二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California is one of the world's most beautiful bridges. It is also one of the most visited places in the world. Vehicles(车辆) cross the bridge an average of 41 million times each year. More than 1,800 hundred million vehicles have used the bridge since it opened more than 70 years ago.

The bridge was painted “International Orange” because that color went well with the natural surroundings. The color also is easier to see in the heavy fog that often covers the area. But the Golden Gate Bridge was not named for its orange color. It was named for the body of water that it crosses, the Golden Gate Strait.

The Golden Gate Strait is the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The Golden Gate Bridge links the city of San Francisco with Marin County,California.

Planning for the bridge began in the 1920s when the area around San Francisco was growing. People living in the area needed another way to get to the city besides small ferries(渡船).

Joseph Strauss was the chief engineer for the project. Work began in 1934. Mr.Strauss demanded the strongest safety protections in the history of bridge building. These included the first use of “hard hats” to protect the workers' heads and special glasses to protect their eyes.

A special safety net was suspended(挂) under the bridge. This net saved the lives of 19 men during the construction. However, 11 other workers were killed when they fell from the bridge through the net. Still, this was a new safety record for the time.

The Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937. It extends 1,280 meters across the water. The total length is 2,737 meters. It was the largest suspension bridge(吊桥) in the world until 1964. That is when the Verrazano Narrows Bridge opened in New York City. Today, the Golden Gate Bridge is the ninth longest suspension bridge in the world.

【1】The Golden Gate Bridge was named after ________.

A.the local climate    B.the color of a paint

C.the strait it crosses   D.its natural surroundings

【2】How did people cross the Golden Gate Strait before the bridge was built?

    A.By plane.  B.By boat.  C.By road.  D.By train.

【3】The purpose of suspending a special safety net is to ________.

    A.protect the environment

    B.make construction easier

    C.prevent workers from falling

    D.save building materials from falling

【4】What do we know about Joseph Strauss?

A.He attached importance to the workers' safety.

B.His safety measures were not of practical value.

C.He built the first suspension bridge in the world.

D.He demanded strong measures to ensure the safety of the bridge.

  • 22、In November 2020, US climber Emily Harrington, 34, took on EI Captain—a 3,000 foot (917 meters) rock formation (岩层) in Yosemite National Park, US. She accomplished her feat (壮举) within a day and became the first woman to free-climb the Golden Gate route.

It used to take weeks for rock climbers to reach the top of EI Captain, even with the help of a partner and climbing aids. In recent years, only three people—all me—had free-climbed the Golden Gate route on EI Captain in under 24 hours, according to CNN.

The number of female climbers has been rising in recent years. Even in the pandemic, many of them have made great achievements and pushed human limits. “I had never expected to earn my place to a Yosemite climber. But throughout this experience I have learned that there is no formula to achievement up there,” she said.

The rising number of female climbing enthusiasts should come as no surprise. According to the website Climbing.com, “Climbing is one of the few sports where it’s possible to level the playing field. Women’s superior strength-to-weight ratio (比例)helps offset (弥补) anything we may lack in power or reach, bridging the gap between the sexes.”

Legendary Austrian climber Angela Eiter is another strong female figure in the climbing world. In 2020 Eiter made news as she climbed the unknown face she calls Madame Ching in her home country.

According to New York Post, the route was free of traces. That means Eiter had to search for the holds and predict how the moves were going to play out by herself. Worse still, the rock there is really fragile and some holds had to be fixed with glue. But after intensive indoor training to visualize the route and build up the strength, Eiter, who stands 154cm high and weighs 46kg, made it.

“I am not the strongest woman and I am very small, and I am happy that I can show other women that they can also do it,” she told the reporter.

    【1】What did Emily Harrington accomplish?

A.She reached the top of EI Captain in less than a day.

B.She free-climbed the Golden Gate route within weeks.

C.She was the first person to take on EI Captain successfully.

D.She free-climbed the Golden Gate route without climbing aids.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “level the playing field” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A.Give a sense of belonging.

    B.Give someone an advantage.

    C.Make a situation more balanced.

    D.Allow someone to prove themselves.

【3】What difficulty did Angela Eiter meet with when climbing Madame Ching?

A.There were no holds to use.

B.There were no beaten path to follow.

C.There was a lack of necessities like glue.

D.Her prediction about the route was wrong.

【4】What can we learn from Harrington and Eiter?

    A.Always battle others.

    B.Find where you belong.

C.Work hard to be a role model.

D.Be brave and pursue your goal.

  • 23、Have you ever heard someone say, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”, or give you advice about why it’s vital to start the day with a healthy breakfast? It seems that this meal, for many of us, is necessary for our day to start well, but is it really that important?

The word “breakfast” comes from “breaking the fast”— the idea of ending the period in which we don’t eat during the night. The regeneration process that takes place while we sleep consumes some of our natural food reserves. Breakfast gives us an opportunity to replenish those reduced stores of things like protein and calcium. So, in that way, a healthy breakfast makes sense.

There are also many often-quoted studies which seem to connect a state of being overweight with not eating breakfast. In fact, it leads many health experts to advise a healthy breakfast to not only control but also lose weight. In a US study, 50,000 people were monitored over seven years, and those who ate a healthy breakfast were found to have a lower BMI (体重指数), which seems to suggest that breakfast may indeed help people maintain a healthy weight.

But it might not be as simple as that. Alexandra Johnstone, professor of appetite research at the University of Aberdeen, suggests those who do not have breakfast might be less aware of healthy diets and nutrition, and people who eat breakfast might have a healthier lifestyle overall exercising and not smoking, for example. And he also points out that with the rise in popularity of intermittent (间歇性的) fasting to lose weight, there may also be some benefits to not eating breakfast, like improving blood sugar control and lowering blood pressure.

So, while breakfast has its benefits, it might not be the most important meal. It seems that a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet might be more important for many of us than just one single meal.

【1】Why does the author list the questions in the first paragraph?

    A.Set aside.

    B.Manage without.

    C.Make up for.

【3】What conclusion can we draw from Johnstone’s research?

A.Skipping breakfast may do good to our health.

B.Those who eat breakfast can keep a lower BMI.

C.Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

D.Intermittent fasting contributes greatly to weight loss.

【4】What does the author suggest we do at the end of the text?

    A.Try new lifestyles.

    B.Follow a balanced diet.

    C.Pay more attention to breakfast.

D.Be aware of the benefits of each meal.

  • 24、Using the power of the ocean’s tidal streams can provide a reliable means of helping to meet the country’s future energy demand, according to a new research in the UK. However, it will require government funding to accelerate innovation and drive down its cost so that future projects can provide cheap electricity.

And such opportunities are not presently available given the government’s funding schemes. So far, access to government funding has helped install 18 MW of tidal stream capacity. This relatively modest funding support to date has put the tidal stream sector on a steep cost reduction trajectory. However, cost reduction has slowed since access to funding has been removed. Continuing such support is essential to enable it to become cost-competitive with biomass and nuclear.

The study also explored the potential environmental effects of such future developments and found no evidence to suggest that the next phase of tidal stream development will cause significant harmful environmental impact. The study was released just a day before the COP26 conference.

Dr. Danny Coles, the study’s lead author, said: “Our study shows there is considerable evidence that the UK’s tidal stream energy resource can provide 11%of our current annual electricity demand. Achieving this would require around 11.5 GW of tidal stream turbine capacity to be installed, and we currently stand at just 18 MW. It took the UK offshore wind industry approximately 20 years to reach 11.5 GW of installed capacity. If tidal stream power is going to contribute to the net-zero transition, time is of the essence.”

The UK Government has already committed to a Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2050.However, electricity demand is expected to more than double by 2050 and while wind and solar will be the main contributors to meet this demand, a diverse generation technology mix is needed to keep the lights on. Tidal stream power is technically practicable and an important element of future net zero energy generation.

【1】What is the primary concern in developing tidal stream power?

    A.Safety in producing.

    B.Offshore wind capacity.

    C.Challenges in engineering.

    D.Government’s financial support.

【2】What can we learn about the UK’s tidal stream power from Dr. Coles?

A.The UK has set up enough turbines.

B.It plays a major role in reaching zero release.

C.More efforts are needed to realize its full potential.

D.It provides 11%of the UK’s present electricity demand.

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards developing tidal stream power?

    A.Conservative.

    B.Positive.

    C.Objective.

    D.Skeptical.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.UK benefits from tidal energy

B.UK fails to meet its electricity demand

C.UK’s tidal energy can aid drive for net-zero

D.UK’s tidal energy dominates sources of electricity
