed the recordings.

Even during their short time in Antarctica, the way the winterers produced certain vowels (元音) began to converge. For example, at the beginning of the study, some people produced the /u/ in “food” at the front of the mouth while others used the back of the mouth. But they began to sound more similar overtime.

Harrington says the research isn't just relevant for understanding Earth's colonial past. He thinks there's every reason to expect long isolation will cause astronauts on Mars missions to end up with an outofthis world accent.

1What makes it hard to know how accents first started?

A.The lack of recordings in the past.

    B.The isolation of most communities.

C.The fast development of new accents.

D.The big number of dialects of the same language.

2What does the underlined word “converge” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Become simpler.

    B.Become similar.

    C.Get worse.

    D.Get improved.

3What may happen to astronauts returning from the Mars after a long stay there?

A.They feel much lonelier than ever before.

B.They can't understand their mother tongue.

C.They speak with accents quite different from the locals'.

D.They don't have any difficulty adjusting to the life on Earth.

    4Where is text probably from?

    A.A guide book.

    B.A news report.

    C.A magazine.

    D.A history book.

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

The Internet E-commerce and globalization are making a new economic age possible. In the future, capitalist markets will largely be replaced by a new kind of economic system based on 1 relationships, contractual arrangements and access rights.

Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? I have asked this question of hundreds of CEOs and corporate executives in Europe and the United States. Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 2.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 3 supporting.

The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 4 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 5.

If an earlier generation was preoccupied with the quest to enclose a vast 6 land, the .com generation, it seems, is more caught up in the colonization of time. Every spare moment of our time is being filled with some form of commercial connection, making time itself the 7 of all resources.

And while we have created every kind of labor-and time-saving device to service our needs, we are beginning to feel like we have less time available to us than any other humans in history. Maybe we need to ask what kinds of connections really 8 in the e-economy age. If this new technology 9 is only about super efficiency, then we risk losing something even precious than time-our sense of what it means to be a(n) 10 human being.

There was a rich couple who was throwing a big New Year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and fixed price. They wanted to maintain their level of standard so they didn’t mind paying for it. After purchasing all they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, and looked very unhealthy, and his clothes were torn, and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to meet his daily needs.

They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods to their home. The old porter quoted just $20, well below the market price. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make even one time’s meal so he needed anything he could earn.

The couple was very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, and two hours passed, but the porter still didn’t deliver their stuff.

The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such person, but you never listen to me. I am sure instead of delivering the goods to our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him.”

They both left towards the market. On their way near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their goods in his cart! The angry wife asked him, “Where is that old thief? This is our goods and he was supposed to deliver them. It seems you poor thieves are stealing our goods and going to sell them.”

    Paragraph 1:

When the porter heard the angry wife asking.
