二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. She said, “I love you, but I know this other woman loves you and would love to spend some time with you.” The other woman my wife referred to was my mother, having been a widow for 19 years, but being busy made it possible for me to visit her occasionally.

That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie. “What’s wrong? Are you well?” she asked. My mother is the type of woman who suspects a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news. “I think that it would be pleasant to spend some time with you,” I responded, “just the two of us.” She thought about it for a moment, saying, “I would like that very much.” As I drove over to pick her up that Friday after work, I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed she, too, seemed to be nervous. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary.

She smiled just like an angel. “I told my friends I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed. They can’t wait to hear about our meeting,” she said, getting into the car. We went to a nice restaurant. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, my mother said happily, “It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small. It’s time that you returned the favor.” I responded. During the dinner, we had a wonderful conversation, talking about recent events of each other’s life. We talked so much that we missed the movie. As we arrived at her house, she said, “Next time, let me invite you to go out.” I agreed.

“How was your dinner date?” asked my wife when I got home. “Very nice, much more than I could have imagined,” I answered.

A few days later, my mother died of a massive heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn’t have a chance to do anything for her. Some time later, I received an envelope with a receipt from the restaurant Mother and I had dined, reading, “I paid this bill in advance. I am not sure I can be there. I paid for two plates. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you, son.”

At that moment, I understood the importance of “I LOVE YOU”. Give it to our loved ones the time that they deserve, because it cannot be put off till “some other time”.

  • 22、People saved a 20-foot orca (虎鲸) that was stuck between rocks on an Alaskan shore by continuously pouring water over it and protecting it from birds who circled above the defenseless whale.

The whale was ultimately saved after a six-hour, labor-intensive life-saving operation. Someone spotted the large whale on the Prince of Wales Island near the coast of British Columbia on the morning of July 29th. The Coast Guard was called around 9 a.m. local time. Chance Strickland, the captain of a private yacht in Alaska, and his crew anchored and began life-saving action that were videoed by Aroon Melane and posted on the Internet.

Strickland could hear the orca calling out to killer whales swimming in the area. People on other boats stopped with water and buckets to pour water over the animal. “There were tears coming out of its eyes,” Mr. Strickland told the local newspaper. “It was pretty sad.”

The group of people formed a chain that passed buckets of seawater back and forth and poured the water on the orca, which seemed to liven it up. It made a noise and raised its tail when it got water.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was called in, which can be seen on the video using a machine to spray a mist of seawater on the orca, which doubled as a way to keep the whale cool and scare the large group of birds that were hoping to feast on the beast.

Melane said in her video that the orca was stranded (搁浅) for about six hours until the tide came in and swept it back into the ocean. The group efforts of Strickland’s crew and the NOAA saved the 13-year-old killer whale.

【1】Why did birds circle above the orca?

A.They were eager to eat it.

    B.They wished to protect it.

C.They were attracted by the people.

D.They wanted to find a place to rest.

【2】What did Strickland do immediately after finding the whale?

    A.Posted pictures online.

    B.Called friends for help.

    C.Took action to save it.

    D.Videoed the trapped animal.

【3】Why did the whale make a noise and raise its tail?

A.To express its eager for water.

B.To extend its thanks to people.

C.To call out to its fellow whales.

D.To show its power and sadness.

【4】Which can be the best title for the text?

    A.Killer Whale Got Saved

    B.The Orca Inspired Kindness

    C.Combined Efforts Wanted

    D.Animals and Humans United

  • 23、   I was having breakfast, when "OUCH!" I screamed. “Why do you pinch (捏)me?”

"You're not wearing green/' said my little brother; Tex. “Everyone knows you get pinched if you don’t wear green on Saint Patrick's Day!"

I was mostly mad about getting pinched, but also a tiny bit glad about being reminded that it was Saint Patrick's Day.

I panicked. "What am I going to do? I don't have time to change. I'll get pinched all day long!" "Well,", Tex said, taking the old green baseball hat off his head, "you could borrow my lucky hat.”

"But it's your favorite!" I said.

"I know,” said Tex. "Just promise to give it back after school."

"No problem," I said, glancing in the mirror on my way out the door. "I look like a fool in this thing !"

    "A lucky fool.” said Tex.

"Hum." I grabbed my backpack. "Thanks, I think?'

Now, before I go on, you should know that I'm not a superstitious (迷信的)person. I don't believe that thirteen is an unlucky number or that breaking a mirror brings seven years of bad luck.

Anyway, I was racing to catch the school bus, and I saw a dollar on the sidewalk! I looked around to see if anyone was looking for it, but people just kept stepping on the poor thing, so I decided to rescue it. I had found pennies before, but never a dollar!

My luck didn't stop there. Carlos and Jackson were sitting behind me, quizzing each other on spelling words.

I turned around and said, "You guys know that test isn't till tomorrow right?"

"It got switched to this morning," said Jacsksn. "Remember?"

"That's right. I totally forgot!" I said. "I'm so lucky that I sat in front of you. If I hadn't, I wouldn't have found out till it was too late!”  I got out my spelling words, studied all the way to school. And ended up getting a good mark in the test!

The minute I got home, I gave Tex a big hug.

“This is the luckiest hat in the world,” I said. "I'm never taking it off!

"But you promised to give it back!" said Tex.

"Please—oh—please let me borrow your lucky hat for one more day!" I begged.

"Tomorrow I'm auditioning (试演)for the school play, and I need every bit of help I can get.” "OK," said Tex. “One more day. But you'd better be really nice to me."

"I will," I agreed. "In fact, here you have my lucky dollar!” Tex cried with joy, then started dancing around and waving his gift in the air.

The next day turned out to be super lucky. My audition couldn't have gone better.

"Wow, Arizona!" said my friend Mareya. "I can't believe how amazingly you just did! You are so getting a major part in this play!"

"Thanks! But honestly. the only reason I did OK is because I had my lucky hat.”

    "What lucky hat?” asked Mareya.

“This one,” I said, reaching into my backpack, where I thought I'd put Tex's hat since I couldn't

wear it for the audition. But it wasn't there! " Oh no!" I cried. "It's gone! What am I going to tell Tex?”

Mareya helped me look for it. Luckily, we found Tex's hat in my locker. Also luckily. I discovered that I could be lucky with or without a goofy-looking hat.

"So it wasn't the hat," said Mareya. "This is just a wild guess, but maybe it was all those hours you spent practicing over the past month.”

    "Hmm,” I said. “It's possible.”

So, dear friend, I guess you could say that luck is a combination of being prepared, believing in yourself... and maybe just a tiny bit of magic! In other words, luck may come your way, but you have to be ready for it when it does!

1What can we infer from what the writer said "I look like a fool in this thing"?

A.On the school bus. B.A few minutes before the test.

5What does the underlined word "goofy-looking" most probably mean?

    A.Good-looking. B.Lucky-looking.

    C.Foolish-looking. D.Cool-looking.

6At the end of the story, the writer realized that " "

A.an ounce of luck is better than a pound of wisdom

B.bad luck always comes in threes

C.behind bad luck comes good luck

D.opportunities are only given to those who are well-prepared

  • 24、Mayor Bill de Blasio designated(指定) the Lunar New Year an official public school holiday in New York City in June, 2015.

The move came after de Blasio in March, 2015 declared school holidays on the most-observed holiday in Islam, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. De Blasio, making good on a promise made during his 2013 mayoral campaign, said students would also have a day off on the Lunar New Year, and not long ago the Asian holiday took place on February 8, 2016.

"About 15% of the city’s school system is of Asian descent(血统), and many student, have been taking the day off as a sick day” said State Senator Daniel Squadron. “It’s a big deal,” he said, whose district includes Manhattan’s Chinatown. “Families have had to choose between their most important cultural celebration and missing a day of school.”

The city’s Department of Education had been working on the practical arrangements for adding another holiday while maintaining the legal 180 school days. The problem was solved by combining two half days that previously did not count towards the total to form a single full day that can be counted towards the total. After San Francisco, New York is the second major urban school district to add the Lunar New Year to the official school calendar.

“This holiday is not about kids just getting a day off from school,” said Assemblyman Ron Kim. “It’s about the City of New York telling hundreds of Asian-American societies that America is a cultural melting pot.” Kim said recognizing the holiday is one way of pushing back against feelings of isolation and marginalization(边缘化) felt by the Asian-American community.

【1】What does the underlined party in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Make use of.  B. Stand by.  C. Keep up with.  D. Go against.

【2】How does New York make the Lunar New Year an official public school holiday?

    A. By cancelling a legal 1-day holiday.

    B. By copying the way of San Francisco.

    C. By adding a new full day to the school calendar.

    D. By changing the legal 180 school days.

【3】What do we know from Ron Kim’s words?

    A. He’s opposed to the new school holiday.

    B. Asian culture is valued most in New York.

    C. Asian culture is part of the American society.

    D. The holiday wipes out Asian Americans’ isolation.

【4】What’s the best title for this passage?

    A. A new public school holiday in New York

    B. A promise made by the mayor of New York

    C. Cultural differences between America and Asia

    D. A revolution of the Lunar New Year in New York
