二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、My mom takes pride in the fact that I was talking in three and four word sentences before I was ten months old. Some say it’s a gift while others simply think I talk too much.

As my thirties came to a close, I found myself reflecting on my life. I’m very happy and have no significant regrets. However, when I looked back on those times of difficulty, I saw a clear common denominator(特征); I didn’t seem to know when to stop talking. Whether it was hurting someone’s feelings, or having carelessly told a secret, the incident could have been avoided had I closed my mouth sooner. So I decided to practice the power of quiet.

To take this step, I needed to understand how people could sit comfortably in a group and not talk. Why does my husband feel completely content to say nothing in a conversation? He’s highly intelligent and has wonderful opinions but he’ll sit quietly and just listen. Even when he’s asked a pointed question, he’ll answer with few words while still communicating effectively. What a talent!

Can you imagine being happy just listening? In surveying those I know who talk less than I do, I got two answers—they either didn’t feel confident enough to speak up, or they just didn’t feel the need to participate in the conversation. Of course there were other reasons for not talking, but these were the two most popular answers.

The first one didn’t work for me. I’m just fine letting people know what I think about them, and hopefully it will make the conversation much more interesting. The second one didn’t work either. I do feel the need to participate. I feel it physically like an electrical pulse through my body; sometimes it’s so strong that it causes me to behave badly in the form of interrupting or speaking in an unusually loud voice. I had to look further.

An interesting thing happened on this journey to the power of quiet. During my weekly yoga class, it came to me like an answer so clear that the words rang in my head like soft, heavenly bells.

I talked too much so people would know I cared about them. It was my way of taking care of those I love. I decided before my fortieth birthday, that from that day forward, those around me would know I loved them, and cared what they thought and felt, but I was going to practice the power of quiet.

As my forty-second birthday approaches, I can say that deciding to talk less has been more about focusing on quality rather than quantity. I’ve found that listening more shows those who I care about that I really do care how they feel. Now when I break in, it means more to them. Oh, sure, I still have my short periods of talking too much, but for the most part this has been one resolution that I can call a success.

【1】In Paragraph 3 the writer mentions her husband mainly ________.

    A. to show how one communicates effectively

    B. to explain the reason for his silence in a conversation

    C. to give her high opinion of his communication skills

    D. to give an example of those who have the power of quiet

【2】By “I had to look further”, the writer means she had to ________.

    A. look into the future in order to succeed in practicing the power of quiet

    B. try harder to prevent herself from talking too much

    C. find out other reasons why she should talk less

    D. survey people in other areas who talk little

【3】Which of the following best describe the writer’s character?

    A. Kind but pessimistic.

    B. Selfless but proud.

    C. Loving and active.

    D. Stubborn and sensitive.

  • 22、   It is food news guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Scientists have found that eating dark chocolate appears to lower the risk of depression by a quarter. While 7.6 percent of the 13,000 people surveyed reported depressive symptoms, just 1.5 percent of the chocolate eaters did.

The study by University College London (UCL), the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services Canada, also found that the people who consumed the most of any chocolate were also 57 percent less likely to report depressive symptoms. Lead author Dr. Sarah Jackson said, “This study provides some evidence that consumption of chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, may be associated with reduced odds of clinically relevant depressive symptoms.”

The study is the first to examine the association with depression according to the type of chocolate consumed. The team assessed data from 13,626 adults from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A range of other factors including height, weight, marital status, ethnicity, education, household income, physical activity, smoking and chronic health problems were also taken into account to ensure the study only measured chocolate’s effect on depressive symptoms.

After adjusting for these factors, it was found that individuals who reported eating any dark chocolate in two 24-hour periods had 70 percent lower odds of reporting clinically relevant depressive symptoms in the previous two weeks than those who reported not eating chocolate at all.

Chocolate contains a number of psychoactive ingredients which produce a feeling of euphoria similar to that of cannabinoid (大麻素), found in cannabis. It also contains phenyl ethylamine (苯乙胺), a neuromodulator (神经调节物质) which is believed to be important for regulating people’s moods. Dark chocolate also has higher concentration of flavonoids (类黄酮), antioxidant chemicals which lower inflammation and can prevent the onset (发生) of depression.

However, British scientists pointed out that the decision to eat dark chocolate could be linked to other health factors. For example, people who choose dark chocolate may be more health conscious in general, which is known to protect against depression. Depressed people are also more likely to desire for more sugary fatty foods and so could be less likely to pick a dark alterative when choosing chocolate.

1Which of the following statements is TRUE of the study?

A.minority of chocolate eaters suffer from depression. B.majority of people surveyed are depressive.

C.All kinds of chocolate can help fight depression. D.Half of people with depression are surveyed.

2The study is typical in that ________.

A.it pointed out the relationship between depression and chocolate

B.it demonstrated the protective effects of black chocolate

C.the findings were based on the type of chocolate consumed

D.the researchers conducted the survey worldwide

3What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?

A.The advantages of chocolate. B.The reasons for the protective effects.

C.The causes of depression. D.The effects of chocolate.

4What’s the British scientists’ attitude toward the findings?

    A.Cautious. B.Supportive. C.Unimportant. D.Curious.

  • 24、Hundreds of millions have rolled up their sleeves for the COVID-19 vaccine, but why haven't they rolled up their pants legs instead? Why do we get most shots in our arms? What's the science behind why we get most vaccines in our arm and does location matter?

Muscles make an excellent vaccine (疫苗) administration site because muscle tissue contains important immune (免疫) cells. These immune cells recognize the antigen (抗原), a tiny piece of a virus or bacteria introduced by the vaccine that stimulates an immune response.

In the case of the COVID-19 vaccine, the immune cells in the muscle tissue pick up these antigens and present them to the lymph nodes (淋巴结). Injecting (注射) the vaccine into muscle tissue keeps the vaccine localized, allowing immune cells to sound the alarm to other immune cells and get to work. Once a vaccine is recognized by the immune cells in the muscle, these cells carry the antigen to lymph vessels, which transport the antigen-carrying immune cells into the lymph nodes.

Lymph nodes, key components of our immune system, contain more immune cells that recognize the antigens in vaccines and start the immune process of creating antibodies.

Croups of lymph nodes are located in areas close to vaccine administration sites. For instance, many vaccines are injected in the deltoid (三角肌) because it is close to lymph nodes located just under the armpit (腋下).

Muscle tissue also tends to keep vaccine reactions localized at the injection site. If certain vaccines are injected into fat tissue, the chance of irritation and side effect increases because fat tissue has poor blood supply, leading to poor absorption of some vaccine components. Vaccines must be given in a muscle to avoid widespread side effect.

Yet another deciding factor in vaccine administration location is the size of the muscle as well as convenience.

【1】Why did the author raised many questions in the first paragraph?

A.People do have many questions about injecting the vaccine into arms.

B.The writer actually didn't know the answers of these questions.

C.The writer wanted to arouse readers' interest in reading the article.

D.The theory behind the vaccine injection is difficult to understand.

【2】What's the advantage of getting vaccine shots in the muscle?

A.Muscle tissue spread important immune cells easily.

B.Muscle tissue can stimulate an immune response.

C.The antigen can be recognized by muscle tissue easily.

D.Vaccine can stimulate a better immune response there.

【3】What may the underlined word in the sixth paragraph mean?

    A.Common feeling of sorrow.

    B.Abnormal sensitivity to stimulation.

    C.Terrible wound in the muscle.

    D.Absorption of vaccine components.

【4】What may the article continue to present?
