二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、One part of the oath (誓言) taken by physicians requires us to “remember that there is art to medicine, and that warmth, sympathy and understanding may outweigh the surgeon’s knife or the chemist’s drug.” When I, along with my medical school class, recited that oath at my white coat ceremony a year ago, I admit that I was more focused on the biomedical aspects than the “art”.

Actually, medical professionals can get too easily caught up in treating to remember there is still space for healing. As doctors learn to communicate with patients beyond the restricted language of physical indicators, drug protocols and surgical interventions that may go against healing, they are reaching for new tools — poetry.

One clinical trial studied the effect of music or poetry on the pain, depression, and hope scores of 65 adult patients under cancer treatment. They found that both types of art therapy (疗法) produced similar improvements in pain and depression scores. Only poetry, however, increased hope scores. Researchers assumed that poetry can break the so-called law of silence, according to which talking about one’s perception of illness is taboo. After listening to poetry, one participant said, “I feel calmer when I hear those words. They show me that I’m not alone.”

Insights like these are already making their way into the clinic. Sarah Friebert runs a care center where children are visited by a writer who helps them create poems and stories for publication. Eric Elshtain uses poetry on the wards to teach children the power of self-expression. He’s found that many of his patients write haikus about things like sports or their favorite stuffed animal, rather than their experience in a hospital bed. Poetry, as he said, is a way to both accept the hospital encounter and escape from it.

While a poem a day won’t cure, it might help relieve. I’ve decided that I’ll learn how to meet my patients beyond the chart documents; that Fil encourage them to write their own stories; that I will heal as well as treat. In other words, I’ll honor each and every word in the oath I took last year.

  • 22、Shanghai—Shanghai officials are welcoming a new national-water law that they say will help them protect the upper reaches of the Huangpu River and other water ways in Shanghai.

The new law, which came into effect yesterday, updates a law enacted(颁布) in 1988 that focused on supplying water to needy areas, but didn’t pay a great deal of attention to environmental protection.

The previous law, for example, gave local authorities power over waterways in these areas, but didn’t pay attention to the sources of those rivers and lakes. So, Shanghai was responsible for cleaning and protecting the lower reaches of the Chang Jiang River but had no say in how the river’s upper reaches, which feed into Shanghai, are maintained.

The new law will make it easier to control the amount of waste that ends up in local rivers and reduce inefficient use of waterways, said Zhang Jia-yi, director of the Shanghai Water Affairs Bureau, on the bureau’s website commenting on law yesterday.

Zhang said the new law focuses on the efficient use of water sources and emphasizes the harmonious development of China’s population, its economy and environment.

Zhang also emphasizes the city will crack down on companies and individuals that pollute the city’s water sources. The bureau sets up a special force to investigate(调查) water pollution in March.

So far this year, the bureau has published more than 3 million in fines on various polluters, Zhang said.

1The best title for the news report should be ______.

    A. A new Law Is Born

    B. A New Water Law to Protect Rivers

    C. Is it Necessary to Protect the Rivers

    D. Make Full Use of Water Sources

2The underlined phrase “crack down on” in Paragraph 6 means _____.

    A. bring up carefully   B. speak highly of

    C. deal with seriously   D. destroy completely

3Which of the following is NOT true?

    A. The law in 1988 is suitable for the new requirements.

    B. The new law will stop waste being poured into the Chang Jiang River.

    C. A lot of polluting units have been fined this year.

    D. The new law and the old one are kind of the same in protecting the environment.

4We can infer from the passage that _____ .

    A. the problem of protecting the water sources wasn’t paid much attention to

    B. no laws were carried out to manage the water sources in Shanghai.

    C. the new law mainly emphasizes how to make use of the water sources.

    D. companies or individuals that polluted the water sources didn’t get fined.

  • 23、When it came to design, Steve Jobs lived Apple’s “Think Different” mantra(信条). Many major corporations use design to benefit their bottom lines, but Apple’s entire ethos was design. And it was hardwired in Jobs. Even when he was heading NeXT, the educational-computer company he founded, product and graphic design drove his strategy. He went so far as to get special dispensation(授权)from IBM to commission the NeXT logo from Paul Rand, designer of the IBM, ABC, and Westinghouse logos. When Jobs returned to Apple, he took its design to new levels, profoundly influencing the look of 21st-century computer technology.

Apple products became designers’ best friends, forever altering the practice of everything from graphic design to architecture by placing production power in the hands of creators. Jobs realized that creative people were not simply his primary customers, they were the willing propagandists of the brand. He so keenly understood his end users, and treated them with respect, that they went forth and exponentially multiplied.

Jobs integrated a range of designers into all aspects of the company—from hardware to software, from product to package, from corporate identity to advertising. He found roles for graphic, industrial, interior, and user-experience designers. Jobs never slavishly(盲目地) reacted to the market’s fickle whims(率性)or wants; he accepted that his role was to educate people to the potential of personal technology and enhance their appreciation of design. He used design to alter behavior and consequently altered his users’ behavior through innovative design. Unlike many other tech companies, design was the engine in Jobs’s world. Designers were not injected as foreign organisms into the middle or end of the conceptual and engineering process, after the engineers and marketers did the meaningful work.

Jobs was an equal-opportunity design patron. He never distinguished, as many brand companies do, between high and low design for high-end and low-end markets. One brand fit all. Apple did not hide a discount sub-brand behind tasteless graphics—although fair discounts offered to educators and some professions were routinely available. Every customer got the same logo, package, and product.

Design was not used to mask shoddy goods or inflate prices. Jobs’s sense of quality was legend. He instilled his designers with extra pride.

Likewise it was expected that every Apple customer would experience pride of ownership. From the boxes in which adapters and earbuds were sold to the look of the apps that are now so ubiquitous, the end user expected the best, the clearest, the cleanest.

And what about those Apple stores? Part museum, part retail mall—with great shopping bags, too. Rarely has design been so valued by a corporate CEO, and rarely is design’s value so inextricably tied to the reputation of a corporation. Jobs was a holistic designer—everything, everywhere, was designed well. And that is the essence of thinking different.

【1】We can learn from Paragraph 1 that Steve Jobs ________.

A.was always catering for the favors of the public

B.aimed to cultivate customers’ potential of graphic design

C.was embodied in every aspect of his company

D.had largely affected users’ buying intentions

【4】Which of the following is true of Jobs’s equal-opportunity design?

A.Every Apple user can own the products of the same level.

B.Apple designed sub-brand products for some users.

C.Its aim is to lift the overall prices of Apple products.

D.Apple provides every customer with the best product.

  • 24、Tiny as they are, bats have the ability to "see" in the dark by using a special skill called echolocation(回声定位法). They make noises and wait for sound waves, or an echo, to bounce back off objects. They can tell the distance of various objects by how quickly, the sound waves bounce back off them. If no sound bounces back, they can then fly forward.

This special ability has been copied in the human world for a long time, such as in submarines and planes. But apart from helping vehicles “see” where they are, what if blind people could use echolocation for themselves? American Daniel Kish. who is blind, 1s known as "batman. " This isn't because he walks around in a cape(披风) and a mask, but because he has a bat-like ability to locate where he is through sharp clicks he makes by moving his tongue against the roof of his mouth. Kish is so skilled at echolocating that he can ride a bike and hike on his own.

Recently, a research carried out at the University of Durham in England shed some light on the power of human echolocation. Kish, as well as other volunteers, worked with a group of scientists who studied the way blind people listen to the echoes that they produce from clicks. The team found that people were capable of hearing even very faint echoes, ones far fainter than had been previously thought.

Lore Thaler, lead scientist of the group, said, "We found that in some conditions, they were really faint-about 95 percent softer than the actual clicks, but the echolocators were still able to sense this."

Andrew Kolarik, another expert in echolocation, told BBC News that echolocation “can be very useful at providing information at face or chest height” and could help people “avoid objects like low hanging branches that might not get detected by the cane or a guide dog".

According to BBC News, echolocation is a skill blind people can acquire and develop, just like learning a language. As Kolarik said, "Teaching echolocation skills could provide blind people with the means of exploring new places. "

【1】What does "this special ability" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.The ability to make noises in the dark.

B.The ability to bounce back off objects.

C.The ability to measure the distance quickly.

D.The ability to use sound waves to echolocate.

【2】What do we know about Daniel Kish from the text?

A.He is fond of riding a bike and hiking alone.

B.He is able to hear echoes he produces from clicks.

C.He is called "Batman” because he looks like a bat.

D.He conducted the experiment to circulate echolocation.

【3】What is Kolarik's attitude towards the future use of echolocation in blind people?

    A.Ambiguous.

    B.Hopeful.

    C.Tolerant.

    D.Doubtful.

【4】What's the best title for the text?

    A.Echolocation in Human World.

    B.A Very Special Batman.

    C.Finding New Way to “See”.

    D.A Breakthrough in echoing.
