二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Several years ago,our family rented a house that had a basement apartment under ours. The young couple who lived below us were quiet and modest.Their dog, however, was not.

Cody was an outgoing black dog with a big tail.He loved to greet us by planting his huge paws on our chest. Our dog Tasha has a similar characteristic.Because she shared the yard with Cody, they soon became good friends.

We often saw a ball of black and white fur as they raced neck and neck toward some unlucky bird that had just landed in the yard. The only time I saw any conflict between the two dogs was when we fed Tasha Cody would jump up.expecting to share Tasha's food. However,Tasha would bark fiercely.Cody would change his strategy, dropping to his belly and moving slowly toward Tasha's dish. But this friendly behavior did not impress Tasha . The closer Cody got,the louder Tasha shouted.Finally.Cody would slip away with his tail between his legs-until next mealtime. Then Cody, ever the optimist, would replay the scene.with the same disappointing conclusion

One day my husband Jeff came home quite upset .He had just found Cody lying by the side of the road.killed by a speeding truck.Tasha cleaned Cody' s smooth black fur with her nose and mouth and whined(R).Over the next few weeks.Tasha was in low spirits with her tail between her legs. She obviously missed her old friend.

At the same time,Tasha's dish disappeared. We replaced it with another, only to have that one disappear as well. There followed a steady succession(连续)of bowls, plates, even an old coffee can. They all disappeared Finally, the mystery was solved when our neighbor knocked on our door, her arms loaded with the missing dishes, some still half-full of dog food.

Are these yours?"she asked. When Jeff and I nodded, she explained,"l saw Tasha headed  toward the road,so I followed her. Then I noticed all these dishes in a pile."

    Puzzled,I asked,"Where were they?"

“Well, you know,"she answered thoughtfully,Fit was right by the place where Cody died. Isn't that strange?Surely Tasha couldn't..."Her voice turned down in confusion.

Jeff and I exchanged glances.Has Tasha been begging her old friend back by offering him the one thing she refused to give him when he was alive?Even today, retelling the story makes me feel sad.It raises questions about animal’s intelligence and emotions. It also reminds me that I need to share whatever blessings I've received with others---before it's too late.

1We can learn from the passage that Tasha

    A.was an outgoing white dog

    B.lived in a basement apartment

C.was pot friendly to the young couple

D.was the enemy of Cody due to the yard

2A dog often feels disappointed or sad when

    A.dropping to the belly

    B.barking fiercely

    C.putting the tail between legs

    D.cleaning fur with its mouth

3In the author's opinion, why did Tasha move its food away?

A.Because it wanted to hide it for herself.

B.Because it wanted to hide it for Cody.

C.Because it wanted to show Cody what it had.

D.Because it wanted Cody to come back to life.

  • 22、Carlos Slim’s proposal that we work a three - day week sounds crazy. But many, in 1922, thought Henry Ford crazy when he announced that his staff would work a five - day week.

Our working week seems normal to us because it is what we all always do. He certainly could be for those he was most concerned about when he made his three - day - week statement at a business conference in Paraguay: the workers who are not ready to retire. As Mr. Slim said, it no longer makes sense for people to stop working in their fifties or sixties when they may still have up to a third of their lives ahead of them. “People are going to have to work for more years, until they are 70 or 75, and just work three days a week - perhaps 11 hours a day.” he said.

Keeping older employees at work makes sense for societies, especially those with a diminishing number of young people who are expected to support long - living retirees.

He appeared to be suggesting that these short - week workers earn the same as they did full - time. That is what happens at Telmex, his Mexican fixed - line phone company, where those qualified for retirement can choose to work four - day weeks on full pay.

Older workers elsewhere might prefer shorter weeks on reduced pay - and eight or nine - hour days rather than 11. Their companies might value keeping their experience while saving money on their salaries. What about everyone else? There are those who are unemployed, or in unstable jobs, who would be delighted to have three secure, well - paid days of work a week.

Shorter weeks don’t work in every job, but they work in more jobs than most tradition - bound managers think. Agreeing to them requires two shifts in management thinking. The first is the realization that much of the time spent in offices is wasted anyway. Second, senior executives need ro understand that the best way to measure people is by the work they produce - not by how much time they spend at their desks.

People living longer, in better health, are changing working life too. Mr. Slim’s idea is in tune with the times.

【1】According to paragraph 2 why did Mr. Slim think it unwise for people in their fifties or sixties to retire ?

A.Because they have longer life to live in their future.

B.Because they have children and old parents to support

C.Because they have much interest in their present work.

D.Because they have more experience than young workers.

【2】What can we infer from the passage ?

A.The decision of working five days a week by Ford was considered normal in the past.

B.Old people continuing working can reduce young people’s pressure to support their old parents

C.Some companies don’t want their old workers to go on working because they can save money.

D.Much time spent at work is wasted if managers don’t agree to reduce old employees’working time.

【3】What does the underlined phrase “in tune with” mean in the last paragraph ?

    A.Different from.

    B.Superior to.

    C.Far from.

    D.Consistent with.

【4】What is the best title for this passage ?

A.Retire Or Not, This Is A Question!

B.Shorter Weeks Is Welcome By All

C.Working Three Days A Week: A Great Idea

D.Carlos Slim - Crazy For More Resting Time

  • 23、In a unique research cooperation between Stratasys, Education, R&D departments and MIT’s Self-Assembly Lab, a new process is being developed, known as 4D Printing.

The 4D printing concept, which allows materials to “self-assemble (自行组装)” into 3D structures, was initially proposed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology faculty member Skylar Tibbits. Tibbits and his team combined a strand () of plastic with a layer made out of “smart” material that could self-assemble in water. They advanced this concept by creating materials that can change into several different complicated shapes, though this kind of material remains the bottleneck of 4D technology.

To many people that are just starting to get used to the idea of 3D printers, the name 4D is causing confusion because they cannot understand where this fourth “dimension” coming from. 4D technology shares many of the same principles of 3D printing and is essentially still about creating a new, 3D structure out of certain component; however, Tibbits states the fourth dimension at work here comes from concept of the fourth dimension of time. The difference between these 3D and 4D creations is that these new forms have the ability to transform and adapt over time.

4D printing works through self-assembly — a system where “disordered elements form an “ordered” structure via an interaction. With these 4D printed materials, these disordered materials are strands or sheets of specially designed materials. Environmental changes then stimulate (刺激)a response from them so that they form a preprogrammed shape.

The idea of having adaptable technology that only relies on energy and non-human interactions raises some interesting questions about where 4D printing can be used and the practical applications in dangerous environments. This could mean improved infrastructures in extreme conditions, leading to a reduced need for workers to put themselves at risk, but the potential goes even further than that. The technology promises exciting new possibilities for a variety of applications. A solar panel or similar product could be produced in a flat shape onto which functional devices can be easily installed. It could then be changed to a compact shape for packing and shipping. After arriving at its destination, the product could be stimulated to form a different shape that serves its function. Also it could be used to build furniture, bikes, cars and even buildings. As with many of the ideas being put forward, it is easy to go a step too far into the extreme, but this just shows the potential of 4D in comparison to 3D.

The next stage for the research is to move from printing single strands to sheets and eventually whole structures. And water need not be the process ’ s only energy source.

【1】Which of the following displays the fourth dimension of 4D printing?

    A. 4D printing creates a new, 3D structure out of certain component.

    B. 4D technology reduces need for workers to put themselves at risk.

    C. 4D technology can be used in many more fields than 3D printing.

    D. 4D printed materials reshape themselves with conditions changing.

【2】The major problem concerning the development of 4D printing lies in ________.

    A. producing essential 4D printers

    B. creating proper smart materials

    C. providing a suitable environment

    D. promoting practical applications

【3】What does the passage lead you to believe?

    A. 4D printing will take the place of 3D printing in the near future.

    B. Most aspects of our daily life can be affected by 4D printing.

    C. 4D printing will benefit humans by saving labor somehow.

    D. Smart materials can be transformed into other types of material.
