  • 26、Elizabeth’s Second!

In 60 years, the Queen has never put a foot wrong in public. And for the last 24 of them, it turns out she’s had a secret weapon — the nice Ella Slack. The former BBC manager has, unknown to anyone except a handful of key advisers, spent the last quarter of a century acting as the Queen’s official stand-in at rehearsals (排练) for royal events. The 69-year-old has never accepted a penny for her royal service, considering it “a pleasure and an honour” to ensure that everything runs smoothly for the Queen. “How many people in the world have had a chance to sit in a royal landau (马车) or walk onto the dais (讲台) at Windsor Castle even before the Queen has done so?” she said.

While Miss Slack may not resemble the Queen facially, she has a similar figure to the Queen, standing just 5 foot. The Queen is 5 foot 2 inch. She began her remarkable role in 1988, when she was working as manager of the BBC’s sports and events department. A producer asked her if she could stand in for the Queen to check camera angles at a rehearsal — and her second career was born.

Since then, from the State Opening of Parliament (议会) to the 50th anniversary of Victory day, wherever the Queen is on duty Miss Slack is likely to have been there first. She has perfected her own version of the Queen’s clothes, including a black patent handbag she bought in a charity shop for 1, and even styles her hair like the Queen.

    1What’s the Queen’s secret weapon?

    A. She often meets people in public.

    B. She actively attends social activities.

    C. She has a nice lady to act as herself.

    D. She and Miss Slack have a lot in common.

    2Miss Slack’s words in Paragraph 1 indicate that ___________.

    A. she thinks the job honorable and worthy

    B. she thinks she can do the job better

    C. she thinks frequently of her role

    D. she is determined to carry the job on

3How did Miss Slack get the job?

    A. The Queen invited her to do so.

    B. The BBC appointed her to finish the job.

    C. She was invited to have an accidental try.

    D. The advisers offered her the chance.

4In which section of a newspaper may you find the passage?

  • 27、   Growing up,we are constantly reminded that young people are heavily affected by technology. We are the”antisocial club”those who prefer to text our friends in the same room rather than make eye contact with them. And even though never-ending studies reveal to us the extent of our social media addiction,we should at least consider that it’s not only our young people’s problem any more.

There’s the rise of the Instagram mums, who like to post an abundance of cute baby pictures, share their mom feelings along the way and show their wonderful lifestyles. They are the so-called”Facebook mum generation”a growing group of parents that like to overshare.

While all of this might be fine, and even a little humorous, new research suggests that parents’ technology addiction is negatively affecting their children’s behavior.According to the study,40%of mothers and 32%of fathers have admitted having some sort of phone addiction. This has led to a significant fall in verbal interactions within families and even a decline in mothers’ encouraging their children.

There is no denying that I get annoyed when receiving the words”I’ll be with you soon” from a parent, when all I want to do is ask one question. But,at the same time, every day leaving the room to wait until my father is finished with his”serious business”(Farmville),has now become the norm.Whether you want to escape your disturbing children for a bit,or want to stay up late flicking through Twitter, know that wanting to do all of these is normal.We-your children-know how addictive it can be and how difficult it is to switch off.But before telling us to put our phones away at the table or even worse, listing statistics of how damaging social media can be for us,maybe lead by example, considering how much time you spend on the phone and how this is impacting your children and your relationship with us.Maybe in this way we can work on our addiction together.

1From Paragraph 1,we can know that teenagers nowadays_.

    A.enjoy socializing with their friends

B.send messages to their friends every day

C.hate to make eye contact with their friends

D.are heavily addicted to their mobile phones

2What does the author think of mums’ oversharing?

    A.Boring. B.Funny. C.Selfish. D.Meaningful.

    3The underlined word”norm”in Paragraph 4 probably means

    A.discipline B.standard C.routine D.custom

4What’s the main purpose of the article?

A.To share the author’s own experience with the readers.

B.To call on parents to get rid of their own media addiction.

C.To reveal that parents are always addicted to mobile phones.

D.To show the author’s dissatisfaction with parents’ phone use.

  • 28、The Sahara Desert, which covers over 3.6 million square miles of Northern Africa, is one of the most unsuitable places for most animals to live in on the planet today. However, new research conducted by a team of international biologists has found that millions of years ago, the area was filled with frightening animals feeding on meat, including dinosaurs,

“It was the most dangerous place in the history of planet Earth because it was home to so many different kinds of dangerous animals in all shapes and sizes," says study leader Nizar Ibrahim, a biologist at the University of Detroit Mercy.

The researchers found the fossils (化石) of three of the world's largest-known dinosaur species that raised the Kem Kem beds to the status of “the most dangerous place in Earth's history”.

They included the "shark-toothed dinosaurs”. Larger than even the T-Rex, the massive theropods (兽脚亚目恐龙) measured 13 feet tall, 45 feet long, and weighed as much as 17,637 pounds. The creatures sported enormous jaws and teeth up to eight inches long. The mid-sized theropod, which grew to about 26 feet in length, had unusually slim hind limbs (后肢) for its size, suggesting it may have been a swift runner.

The most interesting thing was the Spinosaurus aegyptiacus (埃及棘龙). The massive 50-foot long, 15,434-pound animal had a long nose, similar to those of a crocodile's stomach, and long teeth. The dinosaur's most unusual feature, however, was its tail. Unlike the tails of other dinosaurs, such as the T-Rex, it was flexible with a large surface area.

To test the tail’s abilities, the biologists created a plastic one and attached it to a robotic swimming device. They found that the paddle-like structure was capable of moving sideways, suggesting that the dinosaurs could easily push through water. The researchers believe the dinosaurs were equally comfortable on land, where they came to lay their eggs.

【1】What was the Sahara Desert like millions of years ago?

A.Animals there mainly lived in water.

    B.There lived many dangerous animals.

C.Dinosaurs were the only animals there.

D.Dinosaurs there fed on three animals.

【2】How does the author mainly prove that shark-toothed dinosaurs are huge?

    A.By making comparisons.

    B.By using experts' words,

    C.By listing some figures.

    D.By showing plastic ones.

【3】What is most special about the Spinosaurus aegyptiacus?

    A.Its huge stomach.

    B.Its long nose.

    C.Its sharp teeth.

    D.Its flexible tail.

【4】What is the best title of this text?

A.The Sahara Desert Was Once Home to Dinosaurs

B.Dinosaurs Lived on the Earth for Millions of Years

C.Dinosaurs Were Once Dangerous to Many Animals

D.Researchers Have Found Fossils of Many Dinosaurs

  • 29、At just 40 years old,hip-hop star Kasseem Dean, more popularly known as Swizz Beatz, has amassed(积累)a track record, lifestyle and nearly$70 million net worth that would inspire most of us to retire early. So why does Dean continue to both work extremely hard and try projects that come with the risk of rejection?

During our interview for Uncommon Drive,a video series for USA&Main that seeks to find out the motivations and magic of world-class business people,Dean provided a memorable answer:“You only have so much time—once it’s gone you don’t get it back.Don’t focus on money;focus on building something greater than yourself. If you’re not making history, you’re wasting your time on Earth.”

When you look at his answer, you will learn two important lessons. The first is in“making history”.Doing so requires awareness. You must fully understand what has and has not been achieved in the market you’ve entered.Dean makes every effort with the goal of creating something important that has not been done before and will be remembered for its impact beyond his years.

The second part of his statement is just as powerful. In this interview,he never once said he is“trying”to make history.Instead,he has told himself that no matter what difficulty there is,it’s just going to happen.“I’m going to make history.”Dean said.

After talking to Dean for nearly 45 minutes,it was clear to me that he has removed all ego(自我)from a statement that might otherwise be misread as false pride.I believe it’s a brilliant hack—rather than focus on all the reasons why a project can’t be realized,he has convinced himself of the possibility.

【1】What is the function of the first paragraph?

A.To lead to the main topic.

    B.To describe a star’s success.

C.To express admiration for a star.

D.To explain the meaning of success.

【2】What motivates Dean to continue to work hard?

    A.His desire to be famous.

    B.His wish to be wealthy.

    C.His adventurous spirit and imagination.

D.His life goal to leave his mark on history.

【3】What can we learn about Dean in the interview?

A.He takes a pride in his work.

    B.He can predict the possibility.

    C.He always believes in himself.

D.He gets prepared for his career.

【4】What’s the title of the text?

A.How does Kasseem Dean face rejection?

B.What makes Kasseem Dean work hard?

C.How does Kasseem Dean make history?

D.Why doesn’t Kasseem Dean want to retire?

In many ways my disability has helped me grow stronger psychologically and become more7 (independence). I have to work hard to live a normal life but it has been worth it. If8(have) a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don't feel sorry for the disabled or make fun9them, and don't ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live10rich and full a life as you do.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

Smell the flowers before you go to sleep and you may just end up with rosy dreams. Have a whiff of rotten(腐烂的)eggs during the night and your dreams may be1(pleasant). So says researcher Dr. Boris Stuck, 2invited sleeping volunteers to a rose vs. rotten egg test in the University Hospital Mannheim in Germany. The subjects didn’t dream about roses3eggs, but rather he found that what they smelt affected the emotions of4(they) dreams.

And if you think5(smell) have a say in dreams, wait for what TV tells us. A UK study reveals that people exposed6black-and-white film and TV in their youth are to have monochromic(单色的)dreams throughout their life more7(probable). Eva Murzyn from the University of Dundee tested two age groups— one half 8(age) over 55 and9other half under 25.

The result? Under 5% of the dreams of the under-25s were in black and white. 10(watch)color TV in childhood seems to be the reason why.

Change is an unavoidable part of everyday life. It happens as time passes or as a consequence of one's decision. Changes may be positive or negative depending on how we understand them. Whereas some people are happy to live a life of routine, others accept change and prefer a challenging world where events are unpredictable

From one point of view, people who accept changes think that changes make their life meaningful. Firstly, changes create new opportunities, which make us leap forward. A new job, for instance, might present challenges that push the person to adapt, acquire new knowledge, or add to their skill set. Secondly, a change can represent a break with the past and an old routine which has become boring and predictable. Finally, as well as making life more fun and interesting, new experiences can be good for our physical and mental health. We find that changes can make us experienced and valuable

On the other hand, people who don't want to step outside their comfort zone prefer following their daily habits. They feel satisfied with their circumstances. Perhaps they feel that a routine gives them structure, maybe they are not fond of surprises or confident enough to face new challenges. They believe that staying secure and maintaining the present circumstances is the best way to live life safer. Such people have set times for performing certain functions and do things in the same way all the time. They fear the uncertainty of the unknown and may associate change with negative outcomes. For example, transition in position or status gives people worries as to whether they can   manage a new task

Both sides seem to have their own advantages. However, I personally think change is necessary if someone wants to keep up with the fast pace of modem life. Even if some people maintain a form of stability by following a routine, the world keeps spinning and evolving. Without change there would be no life at all. Our lives are actually fueled by change and seeing change as natural and unavoidable will bring us considerable stress relief.
